  • By the River Medway in Yalding, with river access for watersports
  • A 25-minute drive to Leeds Castle; half an hour to Sissinghurst
  • Pub, railway station and canoe hire within a five-minute walk
If your kind of retreat is one where you’re free to wade in the river, paddle downstream and spend evenings in a waterside pub, Riverview Camping and Caravans might be what you’ve been searching for. This peaceful site is right next to the River Medway, in the Kent village of Yalding… Naturally, that makes it a particularly fine spot for those aiming to launch their watersports kit while on a rural break, as it’s in the middle of the River Medway Canoe Trail from Tonbridge to Allington. There’s direct access to the river from the site, with a couple of slipways and a canoe hire place within a few minutes’ walk as well. The riverside setting is also a good one for those looking to settle down somewhere peaceful and pretty – but that’s not all this location has going for it. It’s also handily less than five minutes’ walk from the railway station, a coffee shop with a play area, and a lovely riverside pub/restaurant. Stroll for a little further (all of about 10 minutes) to get to the village centre for more pubs, takeaways, a tearoom, a bakery and the village shop. It’s all mighty convenient for those travelling without a car. Back at the site, basic amenities are in place – guests will have access to toilets and a washing-up area, but there’s no hot water available. Those hoping to spend the evening stoking a fire are in luck, as both campfires and barbecues are permitted on site.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked I stayed in the camping pitches with caravan powered by battery, its was great, my daughter was constantly playing with other kids, the site is very well maintained, lacks any showers tho but it’s fairly obvious the site hasn’t being there for a long time but the owners are very nice and doing there best, In time im sure upgrades will be added.

but overall this site is one of my favorite iv being to, they encourage fire pits, that’s what campings really about, great atmosphere, there’s a park that I didn’t know was there, they lock the large gates so kids are safe to free Rome safely, there’s a shop just around the corner, there’s many beautiful old trees, river, bunker, park, fresh water, clean main toilets,

I’m definitely coming back with other parents and kids in the future, I liked this place a lot!

Good luck to the owners they are doing great and you can sense the enthusiasm 🙌🏻

Liked Stayed here due to its position on the river as we wanted to launch our Kayak. Lively large spacious site, easy going, and able to choose your own spot. Lots of trees and of course access to the river. No showers which we were fine with as we only stayed 2 nights. Toilet block was regularly cleaned. Will definitely return

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Really lovely campsite right on the edge of the River Medway. There were lots of people enjoying the river swimming, paddle boarding, canoeing and generally making the most of the beautiful weather. We stayed during a 30°C heatwave, but the site is surrounded by trees with a large clump of trees in the middle of the field where we set up, so we were able to stay nicely shaded. There was also a lovely shaded playground tucked amongst the trees, which was perfect for the kids.

The site itself was clean and well maintained, with freshly mowed grass. There were portaloos dotted around the campsite as well as a toilet block near the entrance, which we found clean throughout our stay. There are also water taps in a couple of places around the site. There are no showers or electric hook-ups, but we knew that when booking so it wasn’t an issue for us.

The only slight downside was that the bins were overflowing at one point during the busy bank holiday weekend, although they were emptied very early on the Monday morning. If you’re staying here, I’d probably avoid pitching too close to the entrance if you don’t want an early wake-up call on Monday morning!

We really enjoyed our weekend here. We walked to The Boathouse, which is only about a 5-minute walk away, and had a lovely lunch overlooking the weir. There’s also a canoe hire place opposite the restaurant, which looked really popular.

Disliked I do think the price is slightly on the expensive side considering there are no showers or electric hook-ups, but having said that, many campsites seem to be charging similar prices now. Overall, we absolutely loved the site and will definitely be booking again.

Liked Great relaxed site, stuff for the kids, location by the river amazing. Best value site we've been to for a while as camping seems to be getting more and more expensive.
You can dip in the river if you want

Disliked No dislikes as we read the listing - but for the people that don't read, there are no showers, no EHU and no hot water, you need to be a little self sufficient!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked It was our 3rd time here since 2024.
We really like the spot, the access to the river and there are nice walks to do around too. On this occasion (bank holiday weekend) it was much much busier than what we experienced before but it was well run and Don and Clare’s presence through the weekend made it welcoming and family friendly. We stayed on the field for the first time as we normally have riverside pitches and it was just as pleasant honestly. We’ll be back!

Disliked No major dislike but there’s some room for improvement: the access to the river is really not that easy as steep and very slippery, especially with kids or with a paddle board. Maybe the bank could be made a little more accessible.

The toilets are ok and checked often but, the water pressure being low most of the time, they don’t flush well at all which can make the trips to the loos less pleasant. Especially the smaller ones on the field where there’s no light at night.

As mentioned in other reviews, at this price, it would be good to have showers as they definitely lack on longer (and hot!) weekends. Especially after a swim in the river!

Liked Great setting next to the river with very clean facilities. The copse in the middle was great for the kids and welcome shade on a very hot weekend. There were loads of family groups there but we had no problems with noise during the night.

Local attractions

Pay a visit to the biggest collection of teapots in England. If such a thing wasn’t on your travel wishlist previously, it will be now – after all Teapot Island is only five minutes’ walk away. Also close by is The Hop Farm (five minutes’ drive), likely to be a hit with young kids due to its small farm animals and soft play. Adults will be happy to find things catering to their taste too. Fishing activities are available at Claygate Lakes (10 minutes) and at Mereworth Wines (10 minutes), taste test local wines and potions in the winery and taproom. If it’s the historical sort of stuff you’re mostly interested in, Leeds Castle (25 minutes) and Scotney Castle (25 minutes) will get that in full swing. Straight out of the 17th century, Knole Park (half an hour) is a National Trust site with a deer park, gatehouse tower and attics. Sissinghurst Castle Garden (half an hour) is another historical spot, with a Grade I-listed park and gardens. As for peaceful walks by the river and picnics in meadows, head to Teston Bridge Country Park (10 minutes).
