Camping in the pond field

  • Family-run farm campsite 20 minutes' walk from Hever Castle
  • Chiddingstone and Penshurst Place within a 10-minute drive
  • On-site carp and roach fishing available; firewood for sale
Camping in Kent is a fine option indeed, whether you're after family-friendly breaks in the Garden of England, wine-tasting vineyard voyages or just a quiet rural break within easy reach of London. Hever Camping, a family-run site half a mile from the small village of Markbeech, makes an excellent base for all three – and with a good dose of history thrown in too… Managed by sisters Sarah and Gina, the farm where Hever Camping is based has been in the hands of the same family for over 100 years, meaning your hosts are very knowledgeable about the local area. Originally a dairy farm attached to the Hever Castle estate, the cows are now long gone – but the grand grounds of the castle and its gardens are easily accessed on foot in around 20 minutes. Hever Camping is split into two parts – Farm Field, with toilets and washing-up area (with hot water) and the more remote Pond Field, with toilets and cold water. The farm is home to a woodland, a pond, trees that are great for climbing and a Wendy house for the kids. On-site angling is available, with likely catches including carp and roach. Firewood is sold here too (subject to availability). Nearby off-site amenities include Markbeech's pub and farm shop (10 minutes' walk from the site gates) and Cowden railway station (20 minutes), where direct trains can take you to London Bridge in as little as 45 minutes.

What customers say

A spacious and peaceful campsite set in beautiful countryside, offering freedom to pitch where you like. Visitors praise the friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities, and hot showers. The on-site cafe is a convenient bonus, and fire pits are available. While generally well-regarded, some mention aircraft noise from Gatwick and basic facilities in certain areas. The site is well-suited for families and those seeking a relaxed, back-to-basics camping experience.

Farm field non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Friendly welcome, clean and reasonably level pitch. Pretty much every family had a wood fire at night and it was lovely. Good washing up facilities, nice little play area for the kids within sight of the tents so they can have some independence.
We went to Hever castle one day, then Godstone Farm (fantastic play areas) the next. Locally, there is a Waitrose for shopping.
It is worth noting that the toilet block has one step into it but is then level. The shower block (much nicer inside than it looks from outside) is not accessible at all if you have any mobility issues. That's not a negative against this campsite, but it's useful to know for those who have to consider these things.

Farm field non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Facilities were more than adequate. Nice location, friendly owners/managers. I only used once, but good showers.

Disliked Moody family turned up on day two of our trip (not the sites fault) but the dad was constantly swearing and playing music from a boom box too loud. After 4 hours of reggae blaring across our end of the campsite I had to tell them to turn it down as I had young children I was desperately trying to get to sleep. After 22:00 is too late for any music that disturbs others. Disappointed this was not better policed by the onsite staff.

The only real negative I could attribute was that it was not mentioned that the site was under a flight path, or holding pattern area. On night one there must have been 20 aircraft passing overhead at night, obviously Gatwick related, hence quite low. Would have been nice to have been made aware of this from the booking/website.

From the manager: Hi there,
Thanks for your review.
We are glad you enjoyed the site and facilities. We are so sorry you had that experience with other campers. We do late checks in the evenings of the fields, to make sure music is low after 10pm and off by 11pm. If there is a problem, we request that we be contacted on the campsite phone, so we can address the issue, which we would do promptly. I'm afraid that if we haven't witnessed it or been made aware then we won't be able to resolve the issue.
The aircraft can vary depending on the weather, so it's difficult to accuratly describe what a camper may experience.
We hope to welcome you again.
Kind regards,
The Hever Camping Team

Farm Field non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Nice spacious site with level pitches in Pond Field. Close to a nice local pub.

Disliked The toilet facilities were not really adequate for the number of campers. Very small low cubicles which got a bit grotty with so much use. (It is school holidays so busy). It was cleaned in the morning. One toilet block (ladies) completely out of use. Pond field is quite a long way from the showers and the cafe at Farm Field.

From the manager: Hi there,
Thanks for your review. We are glad you enjoyed the field and local pubs.
The toilets are cleaned 4 times a day. The other toilet block you noted is a new block, which we are currently arranging installation, so that will be available very soon and also it has a shower. Upon booking, you had the option of booking the field with the showers and close to the food wagon. Many campers who stay with us enjoy the more remoteness of the Pond Field, which is only a 10 minute walk from the food and showers. You are very welcome to also use the showers in the Farm Field, by either a walk or a 2 minute drive along the road.
We hope you are abe to return when our new facilities are up and running.
Kind regards,
The Hever Camping Team

Pond field non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Large open space, relaxed atmosphere. We stayed in Pond Field which feels very remote/wild, just a toilet block and cold water, which is exactly what we were looking for. Field was well kept and tidy. Very good access to local walks and pubs.

Farm Field non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked The ladies, Sarah and Julie (sorry if wrong) who greeted us were friendly and welcoming. Informative about our stay and amenities. Chatted with them both a couple of times during our stay and they came to our rescue with the loan of a chair!

Showers were amazing , super hot and never a queue.

Toilets plentiful and kept clean throughout our stay, im sure julie cleans them every hour or so..

We will definitely be back.. loved the old farm vehicles throughout their site too

Pond field non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Clean amenities
Easy access from London
Quiet
Loads of open space to pitch away from others
Cafe available nearby for food & drinks

Disliked Check-in required at farm-site. More clear signs required if you are heading to pond site, to show you need to check in here first.
Entrance to the pond-site is easy to miss.
Woodland trail is a bit overlooked, needs some trimming and a bit of repair so children can enjoy it.

Local attractions

First port of call around these parts simply has to be the excellent Hever Castle (20 minutes' walk or five minutes' drive): the childhood home of Anne Boleyn has plenty of attractions to keep you busy for a full day out, including a water maze, playgrounds and a fab series of summer events including things like jousting tournaments and open-air theatre shows. For a bit more on the local history front, head to Chartwell (15 minutes' drive), a long-term haunt of Winston Churchill, or to Penshurst Place (10 minutes), where you can tour the medieval manor or trot around the estate's 100 acres, taking in the lakes, adventure playground and woodland trails along the way. More of the past is on display in Chiddingstone (five minutes), a well-preserved Tudor village managed by the National Trust. Need something to keep the kids entertained? Edenbridge (10 minutes) has a well-maintained public leisure centre nearby if they've got excess energy to burn off, while trips to top local theme parks like Diggerland Kent (55 minutes) or zoos like the UK Owl and Raptor Centre (20 minutes) could also be in the offing.
