Woodsman Kent Wild Camping and Glamping: Wood anenomes

General

  • Rural stays for over-16s in 200 acres of ancient Kent woodland
  • Nine miles from the train station at Ashford and 1.9 from Pluckley
  • Campfires welcome, with wood sold on site

This Kent site is well named, for Woodsman Kent Wild Camping is indeed wild and surrounded by woods… 200 acres of ancient woodland in fact.

This is a good place to head for if you're escaping from London, as it takes about 40 minutes to get to the site from St Pancras via the nearest Kent station at Ashford nine miles away; from there, take the train to Pluckley and it's about 40 minutes' hike to the site (or drive down from London in about an hour and a half).

And it's all very simple on site too: this is proper wild-style camping with only minimal amenities – essentially it's just you, your tent (or tarp, or bivvy) and the forest floor (although there is a compost loo available). Water can be bought for an extra charge.

Woodsman is on 200 acres of ancient oak, ash, birch, poplar, hazel, hawthorn and hornbeam forest. Wood for small cooking fires is sold on site – but please do keep fires small (no large heating fires) and please do not forage for wood from the forest floor, as this disturbs the ecosystem.

The site asks that all guests respect the countryside code during their stay, operating on the main principle of leaving no trace (for ecological reasons, no foraging from the woodland, please).

Please note

Guests under the age of 16 are not allowed on site.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

Quiet location within a beautiful setting surrounded by trees, wild life and blue bells. A photography of the unusual entrance gate into the site from the main road would make it slightly easier to find.

Amazing place to stay, the woods are truly magical. Almost the entire forest floor bed is lined with bluebells among other wild flowers. The small number of pitches are completely secluded from each other and our were set inside the bluebell forest. Closet thing to wild camping you'll get.

    Beautiful location

The unmettled track through the woodland to access the pitches is in a very bad state - presumably worse after the Winter, we don’t have an SUV but fortunately we have all weather tyres otherwise am unsure we would have made it in. We were a bit surprised on being texted and then called after it was noticed our car had gone, just before 5 - to be informed that the gate was usually locked at 5pm then on the phone 6pm(??!!) and when I said we had not realised was told that this was on the website Pitchup where we booked. I have double checked and it is not and if it had been we wouldn’t have booked. Michael readily said he would leave it open and wasn’t rude or nasty but we felt like naughty children and a need to rush back! For us it would seem restrictive on a holiday and particularly after the last 2 years we’re definitely not up for that, I can understand weather permitting or not you may want to stay on-site the whole time but we like to explore an area and when it’s cold which it was have some time in the great indoors! Beautiful woodland with great ethos on compost loos and leave no trace but a fear of breaking the car on the road and the unknown 5pm/6pm curfew is just not for us..

From the manager...

This is a forest site so there are forest tracks, I have never had any complaints regarding this before, even from people without specialist tyres.

As far as texting, the carpark is closed after 6 for the safety of peoples cars. In this instance, at your request I left the gate open late, and I believe we resolved this issue at the time. I was on site the whole time, but locking up is a precaution I deem necessary to take at night.

This is wild camping, if you want an average camping experience there are a lot of options where you can drive in and park directly at your tent at any hour. The service we offer is really for people who want to park up, walk into, and experience the forest. It is designed to be as close to wilderness as possible whilst maintaining the comfort of our guests.

I don't think the leave no trace ethos of the site was respected, as you climbed over my fences and those of my neighbours, and crushed many wild flowers without a thought. It says very clearly to stick to established paths in the leaflet I gave you and on the website.

Local attractions

You may well wish to spend much of your time contentedly wandering through the woodland or finding a serene spot to sit and read… but if you're up for exploring a bit more, there's quite a bit to do close by.

Access the North Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty from the ancient village of Westwell 10 minutes' drive east at Westwell Downs (where locals of yore erected beacons to signal the approach of the Spanish Armada). From the Downs, you can also stride along some of the nearby 119-mile Pilgrims Way, the route taken by the devout from Winchester to Canterbury and the shrine of Thomas Becket at the city cathedral.

Heading towards the coast, it's a 40-minute drive from Woodsman to Whitstable, home of sandy and shingle beaches, an 18th-century castle, waters popular for yachting and waterskiing, and the tasty samples of the Whitstable Oyster Festival. Other Kent highlights are within easy day trip distance: try Leeds Castle (25 minutes), Port Lympne Reserve (30 minutes), Dover Castle (40 minutes) and more beaches at Folkestone and Rye (35 and 40 minutes).

Must see

  • Leeds Castle (6.6 miles)
  • Ashford Designer Outlet (7.0 miles)
  • Sissinghurst Castle Garden (7.2 miles)
