Wood anenomes

General

  • Wild camping for over-16s, in 200 acres of ancient Kent woodland
  • Nine miles from the train station at Ashford and 1.9 from Pluckley
  • Forest floor pitches and wood available

This Kent site is well named, for Woodsman Kent Wild Camping is exactly how it sounds: wild camping pitches on a forest floor for you to indulge or hone your outdoor skills.

No cunning skill is required to get here if you're escaping from London for a couple of nights though, as it takes about 40 minutes to get to the site from St Pancras via the nearest Kent station at Ashford nine miles away; from there, take the train to Pluckley and it's about 40 minutes' hike to the site (or drive down from London in about an hour and a half). And it's all very simple on site too: this is proper wild camping with no facilities or amenities – just you, your tent (or tarp, or bivvy) and the forest floor.

Woodsman is on 200 acres of ancient oak, ash, birch, poplar, hazel, hawthorn and hornbeam forest, for wild camping for a maximum of two people and two nights per booking. Wood for small cooking fires is provided free of charge for each booking - but please use no more than you need and keep fires small (no large heating fires).

The site asks that all guests respect the countryside code during their stay, operating on the main principle of leaving no trace (for ecological reasons, no foraging from the woodland, please). Please also see the terms and conditions below regarding the site's location.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests under the age of 16 are not allowed on site.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Bookings must not be for more than 2 consecutive nights.

A lovely natural place to pitch in beautiful countryside. The woods were a joy, full of autumn colour. This is definitely a suitable spot for anyone who likes to use a tarp or bivvy bag.
Many thanks to Michael for selecting a good location for our camp and for giving us information about the woods and the area.

    Disliked:

There is only one negative - there is a country road nearby and the noise of the traffic can be quite intrusive at times. However, this is quiet at night and if you are out walking once you are over a brow of a hill all noise disappears.

Lovey and well managed woodland and we very much liked the isolation. We were provided with plenty on firewood and enjoyed the walks. Worth every penny as it is evident in the effort to maintain the ecology of the surroundings.
    Definitely will return often.

I wasn’t sure what to expect as I had never wild camped solo before, but I was pleasantly surprised. This location is quiet, peaceful, and full of wildlife. The owner of the site (Mick) was very accommodating, and was on hand if I needed anything, but basically left me to it for the two days I spent there. As there are not many local shops near by and the nearest being a 2 mile walk away, I would recommend bringing enough water to last the duration of the stay as running out can be a bit of a pain when the gate to the site is locked. All in all, I would highly recommend this place and I will definitely be coming back in the future.

Great location, my brother and I had lovely weather for the weekend and the woods looked stunning in the sunshine and woodsmoke. We stayed under tarps and practiced bushcraft and camp cooking, we went for a nice walk to Pluckley stopping off at the Rose and Crown for a drink on the way back.
Mike was a great host with some fascinating stories about the woodland and his habitat restoration activities. We heard lots of owls and saw bats, and on the last morning a friendly vole joined us by the campfire for breakfast as if they were trying to keep warm - it was quite a joy to see!

A great weekend and would like to return

    Simon

The new charge of £20 per pp per day seemed a little expensive but at least the proceeds it can go towards the management of the woods

Local attractions

As you're only here for two nights, you'll probably spend much of your time contentedly wandering through the woodland or finding a serene spot to sit and read… but if you're on a longer-haul trip and are moving on to other Kentish pastures after your stay, there's quite a bit to do close by.

Access the North Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty from the ancient village of Westwell 10 minutes' drive east at Westwell Downs (where locals of yore erected beacons to signal the approach of the Spanish Armada). From the Downs, you can also stride along some of the nearby 119-mile Pilgrims Way, the route taken by the devout from Winchester to Canterbury and the shrine of Thomas Becket at the city cathedral.

Heading towards the coast, it's a 40-minute drive from Woodsman to Whitstable, home of sandy and shingle beaches, an 18th-century castle, waters popular for yachting and waterskiing, and the tasty samples of the Whitstable Oyster Festival. Other Kent highlights are within easy day trip distance: try Leeds Castle (25 minutes), Port Lympne Reserve (30 minutes), Dover Castle (40 minutes) and more beaches at Folkestone and Rye (35 and 40 minutes).

Must see

  • Leeds Castle (10.6 kilometres)
  • Ashford Designer Outlet (11.2 kilometres)
  • Sissinghurst Castle Garden (11.6 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Sissinghurst Castle Garden (12.5 kilometres)
