Woodsman Kent Wild Camping: Wood anenomes

General

  • Rural stays for over-16s in 200 acres of ancient Kent woodland
  • Nine miles from the train station at Ashford and 1.9 from Pluckley
  • Campfires welcome, with wood available on site

This Kent site is well named, for Woodsman Kent Wild Camping is indeed wild and surrounded by woods… 200 acres of ancient woodland in fact.

This is a good place for wild camping if you're escaping from London for a couple of nights, as it takes about 40 minutes to get to the site from St Pancras via the nearest Kent station at Ashford nine miles away; from there, take the train to Pluckley and it's about 40 minutes' hike to the site (or drive down from London in about an hour and a half).

And it's all very simple on site too: this is proper wild-style camping with only minimal amenities – essentially it's just you, your tent (or tarp, or bivvy) and the forest floor (although there is a compost loo available, and a five-litre water bottle can be provided for a small charge for those who aren't able to bring their own supplies).

Woodsman is on 200 acres of ancient oak, ash, birch, poplar, hazel, hawthorn and hornbeam forest. Wood for small cooking fires is provided free of charge for each booking – but please use no more than you need and keep fires small (no large heating fires).

The site asks that all guests respect the countryside code during their stay, operating on the main principle of leaving no trace (for ecological reasons, no foraging from the woodland, please).

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests under the age of 16 are not allowed on site.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Bookings must not be for more than 2 consecutive nights.

Magical place with bluebells and white flowers carpeting the forest floor. The bell tent was very cute, homely and comfy (good double mattress, bedding and fairy lights). Water with herbs in was a great touch.

Very peaceful! - people were very helpful. Our pitch was level and quiet. Great walking in the close by Dering Woods and the Mundy Bois pub is only a 10 minute walk. The compostable toilet was 'well received'

    Disliked:

Not much really - the little track was a little tricky as our van is low to the ground - not a problem though if you take it slow.

Beautiful Woodland, Great Owner, Perfect pitches04/26/2021

We spent 2 nights at Woodsman Wood at the end of April and it was absolutely fantastic. Spring was well underway and the wood was coming alive... Bluebells and Wood Anemone littered the floor and birds of all species were flying around above, in and out of the bird boxes that they have put up.
Mick, the owner, was fantastic. He showed us to our pitch, gave us an insight into the woodland and then left us too it. He explained that they are working hard to manage the woodland correctly and it's easy to see that there hard work is paying off.
The pitches have a low impact on the woodland and it was great to sit round the fire and just enjoy the surroundings. We will definitely return!

Great location with plenty of historical significance. Great places to pitch in a secure area which has gated access from the main road which prohibits any unwanted vehicles onto the area. You'll be allocated a firepit and presented with a large bag of logs of wood which have been processed onsite. Private parking available within a few yards from your pitch which is great if you'd like to bring a few extra items of camping gear which you wouldn't usually want to hike in with. This was my second visit and will not be my last. Highly recommended

Local attractions

As you're only here for two nights, you'll probably spend much of your time contentedly wandering through the woodland or finding a serene spot to sit and read… but if you're on a longer-haul trip and are moving on to other Kentish pastures after your stay, there's quite a bit to do close by.

Access the North Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty from the ancient village of Westwell 10 minutes' drive east at Westwell Downs (where locals of yore erected beacons to signal the approach of the Spanish Armada). From the Downs, you can also stride along some of the nearby 119-mile Pilgrims Way, the route taken by the devout from Winchester to Canterbury and the shrine of Thomas Becket at the city cathedral.

Heading towards the coast, it's a 40-minute drive from Woodsman to Whitstable, home of sandy and shingle beaches, an 18th-century castle, waters popular for yachting and waterskiing, and the tasty samples of the Whitstable Oyster Festival. Other Kent highlights are within easy day trip distance: try Leeds Castle (25 minutes), Port Lympne Reserve (30 minutes), Dover Castle (40 minutes) and more beaches at Folkestone and Rye (35 and 40 minutes).

Must see

  • Leeds Castle (10.6 kilometers)
  • Ashford Designer Outlet (11.2 kilometers)
  • Sissinghurst Castle Garden (11.6 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Sissinghurst Castle Garden (12.5 kilometers)
  • Stoneacre (13.4 kilometers)
