Troopers View Campsite: Grassy pitches

General

  • Scenic and secluded pop-up farm site with views of the Shorwell Downs
  • A 15-minute drive from Blackgang Chine and 25 minutes from Osborne
  • Barbecues and dogs allowed; pubs, café and food shop a short walk away

Set yourself up for a scenic stay at Troopers View Campsite. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Isle of Wight, this place is all abuzz with the full-on countryside, including views over the Shorwell Downs… and while you’re on your rural wanders, you’ll find many walking and cycling trails surrounding the site.

Thanks to the pretty central location on the island, you’ll be free to roam as far as you desire. Whether it’s horse riding, mountain biking, surfing or watersports you have in mind for the day, there’s a handy bus stop at the entrance to the site to get about. Plus, half an hour’s walk away in Brighstone, the neighbouring village, there are bicycle and E-bikes for hire for those of you who’d rather bike your way around and soak in the views en-route.

When you’re hit by a thirst for a pint or a nice helping of food, then the site is a 10-minute walk away from a traditional country pub and a little village shop where you may track down breakfast and basics. In Brighstone, there’s a café (a hot breakfast spot), newsagents and another pub serving lunch, dinner and local ales – there’s a big beer garden here to kick back outdoors and nurse a pint while the kids scamper about in the playground.

On site, there are convenient facilities including a water supply, toilet and general waste bins. This is a rather laidback place, welcoming families and dogs, and permitting barbecues so that you can get together on an evening.

Very nice site, not overcrowded,(comparing with other nearby sites, where hundreds of tents were next to each other, all pitches numbered, etc), giving plenty of space between the tents, to ensure privacy (in fact there was no markings for the pitches, visitors were free to take reasonable space). Nice young landlords, extremely hard working, welcoming the visitors, putting efforts to keep the site clean and friendly, to make it pleasant and attractive, without urbanising it, without ruining the natural beauty.
The site is surrounded by a lovely, picturesque nature, including a couple of friendly horses, pasturing behind the tents. And just a few minutes driving from a nice beach ~ we will highly recommend it for a peaceful and relaxing break.

The site had 3 porta loos that were cleaned out daily, I never had an issue with them. Upon arrival you could park wherever you wanted and the field was a good size (on a slight slope) so it did not feel too packed. Bins were provided at the entrance and a water tap at one end of the field.
Overall a good base for our trip to the island.

    Disliked:

No recycling facilities. Given the number of bottles and cans I saw in the bin area this would be a good idea for the future.

We didn't see owners at all, maybe that's why people turned up after 10pm setting up tents and being extremely noisy until midnight, as no-one was there to administer. There are 3 portable loos, but nowhere to wash your hands. Pitch is on slope by quite busy road. Few rubbish laying around. We didn't like it so we shortened our stay there.

I really can't fault this site. It did what is said on the tin. No thrills rural setting on the greener side of the Island. The owner of the land regularly cleaned the toilets up and supplied toilet roll and took rubbish away. Clean drinking water tap available at all times. Allowing dogs was a plus and all the dogs there were well behaved and kept close to their owners tents. The views of the sea and surrounding landscape of hills and lush fields was very pleasing on the eye. It was quiet and not rowdy. Just people minding their own business and enjoying their time with their family or loved ones. Our neighbour was friendly and helped us when we initially arrived to put up the tent and also helped us at the end. People were very friendly and willing to help and lend items if needed such as a hammer. We gave some neighbours a few left over eggs when we left. If you want a basic rustic experience off grid with no electric or shower just amidst nature this is a great option and everything is in such close proximity. We had an electric vehicle and found plenty of charge points around the island easy to use. Overall a good experience and would go back. The owner always came around to check in that all was ok and if people needed anything which was appreciated.

    Disliked:

This is not really a dislike but of course would be nice to have a shower or portashower just to allow people to freshen up although for me that is part of the camping experience so I didn't mind too much. I am sure it could enhance the site even more if the owner considered adding a portashower. Maybe it is something they will consider for next year. Overall though cannot complain about anything.

Carisbrooke Castle (10 minutes) and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway (25 minutes) might ignite a passion for history.
