  • Friendly site on a working farm five minutes' drive from Ryde
  • Beaches, steam railway and ferry port within 10 minutes' drive
  • Nostalgia-inspired traditional site with farm shop and animals to meet
Camping at its most traditional… and in a peaceful spot tucked away on a family-run working farm in the Isle of Wight. Retro Staycations, a few minutes’ drive from Ryde, is a place that’s been heavily influenced by nostalgic holiday vibes and makes a fine place to stay with family, friends, your partner, your dog – whoever wants to tag along, really. As the site is part of a farm, there are plenty of cute animals to make friends with while you’re here – look out for sheep, pigs and cows in the neighbouring fields and wildlife including rabbits and red squirrels. The accommodation areas are within a pretty meadow that’s got heaps of space and lovely views over the surrounding downs area. In keeping with the retro vibe, facilities here have been kept on the simple side – guests have access to a toilet block with toilets and showers (and heating, for a nice modern boost), washing-up sinks and a chemical disposal point. A farm shop on site sells local produce (eggs, milk, veg and local meat), and of course you’ll be allowed to light a barbecue or off-ground firepit to help you cook your meals and keep warm. Nearby Ryde is your closest hub for shops and places to eat, and it’s also a popular resort with sandy beaches and some smart Georgian and Victorian architecture. Handily, it’s also one of the island’s ferry ports; ask in advance and the site can provide you with details of discounted ferry travel for guests.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, friendly campsite with a relaxed atmosphere, spacious pitches, and clean facilities. Many visitors enjoyed the quiet location, ideal for unwinding and close to attractions. The on-site farm shop and communal areas with fire pits are popular. While some noted potential queues for the single shower and the need for more washing-up surfaces, new shower facilities are being installed. The track leading to the site has been rectified after weather damage.

Liked Spacious, warm and cosy. Toilets and shower were very clean and tidy. Plenty of grounds for the kids to play.

Disliked Perhaps they should hire out camping equipment.

Recommend to friends Visit again

Your suggestion regarding equipment rental is valuable, and whilst most people bring their own, we will consider it for future plans. If there is anything else we can do to enhance your experience, please let us know. Many thanks for staying with us!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Shaded area, fridge freezer, relaxed atmosphere.

Disliked Only one shower (however more are being built).

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: It was lovely to meet you all last week, and thank you for highlighting the various aspects of your stay you enjoyed, such as the shaded area and relaxed atmosphere. We continue to listen to customer feedback in order to identify requirements as the site becomes ever more popular, and appreciate your patience as we work on improving our current shower facilities. The new shower block you saw will offer four more showers in addition to the two existing ones and should be up and running in the coming weeks. We hope to see you and your friends again soon!

I probably wouldn't camp here again.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Location was good, it was nice to have the option of putting items in the fridge freezer to keep cool.

Disliked There was only 1 shower for men and one shower for women which meant there was a queue to use the facilities. Also the lady who cleaned the toilet block was incredibly rude to my daughter and my mother and then proceeded to complain about them to me, as she did not know we were related. She also made my daughter wait 20 minutes to use the shower and moaned to her about the fact she had sandy feet... we had just been to the beach. Why you would clean the toilets and shower at 4pm, when people are returning from being out, is a mystery to me and then make sarcastic comments about the grass, its a campsite.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, and we're pleased to hear you enjoyed our location and found the fridge/freezer facilities useful.

We're sorry to hear that aspects of your stay fell short of expectations, and we'd like to take the opportunity to address your points.

Regarding the shower facilities, we understand that queuing can be frustrating, and we completely appreciate your patience. We do have a brand new shower block — which you may have noticed right next to the existing facilities — adding a further 4 showers. We are working through the necessary sign-off legalities to get this opened in the coming week, and we very much look forward to the improvement this will bring for our guests.

With regard to the timing of the cleaning, as is standard practice at campsites, our facilities have a daily cleaning window to ensure the highest hygiene standards for all guests, and we appreciate your patience and understanding in this respect. On this particular day, we had several same-day changeovers for our Airstream accommodation, with check-ins from 3pm, which meant the earliest opportunity to carry out a thorough clean was a little later than usual. We apologise if this coincided with your return from your day out, and are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

We are sorry to hear that your daughter and mother felt they were spoken to rudely — there is absolutely no excuse for that, and it is not the standard of customer care we expect or accept. We take this matter very seriously and it is being addressed with the team member concerned, who we believe you are a former acquaintance of, as a priority.

We have made several attempts to reach you by phone to discuss this personally and explain the measures that are being put in place to make this right.

We hope that, overall, you enjoyed the time spent with your friends and that you will join them when they next return to see the new shower facilities in operation.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Just got home from four nights on site, its a great basic camp site, in a perfect location, near the IOW Steam Railway, you can even here the trains!!
We had an electric tent pitch, which has water on the pitch, adequate size for a large tent and a car or van.
Large free camping area in the middle of the field, BBQ's and Fire Pits are allowed, and a "honesty" farm shop selling a selection of quality farm products at the entrance.
The staff are lovely and friendly, and can help at any time with any issues, or, as we needed, advice on local attractions and shops etc.
The pitches are fairly flat, although the site has a very slight slope.
A great communal area with a fire pit, ranch style to get everyone together.
And one of the best things, after 10pm near total silence.

Disliked Nothing
