General

  • Peaceful countryside site in a central Isle of Wight location
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches, Osborne House and the zoo
  • Linked to a traditional pub with meals, beer garden and play area

Bedding down somewhere within easy reach of a pub is often a fine idea for the simple convenience of having drinks and dinner within easy stumbling distance. And of course one surefire way to achieve that is to park up at a pitch owned by a pub…

And that’s exactly what you can do at the Chequers Inn, which has caravan pitches just a few minutes’ stroll from the country pub of the same name a couple of minutes’ drive from the Isle of Wight village of Rookley.

The surroundings here are full-on countryside, with plenty of walking and bike routes nearby (and a bus stop half an hour’s walk away if you’d like to explore further). The location pretty much in the centre of the island is handy for getting out and about to all the top attractions too: beaches, the zoo, Carisbrooke Castle and Osborne House are all within a 20-minute drive.

Roam as far and wide as you wish, safe in the knowledge that eats and drinks await back at base. The inn itself is a traditional pub that serves up breakfasts, lunches and dinners along with local ales and cool drinks. There’s a big beer garden outside for fine days, and a sizeable play area where the kids can scamper about while you sip your pint. Food can be delivered to your pitch if you’ve run out of steam and fancy an easy night in.

Facilities for the pitches include a water supply and a waste disposal area; guests can also use the pub facilities during opening hours. It’s a laidback place that’s happy to welcome families and dogs, and allows campfires and barbecues.

Stabling stays are also available, and include a stable for one horse and bedding. The stables are just a few minutes' walk from the pitches. Surrounded by extensive off-road riding, this is a great place to explore in your saddle. Other facilities for horses include ample parking space for vehicles, horse boxes and trailers, an indoor and outdoor arena, an XC schooling field, a walker, a horse solarium and show jumps.

Please note

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The games room is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Reception is unmanned after 10 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Tents are not accepted at this park.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

The pub, should have thought to book a table, as it was very busy that night. The hard standing pitch was great due to poor weather. Given the pitch number by text or pitch up message, paid on arrival and electric is included in pitch fee.

Beautiful views pub staff friendly & helpful, ate in the restaurant several times, menu had a good choice of dishes to choose from.
    Carvery Sunday 12-8pm.
No toilet or showers but you are able to use the toilets in the pub during opening hours.

    Disliked:

Please be aware that the pub needs to run an extremely noisy generator to provide extra power for the Sunday carvery & also if the pub is hosting a large function in one of the public rooms. The generator actually made the floor of our Motorhomes vibrate.
The car park gets very busy which you need to drive through to get to the campsite so can be a bit tricky to negotiate with MH or caravans. Being one of the highest points on the island is affected by very high winds & was windy the whole 6 days we were there.

Hard standing pitches with water & electric hookups. Pub does good food with friendly staff & is a good base for us away from the Isle of Wight festival. (Great bus route, following permissive footpath through fields, to attend - an hour to get back with a combination of walking & local buses).

Fantastic campsite with all the facilities you need for a basic but well looked after stay. At £22, you can't go wrong with electric hook-up, water tap for every two pitches and also a chemical waste area. The Chequers Inn are so accommodating and the staff are lovely and can't do enough for you 😊 We booked a table in advance for dinner, which was perfect. The toilet situation works well as the pub is open in the morning and doesn't shut until 10pm to be able to use the loo! Will definitely be back 😊 Thanks! X

Local attractions

The Isle of Wight is packed with things to do, and from this central spot they’re all pretty easy to access. If you’re here for the coast (good choice), it’s a 15-minute drive to the sandy stretches at Ventnor and Shanklin, or half an hour to snap pics of The Needles from the coast path.

Alternative days out for those with kids in tow might include the rides and themed areas (like Underwater World and Cowboy Town) at Blackgang Chine (10 minutes’ drive), the falconry displays, toboggan slides and mini train rides at Robin Hill (10 minutes) or meeting the residents of the Isle of Wight Zoo (20 minutes).

To throw a bit of heritage into the mix, plan days out at former royal summer residence Carisbrooke Castle (10 minutes) and ornate Osborne House (20 minutes), of which Queen Victoria said ‘it is impossible to imagine a prettier spot’. The Isle of Wight Steam Railway (15 minutes) is another excellent way to get a sense of times gone by.

Must see

  • Carisbrooke Castle (3.3 miles)
  • Blackgang Chine (4.1 miles)

  • Brighstone Shop and Museum (5.1 miles)
