The Chequers Inn: A bird's-eye view of the site

General

  • Peaceful countryside site in a central Isle of Wight location
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches, Osborne House and the zoo
  • Linked to a traditional pub with meals, beer garden and play area

Bedding down somewhere within easy reach of a pub is often a fine idea for the simple convenience of having drinks and dinner within easy stumbling distance. And of course one surefire way to achieve that is to park up at a pitch owned by a pub…

And that’s exactly what you can do at the Chequers Inn, which has caravan pitches just a few minutes’ stroll from the country pub of the same name a couple of minutes’ drive from the Isle of Wight village of Rookley.

The surroundings here are full-on countryside, with plenty of walking and bike routes nearby (and a bus stop half an hour’s walk away if you’d like to explore further). The location pretty much in the centre of the island is handy for getting out and about to all the top attractions too: beaches, the zoo, Carisbrooke Castle and Osborne House are all within a 20-minute drive.

Roam as far and wide as you wish, safe in the knowledge that eats and drinks await back at base. The inn itself is a traditional pub that serves up breakfasts, lunches and dinners along with local ales and cool drinks. There’s a big beer garden outside for fine days, and a sizeable play area where the kids can scamper about while you sip your pint. Food can be delivered to your pitch if you’ve run out of steam and fancy an easy night in.

Facilities for the pitches include a water supply, compost toilet and waste disposal area; guests can also use the pub facilities during opening hours. It’s a laidback place that’s happy to welcome families and dogs, and allows campfires and barbecues.

Please note

Tents are not accepted at this park.

The games room is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

Reception is unmanned after 10 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Underwhelmed22/09/2022

  • Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

  • Liked:

    Food was decent enough
    Portaloos were clean
    Some nice walks
Water and electricity for each pitch as described

    Disliked:

Pub not open on first night, albeit 19th September (the Queens funeral) and no notice or information given to that effect, so the easy first night in a pitch behind a pub with an evening meal and use of pub facilities was a washout. Reported this to bar staff when checking in next day when pub reopened and met with, oh, I think that was a last minute thing.
Pitches seem to be on a bridle way that is in fairly regular use from early hours. Long grass made for soggy feet in the morning, fine for rough camping but that isn’t how this is portrayed.
Food, although nice enough, bore rather inflated prices and liver shouldn’t be hard to cut.
Overall impression was that we could have arrived, pitched and left with no contact so it felt a bit like paying to park in the pub car park.
Won’t return, not for any specific issue but because it was just all round underwhelming and there is considerably better on offer nearby.

Local attractions

The Isle of Wight is packed with things to do, and from this central spot they’re all pretty easy to access. If you’re here for the coast (good choice), it’s a 15-minute drive to the sandy stretches at Ventnor and Shanklin, or half an hour to snap pics of The Needles from the coast path.

Alternative days out for those with kids in tow might include the rides and themed areas (like Underwater World and Cowboy Town) at Blackgang Chine (10 minutes’ drive), the falconry displays, toboggan slides and mini train rides at Robin Hill (10 minutes) or meeting the residents of the Isle of Wight Zoo (20 minutes).

To throw a bit of heritage into the mix, plan days out at former royal summer residence Carisbrooke Castle (10 minutes) and ornate Osborne House (20 minutes), of which Queen Victoria said ‘it is impossible to imagine a prettier spot’. The Isle of Wight Steam Railway (15 minutes) is another excellent way to get a sense of times gone by.

Must see

  • Carisbrooke Castle (3.3 miles)
  • Blackgang Chine (4.1 miles)
  • Ventnor Botanic Gardens (4.3 miles)

National Trust

  • Brighstone Shop and Museum (5.1 miles)
  • Mottistone Manor Garden (6.2 miles)
