Pitches

  • Peaceful countryside site in a central Isle of Wight location
  • A 20-minute drive from beaches, Osborne House and the zoo
  • Linked to a traditional pub with meals, beer garden and play area
Bedding down somewhere within easy reach of a pub is often a fine idea for the simple convenience of having drinks and dinner within easy stumbling distance. And of course one surefire way to achieve that is to park up at a pitch owned by a pub… And that’s exactly what you can do at the Chequers Inn, which has caravan pitches just a few minutes’ stroll from the country pub of the same name a couple of minutes’ drive from the Isle of Wight village of Rookley. The surroundings here are full-on countryside, with plenty of walking and bike routes nearby (and a bus stop half an hour’s walk away if you’d like to explore further). The location pretty much in the centre of the island is handy for getting out and about to all the top attractions too: beaches, the zoo, Carisbrooke Castle and Osborne House are all within a 20-minute drive. Roam as far and wide as you wish, safe in the knowledge that eats and drinks await back at base. The inn itself is a traditional pub that serves up breakfasts, lunches and dinners along with local ales and cool drinks. There’s a big beer garden outside for fine days, and a sizeable play area where the kids can scamper about while you sip your pint. Food can be delivered to your pitch if you’ve run out of steam and fancy an easy night in. Facilities for the pitches include a water supply and a waste disposal area; guests can also use the pub facilities during opening hours. It’s a laidback place that’s happy to welcome families and dogs, and allows campfires and barbecues. Stabling stays are also available, and include a stable for one horse and bedding. The stables are just a few minutes' walk from the pitches. Surrounded by extensive off-road riding, this is a great place to explore in your saddle. Other facilities for horses include ample parking space for vehicles, horse boxes and trailers, an indoor and outdoor arena, an XC schooling field, a walker, a horse solarium and show jumps.

What customers say

A tranquil rural campsite, loved for its spot next to The Chequers Inn (great food, friendly staff). Pitches are decent with water/elec. Enjoyed by dog walkers for quietness, but be aware of potential flooding in wet weather and portaloos needing a spruce-up. No showers.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked The pitch was lovely in a beautiful rural setting but with the pub for lovely meals and drinks. The food was excellent value, there was a good choice of beers and wines and the staff were lovely and very helpful. When we had an issue with the electricity supply on our pitch they sorted it straight away. Breakfast before departure was a bonus.

Disliked We were only there for one night so not a problem but there were no facilities to empty grey water or the toilet cassette which would be a plus.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Quiet location, good walking locations from the site, great family pub on-site, good kids play ground, water and electricity direct to the pitch, waste and Porta-loos on site (and pub toilets during opening hours), friendly staff, central location on the island, hardstanding pitch with grass for the awning. No washing up station or shower facilities but we knew this before booking (we were still OK with this).

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Was a last minute stop off, arrived when dark and you check in with the pub staff which I did have an evening meal in and can safely say the staff that night couldn't do enough, they were all pleasant and very helpful a true value to the establishment. Very small and compact site at the end of the pub carpark.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked Great location with acces to pub and great local dog walks downloadable from the pub website.

Disliked Although there's a site manager on-site the area could do with a thorough tidy up. There was a long roll of loo roll streamer like all over the hedge, general rubbish in the carpark area and by our pitch lots of old used tea lights scattered about. Also very expensive but that might have been as it was new year's eve?

Local attractions

The Isle of Wight is packed with things to do, and from this central spot they’re all pretty easy to access. If you’re here for the coast (good choice), it’s a 15-minute drive to the sandy stretches at Ventnor and Shanklin, or half an hour to snap pics of The Needles from the coast path. Alternative days out for those with kids in tow might include the rides and themed areas (like Underwater World and Cowboy Town) at Blackgang Chine (10 minutes’ drive), the falconry displays, toboggan slides and mini train rides at Robin Hill (10 minutes) or meeting the residents of the Isle of Wight Zoo (20 minutes). To throw a bit of heritage into the mix, plan days out at former royal summer residence Carisbrooke Castle (10 minutes) and ornate Osborne House (20 minutes), of which Queen Victoria said ‘it is impossible to imagine a prettier spot’. The Isle of Wight Steam Railway (15 minutes) is another excellent way to get a sense of times gone by.
