Woodlands Camping: Livery Yard at The Plantation

General

  • Small pop-up site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Winchester; half an hour from Marwell Zoo
  • Spacious pitches on a working farm; campfire wood for sale

Splendid Hampshire countryside views and plenty of peace and quiet are what’s on offer at Woodlands Camping. This small-scale pop-up site is just on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park about five minutes’ drive south of the village of Ropley.

If you’re after clubhouses, arcades and on-site entertainment you’ll want to look elsewhere: this site on a working farm is all about the fresh air, the rural peace and the lovely views. The folk that run the site have deliberately limited the number of pitches available in order to ensure plenty of space for everyone, and kept the amenities to just the essentials of toilets, showers and a washing-up area.

There’s a ‘leave no trace’ policy in place here, with guests all encouraged to do their bit to preserve the environment around them (and that stretches to being asked not to feed the farm’s horses, as much as they might bat their eyelashes at you in hope…) Campfires and barbecues are permitted but you’ll need to keep them in a suitable container off the ground; there’s wood available to buy on site from locally managed woodland.

Pick up supplies for your barbecue (or picnics while you’re out exploring the countryside) at the village store, or head to the bigger supermarkets in Winchester or Petersfield, both about 20 minutes’ drive away.

Please note

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 12 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Group bookings of 6 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the passenger door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Proper camping.24/09/2023

We stayed in the woodland. Easy to find. Very simple, no hassle check in. Lovely grounds with great facilities. A proper camping experience in my eyes. This is going to be my 'go to' spot now, I shall look no further. J was very welcoming and left us to it. It's a no fuss site which, is how I like it. The sights and sounds in the day and the night are just amazing. A lot of sites advertise 'woodland' or wild camping' but never truly deliver. Our spot was nestled in a proper covered woodland, the best I've ever stayed in.

    Disliked:

This is no biggy. It is slightly more expensive than other sites. I also bought a greener camping membership and have no idea if I'm now a member or not? However the pros heavily outweigh the cons with this site. I'd rather spend the money and know I'm getting what I like. However for the sake of the review, I thought it would be best to add this.

Great site, the description doesn’t do it justice. Lovely peaceful, spacious camping in the woods. Toilet and showers were more than expected for composting/outdoor. J was helpful on arrival and available if needed but left us to it - thank you!

Hot water for washing up would have been the only improvement

Grounds and area, plenty of walks, easy to find,
    Simple campsite. Can’t go wrong

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike except the shower by the portaloos was scolding hot, that needs turning down a bit,
Also but pricey for what it is, would Have liked it to have been a bit cheaper given how minimalist it is

How quiet and pretty it was. The showers and toilets were close by. Really lovely site with a friendly owner, who told us all about the place. Would definitely recommend for tents and motorhomes/campervans.

    Disliked:

It was quite tricky to find. Although "What 3 words" was provided we didn't have it on our phones, so would recommend downloading it beforehand. A Google map pin would be helpful and some more signs once you are onsite.

Plenty of space for us at the meadow, got there at the end of the season, so not too many campers. Nice to have some privacy and not be too worried about being chatty late at night. Fire pits a big bonus, great to sit around the fire

Local attractions

That South Downs location means lots of scope for walks and bike rides in gorgeous scenery. If you don’t know where to start, perhaps head for popular spots like the Queen Elizabeth Country Park or Harting Down (both about a half-hour drive) or park in West Meon (10 minutes) for a walk on the 10-mile Meon Valley Trail.

There are plenty of options for different days out too: literary fans may like to drop in at Jane Austen’s House (15 minutes), while those with more of a scientific outlook explore the exhibits at Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium (15 minutes). National Trust estates at Hinton Ampner (15 minutes) and Uppark (half an hour) are worth visiting as well.

The exotic animals, activities and adventure playgrounds make Marwell Zoo (half an hour) a top pick for family outings, and there are plenty of interesting things to seek out in Winchester (20 minutes) too. For a more relaxed outing, maybe a steam-powered ride on the Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line (15 minutes) will fit the bill?

Must see

  • Mid-Hants Railway 'Watercress Line' (3.5 miles)
  • Jane Austen's House (7.1 miles)
  • INTECH Science Centre & Planetarium (7.3 miles)
