  • Small Greener Camping Club site on the edge of the South Downs
  • A 20-minute drive from Winchester; half an hour from Marwell Zoo
  • Spacious pitches on a working farm; campfire wood for sale
Splendid Hampshire countryside views and plenty of peace and quiet are what’s on offer at Woodlands Camping. This small-scale pop-up site is just on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park about five minutes’ drive south of the village of Ropley. If you’re after clubhouses, arcades and on-site entertainment you’ll want to look elsewhere: this site on a working farm is all about the fresh air, the rural peace and the lovely views. The folk that run the site have deliberately limited the number of pitches available in order to ensure plenty of space for everyone, and kept the amenities to just the essentials of toilets, showers and a washing-up area. There’s a ‘leave no trace’ policy in place here, with guests all encouraged to do their bit to preserve the environment around them (and that stretches to being asked not to feed the farm’s horses, as much as they might bat their eyelashes at you in hope…) Campfires and barbecues are permitted but you’ll need to keep them in a suitable container off the ground; there’s wood available to buy on site from locally managed woodland. Pick up supplies for your barbecue (or picnics while you’re out exploring the countryside) at the village store, or head to the bigger supermarkets in Winchester or Petersfield, both about 20 minutes’ drive away.

Peaceful, spacious campsite with a natural, "back to basics" feel. Guests love the friendly owner, Jason, and beautiful surroundings. Facilities are generally clean & functional, though basic. Woodland pitches & generous spacing are highlights. Some note water supply issues & signage needs.

Littlewood primitive forest floor tent campsite (wild)

Liked The location was lovely and peaceful, wonderfully 'wild'. Far away from any noise of cars and towns.
Well equipped, the host met us and showed us around, and other than that we didnt have any interruptions, it was very peaceful.

Disliked The woods were not ideal for hammocks, we did find suitable enough trees but there really weren't many to choose from.

The Meadow primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Really enjoyed this campsite. You can see the neighboring horses form your pitch. There’s walks galore and a lot of nice local pubs (a little walk, but we managed 2 on Sunday afternoon - the fox (great roast) and the flower pit which was nice for a drink in the garden (but very busy). The campsite was chilled, well spaced out and had clean facilities. We will be back

The Meadow primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful camping areas. Staff extremely helpful when a tree blocked the road in the dark.

Disliked All toilets were urinal only, and there was no hot water for washing up. There was also a two night minimum stay which seemed completely unnecessary (and a problem, if you can't wash up or go to the toilet for 2 days!)

The Meadow primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Campsite was in the middle of rural fields. Shortish walk to pub, which served good food. Short walk to farm shop for coffee and croissants when couldn’t be bothered making breakfast in the rain! Spacious site with separation between pitches. Beautiful horses to look at in the next fields. Nice campsite man who was helpful.

The Meadow primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Tents and campers are spaced well apart and curfew is 9pm so there is no noise from fellow campers.
The toilets and sink area are kept clean and tidy.
Good walk from site to the excellent Fox pub.

Disliked It was a shame that the heatwave meant no fires or BBQS possible when we visited

Local attractions

That South Downs location means lots of scope for walks and bike rides in gorgeous scenery. If you don’t know where to start, perhaps head for popular spots like the Queen Elizabeth Country Park or Harting Down (both about a half-hour drive) or park in West Meon (10 minutes) for a walk on the 10-mile Meon Valley Trail. There are plenty of options for different days out too: literary fans may like to drop in at Jane Austen’s House (15 minutes), while those with more of a scientific outlook explore the exhibits at Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium (15 minutes). National Trust estates at Hinton Ampner (15 minutes) and Uppark (half an hour) are worth visiting as well. The exotic animals, activities and adventure playgrounds make Marwell Zoo (half an hour) a top pick for family outings, and there are plenty of interesting things to seek out in Winchester (20 minutes) too. For a more relaxed outing, maybe a steam-powered ride on the Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line (15 minutes) will fit the bill?
