Hillcrest Farm: Please do not feed me

General

  • Small pop-up site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Winchester; half an hour from Marwell Zoo
  • Spacious pitches on a working farm; campfire wood for sale

Hillcrest Farm is a small pop-up site in the splendid Hampshire countryside, just on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park about five minutes’ drive south of the village of Ropley.

If you’re after clubhouses, arcades and on-site entertainment you’ll want to look elsewhere: this site on a working farm is all about the fresh air, the rural peace and the lovely views. The folk that run the site have deliberately limited the number of pitches available in order to ensure plenty of space for everyone, and kept the amenities to just the essentials of toilets, showers and a washing-up area.

There’s a ‘leave no trace’ policy in place here, with guests all encouraged to do their bit to preserve the environment around them (and that stretches to being asked not to feed the farm’s horses, as much as they might bat their eyelashes at you in hope…) Campfires and barbecues are permitted but you’ll need to keep them in a suitable container off the ground; there’s wood available to buy on site from locally managed woodland.

Pick up supplies for your barbecue (or picnics while you’re out exploring the countryside) at the village store, or head to the bigger supermarkets in Winchester or Petersfield, both about 20 minutes’ drive away.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

There are no garbage cans onsite: all garbage will need to be taken home with you.

The campsite was lovely and quiet with gorgeous horses in the fields next to us. Jason gave us precise instructions on how to get to the campsite and where to pitch. The compost toilets and shower were lovely and clean, far nicer than many campsites I’ve been to. It was a bit fiddly to get the shower at the right temperature initially but easy once I knew how. This site was just perfect for an overnight stay with my 8 year old daughter.

    Disliked:

I think the site could do with a bit more signage showing where the toilets and showers are.

From the manager...

thanks for your comments and feedback. The shower is quite 'sensitive', but glad you got it working ok...you are also right about the signage...its on the list :) ...hope to see you again soon.. J

Fantastic rural location - not far from the M3 and with a feeling of being far from anywhere. Very green and tranquil with bird song and lots of wildlife. Plenty of space for dogs and walks nearby. The host was very helpful and attentive to needs. My daughter and I enjoyed our stay and will be back again. Thank you for a lovely stay.

I stayed here Hammock camping in the ancient forest with a friend and liked it so much I stayed a second night and brought my 8 year old son.

With acres of managed and Ancient woodland to roam you really can get lost and experience a truly wild camp.

The staff are very helpful but for those that just want to get lost and be left alone you cant ask for better, you can contact the staff via mobile and they visted once or twice to make sure we were ok, other than that it felt like we had the whole forest to ourselves.

Plenty of wild life which was a treat, if not a little noisey at times.

Both me and my boy really enjoyed just being able to go camping in a safe place without having to worrie about being moved on.

    Absolutly brilliant.

Beautiful campsite, lots of lovely trees, with a view of horses grazing in a nearby field. Water taps available, plus firewood you can buy.
Compost toilets were well maintained and comfortable.
J met us as we arrived and was really helpful and welcoming.
Lovely and quiet, no traffic to be heard, just birds and crickets.

    Disliked:

The shower itself was nice enough but the temperature was either freezing or boiling. Would be great to have a happy medium.

From the manager...

Thanks for your feedback and kind words, i'm glad that you were able to relax and enjoy the place. I'm sorry about the temporary shower, seems the controls are quite sensitive..we are having another (more traditional ) shower fitted within the next week, so hopefully that will help solve the issue... hope to see you all again soon..J

A beautiful back-to-basics site with friendly owners07/19/2021

We loved this site and can't wait to come again. Its the perfect back-to-basics site in fantastic countryside. We were welcomed by J who explained the site to us and told us the best spot for the evening sunshine. We found the compost loo's clean and not smelly at all!
The site is close to the coast so we travelled to Southsea for a day on the beach (45mins drive) and enjoyed the space and freedom back at the site to set up a small paddling pool for our two boys.
This site really is perfect if you're looking to escape and recharge. We spent the evenings watching bats dart about, listening to the owls and watching the stars (and satellites).
P.S. We think the best spot in the Wildflower Meadow is the one under the Oak tree, as you will have all the evening sunshine with shade, and you won't have anyone next to you on the far side.

    Disliked:

Nothing at all. Our only small feedback would be to have a few signs on the entrance driveway into the camping field as we drove right past it.

From the manager...

Thanks for your feed back, it was lovely to meet you and your family. I hope that you do come back again soon to explore even more of the surrounding area and countryside.. ps you're absolutely right about the signage.. thanks J
