Runway's End Outdoor Centre: Pods alongside footpath leading to games field

General

  • Peaceful site by Basingstoke Canal between Farnborough and Aldershot
  • A 15-minute drive from Birdworld, 45 minutes from Marwell Zoo
  • Secure site with facilities designed to be accessible for all guests

Safety, accessibility and activity are the watchwords for stays at Runway's End Outdoor Centre, a quiet Hampshire site next to the Basingstoke Canal between Farnborough and Aldershot (and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of either).

This is a place where parents can relax and let the nippers have a bit of freedom: the relatively compact site is entirely surrounded by fencing (with a key-coded access gate for added security) and kept car-free so there’s plenty of safe space to roam about a bit. There’s a spacious grass area for playing games, and various activities can be booked ahead (such as archery and climbing).

As well as being designed with utmost security in mind, this is a place that’s also been set up to be fully accessible. Showers, toilets and washing-up facilities are a short walk from the pods and pitches, and all amenities are linked by flat paths to make everything easy to get around.

And getting out is just straightforward: stroll or cycle out from the site onto the canal towpath and you can follow it for 32 miles along the water’s edge. The local area is also full of military history attractions and museums to visit, along with family-friendly attractions such as animal parks and an open-air pool. Junction 4 of the M3 is about 10 minutes’ drive from the site, so it’s easy to get down here from London, or head up for a day trip with a journey of around an hour by car (traffic permitting, of course).

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Enclosed, safe, forest setting; fire drums available & stumps for bbq04/11/2021

This was my third visit with my niece and nephew and this time we brought the grandparents. As ever, the staff were friendly, informative and kind, each making particular effort to say hello and welcome us back which was lovely. We love the woodland setting, the security fence (that's more me than the kids, and well absorbed into the forest view), the trolleys available to help with unpacking and the opportunity to buy firewood, build fire in the drums and use our BBQ (on the stumps). This year we also used our new tent and the tent pitches are great, each one feeling a bit like you're in your own little a little clearing in the woods (but not so much as to scare a 7 & 9 year old) (unless their grandpa jumps out of the pitch black wearing dark clothes and glow stick 'eyes' :/ Sounds funny, is actually terrifying).

The tent was much larger than we anticipated it would easily fit 5 large adults.
The pitch also was huge and so didn't feel crowded.
Facilities were good, the fridge was especially helpful to have and the toilets were generally clean and tidy and showers hot with good pressure.
The staff were so friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

I wish there was an option to book on to certain activities on site / more availability for these tasks.
By the time we booked our tent it was already fully booked which was a shame.

Everything! I went as a solo parent with my own 2yo daughter and siblings 12yo and 9yo. The staff were so lovely every step of the way and it felt safe at all times of the day and night. We went for a lovely stroll in the morning around the site and at the picnic table we played some games and had breakfast. The half day adventure came later and they loved that, the staff were just amazing at explaining and helping them get more and more confident with every try. I absolutely loved my time there and would go again in a heartbeat for longer!

    Disliked:

If I had to find anything (it’s hard to!) it would be that there are no routes out to walk to scenic places or the canal etc on, safely away from the roads. So we could only explore the site which had we been there for longer may have inhibited the walks we could go on. Also there are only bunk beds and not any double beds so with my 2yo it was a tight squeeze in a single bed as she didn’t want to sleep in her bunk!
