Runway's End Outdoor Centre: Large communal games field

General

  • Peaceful site by Basingstoke Canal between Farnborough and Aldershot
  • A 15-minute drive from Birdworld, 45 minutes from Marwell Zoo
  • Secure site with facilities designed to be accessible for all guests

Safety, accessibility and activity are the watchwords for stays at Runway's End Outdoor Centre, a quiet Hampshire site next to the Basingstoke Canal between Farnborough and Aldershot (and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of either).

This is a place where parents can relax and let the nippers have a bit of freedom: the relatively compact site is entirely surrounded by fencing (with a key-coded access gate for added security) and kept car-free so there’s plenty of safe space to roam about a bit. There’s a spacious grass area for playing games, and various activities can be booked ahead (such as archery and climbing).

As well as being designed with utmost security in mind, this is a place that’s also been set up to be fully accessible. Showers, toilets and washing-up facilities are a short walk from the pods and pitches, and all amenities are linked by flat paths to make everything easy to get around.

And getting out is just straightforward: stroll or cycle out from the site onto the canal towpath and you can follow it for 32 miles along the water’s edge. The local area is also full of military history attractions and museums to visit, along with family-friendly attractions such as animal parks and an open-air pool. Junction 4 of the M3 is about 10 minutes’ drive from the site, so it’s easy to get down here from London, or head up for a day trip with a journey of around an hour by car (traffic permitting, of course).

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

We adored the stay. A great night away from everyday life set in the beautiful countryside. We started our stay with some archery and abseiling. Annie was a wonderful host and guide during the activities and it was clear that she took health and safety very seriously which was reassuring. Kieron was also wonderful too with his welcome and answer to our many questions! The pods themselves were very quirky and comfortable. Bring your own bedding though! The alter fires are a great way to cook your food and packs of fire wood can be bought for £5.50 from the site. We had a wonderful walk long the canal which was stunning.

    Disliked:

The toilets were a little unclean but this would be due to users not placing their tissues etc into the bins. Not sure how many times they are cleaned but perhaps twice a day would be good.

Absolutely amazing! Great little pod village with a handful of pods. An alter fire is available for that freshly cooked breakfast in the morning. We thoroughly enjoyed our time. Don't hesitate..book! You can also book activities such as archery and abseiling which are such fun. Close to the canal for walks and stunning scenery.

    Disliked:

Toilets could have been a little cleaner but the standard was a lot better than some campsites we have stayed at.

The staff were very friendly, the location was easy to get to from London. The facilities were great, toilets/showers/washing up sinks and also shelters for cooking/eating if its raining!

The pods were clean and warm! Took a fitted sheet to cover the mattress which i read feom a prwvious review! Glad i did as the top of the mattress was plastic coated. Felt very safe within the grounds my children were mostly left free to roam. Kids aged 1, 6 and 7! The travel cot fit with plenty of space.

There were lots of activities but we didnt book onto any.

    Disliked:

Nothing in particular. Would have preferred to book an activity but didnt want to do the half day options which was too long. Also, the toilets were good and clean but the other visitors were not and often there was wee on the toilet seats, or unflushed toilets. A nice to have would be an end of evening toilet clean.

Excellent & plenty showers, toilets and washing up areas, even a large fridge to keep your food cold in. Large plot sizes and game field.
Fires allowed and large box of wood for a reasonable price which last an evening.
    Nice walks in the area.

    Disliked:

Bring mosquito repellent as is close to water and trees.
Activities were all booked up so recommend to do this in time. Not many groups running but maybe due to COVID restrictions

I stayed alone with my niece (7) and nephew (9) and each staff member, Chris, Kieran and Rachel (I hope!), were welcoming, cheerful, kind, helpful and understanding. Chris is great with my kids and making the activities safe, fun and informative, and Kieran went out of his way to help me with firewood, settling in and check out which was hugely appreciated. The campsite feels like it's in the woods but also incredibly safe as it has the surrounding (well blended) fence, and the canoeing was really fun, with beautiful scenery. We loved that we can BBQ safety and build fires in the drums to toast marshmallows (and use 'wizard fire'/neon flames!).
