Large communal games field

General

  • Peaceful site by Basingstoke Canal between Farnborough and Aldershot
  • A 15-minute drive from Birdworld, 45 minutes from Marwell Zoo
  • Secure site with facilities designed to be accessible for all guests

Safety, accessibility and activity are the watchwords for stays at Runway's End Outdoor Centre, a quiet Hampshire site next to the Basingstoke Canal between Farnborough and Aldershot (and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of either).

This is a place where parents can relax and let the nippers have a bit of freedom: the relatively compact site is entirely surrounded by fencing (with a key-coded access gate for added security) and kept car-free so there’s plenty of safe space to roam about a bit. There’s a spacious grass area for playing games, and various activities can be booked ahead (such as archery and climbing).

As well as being designed with utmost security in mind, this is a place that’s also been set up to be fully accessible. Showers, toilets and washing-up facilities are a short walk from the pods and pitches, and all amenities are linked by flat paths to make everything easy to get around.

And getting out is just straightforward: stroll or cycle out from the site onto the canal towpath and you can follow it for 32 miles along the water’s edge. The local area is also full of military history attractions and museums to visit, along with family-friendly attractions such as animal parks and an open-air pool. Junction 4 of the M3 is about 10 minutes’ drive from the site, so it’s easy to get down here from London, or head up for a day trip with a journey of around an hour by car (traffic permitting, of course).

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 6 or more people are not permitted.

Our stay was absolutely perfect. From our surprise early arrival Chris was kind, courteous, fun and informative. He and Jacob were then both exceptional during the archery and climbing session, maintaining safety to a high standard whilst being encouraging, patient and entertaining, with both the adults and kids. I was particularly appreciative of their attitude and understanding with my niece and nephew, and I noted that whenever my attention had to be drawn to one of them, Chris or Jacob were keeping an eye on and supporting the other (Thank you again!).

The site itself is absolutely lovely. The communal areas were clean, and, in fact, we saw them being deep cleaned the next day by Chris and 'Hagrid' who was also lovely to the kids, the luggage trolleys a great idea and I love that you can have fires and bbqs with the supplied safety equipment (fire drums available and tree stumps, I think, were around to elevate small bbqs). The site being fairly small, free of cars and encased by the wire fence (barely visable so doesn't spoil the feel) gave a great level of safety which, as a single adult with two kids, was fantastic and yet it feels like you're in the middle of the woods, surrounded by nature for miles.

Camping pods were brilliant for winter camping getaway, underfloor heating. Facilities were clean and tidy, staff were absolutely brilliant and professional, site was secure with key pad entry for guests, could walk on any direction and be in the woods or on the canal. Restricted activities but still had some really good half day ones to challenge kids and adults.

Excellent facilitys, clean and safe, and spacious.
Staff on duty were amazing! kind, courteous and extremley helpfull.not mentioning knowlageable and well clued in about the local wildlife and area.

We went on a particullary wet weekend (2 adults, 2 kids under 5), but this did not dampen the experience at all.
The Pods were warm and cosy, pleanty of space to rest and relax and dry out gear at the same time.

Of course due to Covid precautions many of the activities were closed but we will most definatly be returning in the near future, when hopefully these are back in the full swing. with so much to do on site alone, I will most deffinatly be recommending Runways End to anyone who asks me for campsites or short activity weekend breaks.

No Wi-fi, and phone receeption can be low at times, but i honestly see this as a plus in this day and age!

n.b Dont be like us and forget a sheet for under bed (we were in sleeping bags, but would have been an additional comfort bonus)

Lack of Covid-19 precautions. Didn't like the fact it says campfires are allowed but have to have it in a barrel 4ft off the ground, so you don't get much warmth.
Social distancing and rule of 6 was not adhered to nor was it enforced. Children and adults seemed ignorant to the fact there is a pandemic on. Also was told disinfect the showers after use. No cleaning materials provided...
