Setthorns Campsite: Entrance to the site

General

  • Hampshire family campsite near Sway in the New Forest National Park
  • Half an hour to Peppa Pig World; 20 minutes to National Motor Museum
  • Simple woodland pitches with access to marked walking trails

Sitting amid tall trees and dense greenery, Setthorns Campsite is pretty much completely hidden in the New Forest National Park. This Hampshire site isn't far from New Milton, but the pitches are so well concealed that it’s hard to know where the site ends and the forest begins.

Winding paths and trails loop through the woodland, branching off in all directions to spacious pitches. And with trees all around, it’s easy to take off on foot or by bike for your next adventure along way-marked woodland routes, or follow the disused railway line just minutes from the site.

Pitching a tent at Setthorns also puts you in pole position to spot all the New Forest wildlife, including free-roaming ponies and deer, rare wild birds and small mammals like rabbits and hares, as they go about their daily lives in the forest’s heathland and woodland.

Sway (five minutes’ drive) is the nearest village, with a couple of pubs as well as a small supermarket for stocking up on basics. Pretty-as-a-picture Brockenhurst (10 minutes) and medieval Lyndhurst (15 minutes) both have a plentiful selection of shops, restaurants and pubs. And quiet and peaceful it may be, this site is also close to popular family attractions such as Peppa Pig World and the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu.

It's very much worth noting that there are no shower or toilet facilities at this site, therefore your own chemical toilet facilities are essential.

This site is a member of Forestry England group.

Good hard pitches and site roads ideal this time of year for Motorhomes.

Pitches in discrete areas amongst the trees.

You really are in the heart of the New Forest with good walking or cycling tracks.

Walked to Sway one day and Brockenhurst another.

Only criticism no glass bottle recycling , paper cardboard ok just not bottles.

Great Weekend despite the rain showers.

    Disliked:

    No bottle recycling

    Disliked:

We fully understand that we get a fair bit of rain this time of year but the amount of holes in the access roads were excessive. Yes I understand this would be a continuous task to maintain but caravans bumping up and down continuously needs to be taken into consideration.
    Water pressure very poor!

I love Setthorns, this is the third time I’ve stayed and it was lovely that the man of duty recognised me and gave me a warning arrival. I was later than my pre arranged ETA and they gave me a telephone call to check I was still coming, thought that was thoughtful indeed. I stayed for 2 nights and I got to choose which pitch I wanted within an certain area.
Couple of top tips, little twigs/tiny bits of tree can fall on your motorhome/caravan if it’s very windy or raining, this can be quite loud in the middle of the night. My tip was to bring ear plugs, not needed if it’s not windy or strong rain but useful to prevent you being woken up. Other tip….WI-FI / mobile signal can be poor, make sure you’ve got some form of self entertainment. There is excellent TV signal.
The motorhome service point is useful but can get quite muddy in the rain. Very large size pitches that are well spread away for each other.
Overall excellent site if you like secluded, quiet and woodlands.

Peace & quiet. Very easy access to the New Forest, just walk away from your pitch. Pitches are natural, amongst the trees and nicely separated. Plenty of water points & bins. Close to Sway for a lovely walk & excellent dog friendly pub.

    Disliked:

The pitches are difficult to tell apart. Although they are numbered in small writing on small poles, there is no reference to those numbers on the site plan you are given nor mention of the one way system. This can be a bit confusing!

Local attractions

You’ll never run short of ideas when staying in the New Forest. Go horse riding, cycling (you can hire bikes locally too) or hiking in the woodland; try your hand at archery, bushcraft and combat games at New Forest Activities (20 minutes); or go wild on the waterslides at Romsey Rapids Sports Complex (half an hour, a good rainy day idea too).

For more cultural pursuits, have a nose around the Georgian docks and cottages at Bucklers Hard (25 minutes) on the Beaulieu River, or step back in time to the days of Henry VIII and take a ferry from Keyhaven to Hurst Castle (both 20 minutes) overlooking The Solent.

A must for petrolheads, the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum (10 minutes) has a vast collection of racing bikes, or you could take a tour of the vintage cars at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (20 minutes).

However, if kids are part of your holiday package, they’ll doubtless be clamouring to get to the myriad rides and attractions at Paultons Park, Home of Peppa Pig World (half an hour).

Must see

  • Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway (5.4 miles)
  • Highcliffe Castle (5.7 miles)
  • Beaulieu National Motor Museum (7.8 miles)

National Trust

  • The Needles Old Battery and New Battery (9.9 miles)
  • Newtown Old Town Hall (11.5 miles)
