Ocknell Caravan and Camping Site: Grass pitches

General

  • Family-friendly back to basics camping in the northern New Forest
  • In central Hampshire, half an hour's drive from Winchester/Salisbury
  • Peaceful pitches on the edge of a woodland with direct access to walks

For a full-on nature fix, head to the Hampshire countryside and settle down among the trees, ferns and free-roaming ponies at Ocknell Caravan and Camping Site. This peaceful site is in the north of the New Forest National Park and it’s a fabulous spot for unwinding amid gorgeous greenery.

The site's simple pitches are entirely surrounded by heath and woodlands, with direct access to walking trails that crisscross the countryside in all directions. You won't be staying on a perfectly maintained lawn (rock pegs are strongly recommended for tents), but this proximity to nature and wildlife will be a big plus for couples, families and friends looking for a back to basics getaway in stunning surroundings.

To make sure the impact on nature is minimal, facilities at Ocknell Caravan and Camping Site are limited – toilets are available, but there are no showers. Purpose-built barbecues (but not disposable ones or firepits) are allowed, but you'll need to keep them raised off the forest floor and don't light them anywhere other than on site to protect the forest landscape.

The site is a couple of miles' drive from the peaceful village of Fritham, home to an independent pub and plenty of options for walking and cycling. For independent shops and cafés, head into the New Forest’s unofficial ‘capital’ Lyndhurst (20 minutes’ drive), or for a supermarket haul head to Ringwood (15 minutes along the A31).

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Friendly staff. Well looked after site. Clean toilet and washing facilities. Over all great value for the price. There are a lot of nice secluded pitch sites you can use if you want to be on your own. You are not on top of each other like some sites. The site rangers seem to patrol regularly which is good to see. This was our second time here.
I would highly recommend the site.

Ground for tent pitches is very hard. We had to move tent to a totally different pitch as the pegs would only go in about an inch before hitting stones.

Stayed in new forest, not far from us. But loved the fact that we was able to get the kids and dogs away for just 1 night. Was cheap and was very clean, and spacious. The toilet block was very clean too.
We all loved it and will be back for more adventures.

Can pitch anywhere and it was lovely to have a private corner spot. Staff are lovely and very welcoming. Toilets clean. Can walk out to a vast open grassland with horses, donkeys, deer and cattle grazing - beautiful 🤗 Walk helped by the ice-cream van which was not far away 😉 Had a great stay- will be back 😀

    Disliked:

I would only say that the campsite is not close to any shops and the closest pub is about an hour walking distance away- obviously not a problem if you have everything you need 👍

Lovely campsite. Gates locked 22:30-7:30 (not mentioned when booking)06/06/2023

Beautiful nature. Wild horses and deer roam free. Plenty of space. Low impact camping. Nice, basic facilities.

    Disliked:

Gate locked at 10:30pm and reopens at 7:30am with no exceptions. No mention of this anywhere when booking or in any confirmation emails, but was told "all this info is available when booking" and "locking gates is normal" when I brought this up at check-in. This hampered our plans as we intended to check-in and pitch up in daylight before going to an event that ended at 11pm and a local car boot sale the next day at 6am (leaving our tent to come back to). Please add gate info Ocknell.
