  • Family-friendly back to basics camping in the northern New Forest
  • In central Hampshire, half an hour's drive from Winchester/Salisbury
  • Peaceful pitches on the edge of a woodland with direct access to walks
For a full-on nature fix, head to the Hampshire countryside and settle down among the trees, ferns and free-roaming ponies at Ocknell Caravan and Camping Site. This peaceful site is in the north of the New Forest National Park and it’s a fabulous spot for unwinding amid gorgeous greenery. The site's simple pitches are entirely surrounded by heath and woodlands, with direct access to walking trails that crisscross the countryside in all directions. You won't be staying on a perfectly maintained lawn (rock pegs are strongly recommended for tents), but this proximity to nature and wildlife will be a big plus for couples, families and friends looking for a back to basics getaway in stunning surroundings. To make sure the impact on nature is minimal, facilities at Ocknell Caravan and Camping Site are limited – toilets are available, but there are no showers. Purpose-built barbecues (but not disposable ones or firepits) are allowed, but you'll need to keep them raised off the forest floor and don't light them anywhere other than on site to protect the forest landscape. The site is a couple of miles' drive from the peaceful village of Fritham, home to an independent pub and plenty of options for walking and cycling. For independent shops and cafés, head into the New Forest’s unofficial ‘capital’ Lyndhurst (20 minutes’ drive), or for a supermarket haul head to Ringwood (15 minutes along the A31).

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The welcome when we arrived at Ocknell was extremely warm, welcoming and friendly. The site is spacious with plenty of room for pitches of all types and sizes. We loved the fact that the New Forest wildlife (ponies, cows, deer etc.) are free to wander in and out at their own leisure so you never know what to expect when you look outside. Access is very easy just off the A31. We went there with our grandchildren who loved being able to ride their bikes is safety along wide roadways. For us it was a perfect place to camp and have already recommended to friends and will continue to do so.

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely campsite in New Forest with basic but clean toilet and washing up facilities. Easy to pitch where you like. Bit of road noise from nearby main road but otherwise peaceful and relaxing. Easy walks directly from site. Few nice pubs short drive away.

Able to choose pitch

Disliked: Very rocky ground
Odd how have large toilet block with hot water but not put any showers in, even if then charged for using showers would be amazing.
