Morelands Copse Camping: Peaceful and scenic hut

General

  • Peaceful off-grid Hampshire site with South Downs views
  • Marwell Zoo 15 minutes' walk away; 15 minutes' drive to Winchester
  • Volunteer-run site with a charitable mission and well-preserved nature

Guests from all over the UK, Europe and the US have been to stay at Morelands Copse Camping – with many leaving rave reviews calling the place ‘magical’ or ‘pure heaven’. Several have even ended up staying for longer than they planned, or quickly returning…

So what is it about this place that inspires such enthusiasm? Well, the location’s a pretty good start – it has four acres of secluded and private Hampshire countryside to its name, with views over Hensting Valley and the South Downs National Park.

There’s a real emphasis on preserving natural habitats here – the grounds are made up of wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands, and the owners have planted nearly a kilometre of native hedgerow to create new wildlife habitats too. All of this provides an ever-changing backdrop of colour throughout the season, but one constant is the lack of light pollution that allows for some stunning stargazing on clear nights.

The site is off grid and low impact, but it does have some essential facilities including portaloos and a rather fun Wrigley tin shower with a bucket on a pulley for that real wild camping vibe. There’s also an honesty shop for wood, gas and a few other bits and bobs – other supplies can be picked up in either Eastleigh or Winchester, both of which are about 15 minutes’ drive away.

Alternatively, you might like to take a walk to one of the local pubs for a meal and a couple of drinks – there are two lovely options within 20 minutes’ stroll.

The cherry on top of all this? This site is run entirely by volunteers, with profits benefitting a charity for diabetic children in crisis – so you can be doing good while having a good time…

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Good experience, but very muddy in winter22/03/2023

    Nice place filled with nature.
The attention to make it quite unique.
    Ability to do a campfire.
    Very quiet in Winter

    Disliked:

It's very muddy in winter (be warned!)
The woodland pitches are nice, not big but enough for a tent for 2
Booking system a bit strange, maybe because of winter time?

1 toilet for the whole campsite: this may be busy!

Quiet out the way site, great walks, nice views and well kept. Porta-loo was very clean & stocked. Woods provided a lot of shelter from the wind & kept it a few degrees warmer than the surroundings. The hosts were very friendly. We were visited by a few Robins in the morning, heard Muntjack in the evenings along with the normal Pheasants & Owl calls you would expect. Considering the time of year we stayed there was not a lot of mud about, no wet ground to worry about etc. Would go again for sure, wild camping feel.

Nice walk through the woods & tracks up to The Ship, interesting pub built from timber for old British ships - local beer very good too.

    Disliked:

Not "Disliked" but more of "Would have made the stay easier but not essential"....We couldn't find any wood in the honesty shop but there was a local fuel station selling fair priced bags only 5 min down the road by car.

It was a little difficult to find the first time but I think that was more of a techincal fault as we never got the follow up email with the directios.

    Remote, away from the road.
Close to a nice pub with good food.

I added a log basket to our booking, the site didn't supply this even when asked over the phone with no solution offered or considdred a few weeks after still emailing one of the owners. Take your own fire wood, the site doesn't care what's on your booking they'll just take your money and not supply.

No email was sent prior to arrival from the site, when calling up to ask what pitch we were on it seemed they forgot they had a site let alone care about a booking or where we pitched up.

The woodland pitches are tiny and although they allow multiple tents per pitch you should plan for 1

I wonder if the summer is different, as it's currently out of season on an open all year site.

Local attractions

There’s a lot of fun to be had simply knocking about on site – the site is fenced so kids can play and dogs can sniff about safely. That said, this is also a great area for outings, and one of the best is very close by: the excellent Marwell Zoo, which you can reach with a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive for a day among the giraffes, tigers and hippos.

This location on the edge of the South Downs National Park also clearly lends itself to walks, bike rides and other outdoor activities – and there’s more of all that in the nearby New Forest National Park (20 minutes’ drive) too.

For a complete change of scenery, you might instead fancy city strolls in either historic Winchester (15 minutes) or down in Southampton (25 minutes), where both Solent Sky and SeaCity Museum are handy rainy-day options.

Must see

  • INTECH Science Centre & Planetarium (4.7 miles)
  • Winchester Cathedral (4.8 miles)
  • Southampton Maritime Museum (8.3 miles)

National Trust

  • Winchester City Mill (4.7 miles)
  • Hinton Ampner (7.1 miles)
