  • Peaceful off-grid Hampshire site with South Downs views
  • Marwell Zoo 15 minutes' walk away; 15 minutes' drive to Winchester
  • Four acres of countryside and natural habitats; bushcraft activities
Guests from all over the UK, Europe and the US have been to Morelands Copse Camping – with many leaving rave reviews calling the place ‘magical’ or ‘pure heaven’. Several have even ended up staying for longer than they planned, or quickly returning… So what is it about this place that inspires such enthusiasm? Well, the location’s a pretty good start – it has four acres of secluded and private Hampshire countryside to its name, with views over Hensting Valley and the South Downs National Park. Stunning sunsets are also common. There’s a real emphasis on preserving natural habitats here – the grounds are made up of an open field next to wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands, and nearly a kilometre of native hedgerows have been planted to create new wildlife habitats too. All of this provides an ever-changing backdrop of colour throughout the season, but one constant is the lack of light pollution that allows for some stunning stargazing on clear nights. The site is off grid and low impact, but it does have some essential facilities including portable toilets, a hot shower and an additional (and rather fun) Wrigley tin shower with a bucket on a pulley for that real wild camping vibe. There’s also an honesty shop for gas and a few other bits and bobs – other supplies can be picked up in either Eastleigh or Winchester, both of which are about 15 minutes’ drive away. A number of activities are available on site, including bushcraft (willow weaving, learning to build a den and foraging) and arts and crafts using the supplies and materials provided in the crafts den. Alternatively, you might like to take a walk to one of the local pubs for a meal and a couple of drinks – there are two lovely options within 20 minutes’ stroll. The closest bus stop is only 15 minutes' walk away too. For a spa day, head to the hotel in Marwell, which is five minutes' walk away.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: Overall really enjoyed staying here. A Simple site with nice touches. Peaceful site and nice to be able to go for walks direct from the site. Communal area in the woods good to hide from the weather and hang out. BBQ and fire pits provided.

Disliked: Zero arrival information or directions. There is a new toilet block but one was locked and the other was blocked/full up (not a proper loo, a camping porta potty) and couldn’t get the shower to work.

Liked: Fantastic site, it's just off grid enough fir me but still has a loo and shower. Great little honesty shop and Dan was on hand to lend me a bed when my pump didn't work. I've rebooked......with a hand pump. This will be a regular mid week break for me, fantastic

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch (woodland)

Liked: If you want proper "Off Grid" camping, this is perfect. Prior to arrival we got a text containing all the information we needed. Directions, contact information, site rules etc... When we arrived we were greeted by Dan who was really friendly, explained how it all worked, and as we'd booked a woodland pitch basically gave us free reign to camp in either one of the designated spots, or if we wanted to could basically camp anywhere we found a spot which is what we chose to do. Things like the honesty shop, communal kitchen and wheelbarrows to help you move your stuff were all really nice touches. Site was full of families but still very peaceful. We hardly saw anyone with the exception of Dan coming round to check we were settled in alright which again, was a nice touch without being overbearing. Toilets and showers were all nice and clean, although there don't seem to be as many as a site of that size will need during its peak - but it didn't affect our stay at all. Would have no issue staying here again, it was a nice chance for us to disconnect. Also... she said yes ;)

Bell tent

Liked: The secluded and rustic feel of the site was lovely. We stayed in the bell tent with our dog. Had everything we needed. Great pub just 20 min walk away.

Disliked: Directions to get there were a little confusing but we called the phone line provided and they were really helpful.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: It was a very chilled campsite with lots of space and nice for kids to run around.

Disliked: Finding the pitches was not easy and one portaloo was not enough for camping, it was too small, dirty and just not ideal at all. Luckily we had own toilet paper, but facilities were not sufficient for size of camping area. It was difficult to get water and keep clean! It said toilet block on pitch up but this isn't the case and if you want a clean toiler this isn't the place for you.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The view is nice.

Disliked: No directions were provided and the signposts are completely misleading if you are on the grass pitch. If you are camping on the grass pitch you actually have to stop at the sign that says "Morelands corpse camping keep going!" and let yourself through some big wooden black gates signed "Beware of the dogs" then cross a yard (totally unsigned) and up a track. It took us an hour of wondering around and asking people to find the place and no-one from the campsite answered their phone. All the other campers we spoke to had had the same problem, and one family had given up trying to find it and just pitched by the confusing "Moreland corpse camping, you're here!" sign. Hint if you're on the grass pitch and you see this sign you are in totally the wrong place! I've attached some photos to this review to hopefully help others in the same situation find where they're supposed to go. Also the grass pitch only has a single porta loo in the corner and there were soggy toilet rolls in there, one of which had mildew on it, so had clearly been wet for a while. A fair amount of the field is slopped also.

From the manager: Hi, We appreciate your feedback. However, I have to mention that we do have three toilets located throughout the site, they are not all in one immediate area to lower impact on the ground and site. The campers at the top as mentioned had requested to camp in this spot. I completely agree the signage is not great this is work in progress however, we have many hurdles to cross to allow us permissions to place so we do the best we can at present.

Quiet, peaceful setting ideal for an away from it all break.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The setting is marvellous and the amount of wildlife is impressive. The woodland, open fields and nearby ponds give a really quiet and peaceful feel.

Disliked: Facilities are distinctly limited and quickly overwhelmed when particularly busy.

Local attractions

There’s a lot of fun to be had simply knocking about on site – the site is fenced so kids can play and dogs can sniff about safely. That said, this is also a great area for outings, and one of the best is very close by: the excellent Marwell Zoo, which you can reach with a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive for a day among the giraffes, tigers and hippos. This location on the edge of the South Downs National Park also clearly lends itself to walks, bike rides and other outdoor activities – and there’s more of all that in the nearby New Forest National Park (20 minutes’ drive) too. For a complete change of scenery, you might instead fancy city strolls in either historic Winchester (15 minutes) or down in Southampton (25 minutes), where both Solent Sky and SeaCity Museum are handy rainy-day options.
