  • Peaceful off-grid Hampshire site with South Downs views
  • Marwell Zoo 15 minutes' walk away; 15 minutes' drive to Winchester
  • Four acres of countryside and natural habitats; bushcraft activities
Guests from all over the UK, Europe and the US have been to Morelands Copse Camping – with many leaving rave reviews calling the place ‘magical’ or ‘pure heaven’. Several have even ended up staying for longer than they planned, or quickly returning… So what is it about this place that inspires such enthusiasm? Well, the location’s a pretty good start – it has four acres of secluded and private Hampshire countryside to its name, with views over Hensting Valley and the South Downs National Park. Stunning sunsets are also common. There’s a real emphasis on preserving natural habitats here – the grounds are made up of an open field next to wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands, and nearly a kilometre of native hedgerows have been planted to create new wildlife habitats too. All of this provides an ever-changing backdrop of colour throughout the season, but one constant is the lack of light pollution that allows for some stunning stargazing on clear nights. The site is off grid and low impact, but it does have some essential facilities including portable toilets, a hot shower and an additional (and rather fun) Wrigley tin shower with a bucket on a pulley for that real wild camping vibe. There’s also an honesty shop for gas and a few other bits and bobs – other supplies can be picked up in either Eastleigh or Winchester, both of which are about 15 minutes’ drive away. A number of activities are available on site, including bushcraft (willow weaving, learning to build a den and foraging) and arts and crafts using the supplies and materials provided in the crafts den. Alternatively, you might like to take a walk to one of the local pubs for a meal and a couple of drinks – there are two lovely options within 20 minutes’ stroll. The closest bus stop is only 15 minutes' walk away too. For a spa day, head to the hotel in Marwell, which is five minutes' walk away.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We enjoyed the quirkiness of the site and it was ideal for small children as they had the chickens and bunnies to attract them. It was reasonably priced considering it was school holidays. The staff were friendly enough and bought us wood when we requested it. Close to a lovely pub on a lake.

Disliked The chemical toilets were awful and by the end of our 2 day stay were stinking horribly. The only compost toilet was slightly better but I feel for an off grid campsite there should have been more. 2 or 3 at least. There was only one shower as well for more than 50 people and the site wasn’t even full.
Finally there is no shade on the main site and it was a hot weekend so I would recommend bringing a shade umbrella or gazebo as it gets quite hot in the tents.

From the manager: Hi,

We do apologise about our toilets this weekend unfortunately our cleaning company did not show due to issues otherwise everything would have been perfectly fine.

Our site is low key and we were at full capacity so it was not ideal timing but these things happen.

Kind regards

Dan

George's shepherd's hut (woodland)

Liked Location and grounds.

Disliked A bit too rustic for our liking. Didn’t feel very private with George’s Hit bring right next to communal kitchen and cut through for toilets etc.

George's shepherd's hut (woodland)

Liked Everything! Absolutely incredible!
Stayed in Georges cabin and it was magical! Also run by such lovely people, would highly recommend and definitely will be back with family and friends.

Disliked I mean the only downside was the lack of power on site so just plan ahead better than me…. (Very spontaneous last minute trip) and bring a powerbank or some additional lighting. Saying that it was quite lovely for out phone batteries to die and get lost in eachothers company!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Animals present on site such as the rabbits, pigs and free range chickens. The site manager helped the kids stroke the chickens.
Relatively secluded and not a busy site, felt like a safe location.
Some outdoor games available such as rackets, water guns and football nets (bring your own ball).
Could see that there was options for booking axe throwing and other bushcraft activities.
There was an honesty shop on site for bug repellent, logs and other basic camping conveniences.
Hot water shower available, composting toilet and porta loo options.

Disliked Had a bit of trouble with water taps having supply off at intervals on our last morning there. Site manager was able to fix this easily though.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked Such a wonderful experience, went with a group of NCT friends and our kids. The field is fenced in, so the kids were penned in and could safely run around enjoying the freedom and loving the bell tents. Portaloo's were the cleanest I'd seen, chickens roaming around, the staff were really lovely and friendly and helped us put up our sun sails for some shade in the heat.

Shower was warm, honesty shop for gas and wood plus other treats. The owner runs a low key wood fired pizza offering in the evenings which was handy, pub about a 20 minute walk away as well.

Would definitely recommend!

Disliked Can't actually think of anything I disliked!

Local attractions

There’s a lot of fun to be had simply knocking about on site – the site is fenced so kids can play and dogs can sniff about safely. That said, this is also a great area for outings, and one of the best is very close by: the excellent Marwell Zoo, which you can reach with a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive for a day among the giraffes, tigers and hippos. This location on the edge of the South Downs National Park also clearly lends itself to walks, bike rides and other outdoor activities – and there’s more of all that in the nearby New Forest National Park (20 minutes’ drive) too. For a complete change of scenery, you might instead fancy city strolls in either historic Winchester (15 minutes) or down in Southampton (25 minutes), where both Solent Sky and SeaCity Museum are handy rainy-day options.
