Hurstwood Farm: One of the pods

General

  • Off-grid Sussex site in the grounds of an 80-acre equestrian centre
  • In High Weald, 15 minutes' drive from Crowborough and 30 from Lewes
  • Firepits for hire; popular pub half a mile away

Those seeking peace, horses and a welcoming place for their canine pals are set to have a grand time of it at Hurstwood Farm, a calm farm spot at the southern end of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that’s set half a mile back from the nearest road. The site is also home to a popular riding centre and is within easy reach of a network of car-free trails and bridleways where you can roam on foot or in the saddle (riding must be booked in advance and is not suitable for beginners).

It's also a lovingly-managed wildlife haven – the perimeter of each field here has a wild strip that's been totally left to nature, while the hedges are cut only every three to four years to enable birds to settle down and raise their young. Deer can frequently be seen prancing through Hurstwood Farm's 20 acres of wild woodland, so keep your eyes peeled for roe, fallow and muntjac species.

Facilities here include toilets, hot showers and a washing-up corner. Seasonal local produce is sold, as is wood for the firepits that can be hired on site (please don't bring your own firepit).

It's half a mile from here to the nearest pub, a popular joint that the site owners heartily recommend. Provisions for self-catered meals can be picked up at one of the supermarkets in Crowborough (15 minutes' drive), where there's also a leisure centre.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Owing to government regulations, groups of 6 or more people are not permitted.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Very peaceful and quiet. Amy was really helpful and accommodating. Facilities were clean and functional. Ability to explore surrounding fields/forest area as well as pond kept the kids and us happy. Also Amy put us in touch with the equestrian centre so my daughter had a riding lesson which finished the weekend off really well. Would definitely visit again as it feels entirely off the beaten track. Great for some relaxing down time.

The surroundings are beautiful, woodland, horses and a peaceful site to camp with clean facilities

    Disliked:

Having to pay an extortionate £15 for a bag of tiny logs for the fire pit that you have to pay £10 to use. No option to bring your own logs, signs to say not allowed. It's things like this that leave you feeling unhappy. If I'd bought another bag of logs, the cost of the fire pit and the logs would have almost matched the cost to camp there!!

Local attractions

Country capers of all descriptions can be had around here, from golf at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club (10 minutes' drive) to fishing and cycling at Bewl Water (40 minutes). Those of you handy with a rod and reel can also try out night fishing in nearby Scaland Wood (10 minutes) – there's much to be said for returning to stroll through the forest when you've got the light to appreciate it, too.

Craving something more urban and bohemian? Stop in Brighton (45 minutes) for window-shopping, veggie food and artsy stalls in North Laine or just some beachfront promenading. Though overshadowed by its bigger cousin on the coast, Lewes (30 minutes) also has a lot going for it: Sussex's county town has a splendid Norman castle, views over surrounding chalk cliffs and brims with ace independent shops.

Tiddlers in your travel tribe, meanwhile, can kid around at Phileas Fogg's World of Adventures (40 minutes), swing through the trees at Branching Out Adventures (20 minutes) or be taken for smokey, steam-powered rides on the Bluebell Railway (20 minutes).
