Hurstwood Farm: Grassy vistas

General

  • Peaceful Sussex site in the grounds of an 80-acre equestrian centre
  • In High Weald, 15 minutes' drive from Crowborough and 30 from Lewes
  • Firepits for hire; popular pub half a mile away

Those seeking peace, horses and a welcoming place for their canine pals are set to have a grand time of it at Hurstwood Farm, a calm farm spot at the southern end of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that’s set half a mile back from the nearest road. The site is also home to a popular riding centre and is within easy reach of a network of car-free trails and bridleways where you can roam on foot or in the saddle (riding must be booked in advance and is not suitable for beginners).

It's also a lovingly-managed wildlife haven – the perimeter of each field here has a wild strip that's been totally left to nature, while the hedges are cut only every three to four years to enable birds to settle down and raise their young. Deer can frequently be seen prancing through Hurstwood Farm's 20 acres of wild woodland, so keep your eyes peeled for roe, fallow and muntjac species.

Facilities here include toilets, hot showers and a washing-up corner. Seasonal local produce is sold, as is wood for the firepits that can be hired on site (please don't bring your own firepit).

It's half a mile from here to the nearest pub, a popular joint that the site owners heartily recommend. Provisions for self-catered meals can be picked up at one of the supermarkets in Crowborough (15 minutes' drive), where there's also a leisure centre.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Owing to government regulations, groups of 6 or more people are not permitted.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

We were lucky enough to have the tent pitches to ourselves which was amazing! The site is remote so very peaceful with amazing countryside surroundings. Amy was so helpful with any questions we had too.

    Disliked:

There is only one toilet which was fine as there were limited numbers for our stay but if the site was full I would worry this isn’t enough!

    Very clean showers and w/c.

    Disliked:

Not clear about who to give exact arrival time to.
    Chap a bit grumpy.

From the manager...

We do ask people to give a time of arrival as there is someone on the farm waiting to transport guests to campsite. When people ignore the eta times and arrive a few hours after their estimated time of arrival with no communication, this causes many problems and frustrations for a busy farm. We do try our very best to make everyone's stay run as smoothly as possible.

A wonderfully peaceful site. We were the only tent pitched for the two nights we were there. You leave your car in the stable yard and they transport you to the pitch with all your belongings in a buggy. This means no cars in and around the site so very safe and peaceful. Make sure you remember everything in the first run as it is a 10-15 minute walk back to the car if you need anything. It didn't bother us at all but if you are not so mobile then maybe it could be an issue.

The facilities of showers, compost toilet and washing up room were absolutely spotless and lovely hot water for showering and washing up.

A suggestion would be to have a small freezer in the kitchen area so you can re-freeze ice packs if you are staying more than one night. There is no power available at all if you need to recharge anything. Not a complaint - just a suggestion..

The staff are very friendly and helpful and the site is really peaceful. Toilet, shower and washing up facilities were really good and we were happily surprised just how nice and clean they were.
The site is a good size, our neighbours were close enough to wave a say hello to, but far enough away that we weren't disturbed by anyone else using the site.
You can hire a firepit and buy firewood from the site. They also offer hampers of food which I thought was a nice option, however we didn't take advantage of that because we were away exploring alot of the time.
There's a cute little village pub within walking distance and a Wetherspoons about a 5 minute drive away, in the village.
We took a drive South to spend the day at Brighton beach which is about 30-45 minutes drive away.
My partner loved seeing the horses and waking up to the birdsong in the morning.
The site is child friendly and the young children were playing on the novel horses jumps scattered throughout the grounds.
The site is also dog friendly for those who own a dog and the wide open space certainly provides plenty of room to play.
I have already recommended this site to my friends and family, and I would definitely stay here again in the future.

    Disliked:

There is a slight slope to the site, which isn't so bad, until you try to pitch a level tent or sit in a camping chair, but neither of us rolled out the tent and down the hill so it couldn't be that bad

Local attractions

Country capers of all descriptions can be had around here, from golf at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club (10 minutes' drive) to fishing and cycling at Bewl Water (40 minutes). Those of you handy with a rod and reel can also try out night fishing in nearby Scaland Wood (10 minutes) – there's much to be said for returning to stroll through the forest when you've got the light to appreciate it, too.

Craving something more urban and bohemian? Stop in Brighton (45 minutes) for window-shopping, veggie food and artsy stalls in North Laine or just some beachfront promenading. Though overshadowed by its bigger cousin on the coast, Lewes (30 minutes) also has a lot going for it: Sussex's county town has a splendid Norman castle, views over surrounding chalk cliffs and brims with ace independent shops.

Tiddlers in your travel tribe, meanwhile, can kid around at Phileas Fogg's World of Adventures (40 minutes), swing through the trees at Branching Out Adventures (20 minutes) or be taken for smokey, steam-powered rides on the Bluebell Railway (20 minutes).

  • Sheffield Park Garden (9.3 kilometres)
  • Bluebell Railway (9.5 kilometres)
