Peaceful grass pitches

  • Peaceful back-to-basics rural site in the village of Telscombe
  • Just off the South Downs Way and 30 minutes' walk to the beach
  • Organic meat and free-range eggs available to buy from the farm
‘The Downs… too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’ Thus sighed author (and former local resident) Virginia Woolf in her diary back in 1937. Little has changed around here in the intervening years – if you’d like to look for yourself, settle in at Stud Farm, just outside Telscombe in the South Downs National Park. And what views they are from here – a patchwork of woods and farmland tumbling down to the south coast. There aren’t any marked pitches so just pick your spot and commence the fine activity of staring out to sea. Campfires directly on the ground aren’t permitted but you can hire a firepit or barbecue for warmth and eats. Crank your evening’s gawping up a notch or two with an alfresco feast direct from the farm, which can supply tasty treats for your grill, including home-reared pork and lamb. Marshmallows (not home-reared but still essential firepit fodder) are available for dessert. While you’re there, pick up one of their breakfast hampers so you can get your morning off to a champion start with bangers and free-range eggs. Facilities are kept basic here to maintain the site’s peaceful vibe – you’ll have access to toilets, a couple of showers and drinking water. If you’d like to immerse yourself in water it’s a half-hour stroll down to the nearest beach, where you can launch yourself into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Stunning view, simple check in, gorgeous walk over the Downs into Bristol. Clean toilets and showers.

Disliked Didn't dislike anything but just to be aware it's a basic set up as described with very simple toilets and outside washing up area.

From the manager: thank you for you feedback.
glad you enjoyed your stay and the many lovely walks.
yes it is a simple basic campsite, but if we was to develop it into a holiday park in my personal opinion would spoil the natural beauty and wildlife which many of our visitors really enjoy.
many thanks

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great views! Clean toilet blocks and the main lady was regularly available during the day for requests like extra fire wood or ordering some of their really tasty meats (recommended to do both in advance). Nice walk down to the local pub through the fields. The kids loved visiting the sheep in the field next door too.

Disliked Site was very exposed to the wind (which is what you'd expect at the top of a hill by the sea!) so recommend checking the weather forecast - not a criticism of the site at all, just something to plan for.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: thank you for your feedback, which is valuable to us.
it does state on our web site that we are exposed to the elements to help people make an informed decision if to visit or not, we can get strong winds occasionally.
unfortunately even if we did the signs in neon lights - some people would still not read them, we have had suggestions that we have too many signs, where do we draw the line.
if there are a lot of people using the facilities at the same time then this does create low pressure at the shower, we are looking into improving this, ideas welcome.

many thanks

Liked Really simple to just turn up, find your pitch and get on with life!
One of the staff will be round to check you have what you need and know what you're doing!
Great views over peacehaven and beyond to the seven sisters east and the offshore wind farm to the west!
Facilities clean and sufficient.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked The downs. The hot showers. The basic but excellent facilities. The walk straight out the campsite down to the sea. The silence at night. Stud Farm is a stunner!

Disliked Ground a tad tough to camp on after a hot dry summer, but that couldn’t be helped.

From the manager: thank you for your feedback.
everyone loves the views of the Downs and the Sea from this site,
i like to think that people do come for the peace and quiet which i know many people appreciate, which is why there is a site rule that there is no music allowed after 9pm.
yes the ground is a bit tough in places, but if tent pegs are in the ground at 45 degrees which is usually 90 degrees to the guide rope/line then it is a lot easier to get your pegs in with good hold.
many thanks

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Amazing views, staff and facilities. The owner would often patrol and meet new comers and check in on campers to make sure everyone was happy. Large pitches and great value for money. Also very easy to find with great walking paths, shops and beaches close by

Local attractions

To see more of those views, get your boots on and head out onto the South Downs Way, which passes very close by. Hardy souls can tackle the route’s full 100-mile length, while casual ramblers can choose a shorter section. A popular attraction along the route is the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, a tall lad indeed at 72 metres. It’s a four-hour walk to see him, or you could drive there in around half an hour. Heading south, a 15-minute walk takes you down to the coast path, where you can continue your stroll to the stretch of shingle at Saltdean. The pier, beach and historic buildings of Brighton are around a half-hour drive away. If you’re feeling particularly active you can walk there in around two hours and then hire a kayak or paddleboard to take to the sea. If you’d like to see the place that inspired Virginia Woolf to wax lyrical about the area, visit her country retreat, Monk’s House, an hour’s walk from the site. There are family-friendly attractions galore around here, too – it'll take you around half an hour to drive to the steam-powered Bluebell Railway, or to Drusillas Park.
