  • Peaceful back-to-basics rural site in the village of Telscombe
  • Just off the South Downs Way and 30 minutes' walk to the beach
  • Organic meat and free-range eggs available to buy from the farm
‘The Downs… too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’ Thus sighed author (and former local resident) Virginia Woolf in her diary back in 1937. Little has changed around here in the intervening years – if you’d like to look for yourself, settle in at Stud Farm, just outside Telscombe in the South Downs National Park. And what views they are from here – a patchwork of woods and farmland tumbling down to the south coast. There aren’t any marked pitches so just pick your spot and commence the fine activity of staring out to sea. Campfires directly on the ground aren’t permitted but you can hire a firepit or barbecue for warmth and eats. Crank your evening’s gawping up a notch or two with an alfresco feast direct from the farm, which can supply tasty treats for your grill, including home-reared pork and lamb. Marshmallows (not home-reared but still essential firepit fodder) are available for dessert. While you’re there, pick up one of their breakfast hampers so you can get your morning off to a champion start with bangers and free-range eggs. Facilities are kept basic here to maintain the site’s peaceful vibe – you’ll have access to toilets, a couple of showers and drinking water. If you’d like to immerse yourself in water it’s a half-hour stroll down to the nearest beach, where you can launch yourself into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Campsite was clean and staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I arrived ahead on my own and had to struggle with the giant tent they helped me out. They cared a lot about everyone staying and the upkeep of the space.
The views were beautiful and it was a lovely calm quite space to spend a few nights.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Cheap with beautiful scenary. Facilities were clean but basic.

Disliked Very low power shower. Wouldn't want to be a girl who needed to wash my hair...

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: we do welcome all feedback, good or indifferent.
we have never stated or had a power shower and have a clear open policy on the website which states that we are on top of the Downs and we occasionally suffer from low water pressure so that customers can make their own decision whether to visit or not.
we are making improvements and the toilets are now on a separate system which does help the shower.

Worth every penny for the fabulous view!

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very spacious campsite, with clean sanitary block. Only criticism: flow of water to handbasins was very small, and not hot on first morning (later rectified) Lovely views, and excellent grass surface, comfortable to walk on.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your feedback our pitches are very spacious over 10mts x 10mts,
with the low flow of the water, we have made improvements to the water system so that the pressure doesn't drop as much when other customers are using the facilities at the same time.

hope you would like to come again soon

Best Regards

Hayley

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Pretty views

Disliked Unfortunately our stay at stud farm was unpleasant.

The main road in was closed, the couple running the couple running the campsite were unable to give us directions.

There was a large group who had many children, these children ran riot over the campsite, balls hit multiple tents and everyones pitches. The couple running the campsite were onsite and didn't deal with the issue.

We were also cherrily told by the couple running the site, they were overbooking booking the campsite. There were a lot more pitches then meant to be on the site. This meant that using the toilet and shower facilities became impossible.

The finally straw was when we finally explored new haven, we came back to find a whole in our tent and our dog food eaten. The farmers dog had destroyed our tent.

We had a horrible time at stud farm, and actually left the campsite early. We will never return.

The couple running the site were nice but were not up to the task. The campsite may as well been unmanned.

From the manager: thank you for your feedback as it is valuable to us.
Pidding hoe rd was closed as there was an accident with fatalities, as soon as i was aware of this i actually took a drive out to see how long the blockage would be which i was told by the police that it would be a couple of hours, everyone that phoned i gave alternative directions with everyone else having no problems with them.

we didn't see any problems with the children playing their games and didn't witness any part of their toys bothering any ones tents, no one had any complaints, If this customer had problems then i really don't understand why they didn't ring us as I know they had our number, if we had received a complaint we would have delt with it appropriately.

They are mistaken about being overbooked, as i know we wasn't, and we would never ever overbook the campsite. we have a clear open policy on our site that does state we can occasionally suffer with low water pressure during busy periods, and certainly didn't state that it was impossible to use the toilet block.

we are very sorry that the tent was damaged by a dog and apologized to the customer as of course this should not happen, if we could have repaired it we would have, but the damage was too large for us to deal with, we also stated that the camping shop could help which is on the notice board.

we suggested that they e-mail us for a free of charge stay and that i would contact our manager to see if we can do anything more to compensate them.

this was an unfortunate incident of a dog which had managed to escape their owners of which we had no control over, we are not trying to justify anything as of course this should not happen but we did what we could to help and compensate them.

we welcome all feedback good or bad as we do use it to improve our site as much as possible.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Absolutely fantastic wee campsite. This place was perfect for our family of 7 before we sailed in the morning to Dieppe. After a very hectic journey travelling from Dundee with unexpected car problems we arrived to no more problems. I contacted the team via email to let them know our late ETA of 0030, with no hassles and no problems. Facilities were clean, exactly what we needed and set on a beautiful piece of land. 15 minute drive to ferry port, we even had time to fly into Aldi which was literally by the port to stock up for our Ferry.
Highly recommended place to stay for any traveller with close access to port. A no problem stay is exactly what we needed after a very, long problematic journey! This is our spot now for all future stays when travelling Europe! I can only wish other places out there like you exist. On the way home we stayed at the Cotswold Campsite in Chipping Norton. Never again. Thank you for really thinking and catering to our needs!

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Absolutely fantastic site!! Very hygienic toilet and cleaning facilities. Staff on site couldn't do more to provide a better experience for my fiancé and I. Will definitely be returning with the whole family!!

Disliked Nothing in particular, water pressure only dropped once while washing my hands, but it was expected as the site is on high grounds. But definitely not a deal breaker.

Local attractions

To see more of those views, get your boots on and head out onto the South Downs Way, which passes very close by. Hardy souls can tackle the route’s full 100-mile length, while casual ramblers can choose a shorter section. A popular attraction along the route is the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, a tall lad indeed at 72 metres. It’s a four-hour walk to see him, or you could drive there in around half an hour. Heading south, a 15-minute walk takes you down to the coast path, where you can continue your stroll to the stretch of shingle at Saltdean. The pier, beach and historic buildings of Brighton are around a half-hour drive away. If you’re feeling particularly active you can walk there in around two hours and then hire a kayak or paddleboard to take to the sea. If you’d like to see the place that inspired Virginia Woolf to wax lyrical about the area, visit her country retreat, Monk’s House, an hour’s walk from the site. There are family-friendly attractions galore around here, too – it'll take you around half an hour to drive to the steam-powered Bluebell Railway, or to Drusillas Park.
