General

  • Scenic rural location on a 160-acre working farm
  • Twenty minutes' drive from both Blackpool and Lancaster
  • Forest of Bowland and Beacon Fell Country Park within ten miles

You'll find reasons aplenty why this park is proving pretty popular with those seeking to pitch up in the north west: its position is perfect, its vibe relaxed, and its team very friendly indeed.

Poplar Grove Farm Caravan Park is a 160-acre working family farm, just 12 miles from Blackpool for those who like illuminating hols, and halfway between Lancaster and Preston for city sightseers. Even closer (and filled with pubs and restaurants), the old market town of Garstang is a couple of miles away, lying on the River Wyre: we spy river fishing opps…

And for hikers, bikers and scenic view seekers, the unspoiled countryside of the Forest of Bowland and vistas of the Bowland Fells can be reached within 11 miles – or take yourself out into the surrounding Lancashire countryside: miles of walks and bike trails are all around.

All guests have access to a modern toilet block with two showers and two toilets for both ladies and gents. The site also has a chemical disposal point.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The whole experience was excellent. The pods were fantastic. The heating was on in the pod when we arrived, the camp site was clean and the owners were very welcoming. There was complementary tea and coffee provided, a kettle and toaster, a mini fridge and heater and also a fire pit. We would definitely come back!

    A good TV signal.

    Disliked:

This site is very run down and lacked any care and attention.

    - Owner never introduced themselves to me, despite saying she would (I was there for 6 days - I assume it was the girl with the silver pick-up which had a pair of balls hanging from its tow bar!)
    - The bins were overflowing with rubbish for nearly 6 days and all the rubbish was dumped around the bin, which was a complete eyesore as this was next to the toilets
    - Site was covered in litter, and none of it was picked up in the week I was there. (I appreciate this is not the owners litter but shows the lack of care and attention on the site)
    - The toilets were awful, toilet roll was on the floor for 3 days and not picked up. The toilet seats were also loose. Showers were dirty and covered in grime.
    - The site roads were covered in deep potholes, everywhere

I read the the reviews from previous holidaymakers and its obviously a completely different site in the summer. Nonetheless, the general state of uncleanliness is unacceptable, so much so we left early from our break. Avoid.

Local attractions

Garstang (the world's first Fairtrade Town, food fact fans) is a few minutes' drive or two miles' walk from Poplar Grove and comes with seven pubs and three restaurants; have a duke too at the ruins of fifteenth century Greenhaugh Castle overlooking the town.

The village of Scorton three miles from base has a pub, garden centre, café, and restaurant: if you're around during the May bank holiday, roll along to the Bike and Barrows Festival and the Scorton Music Festival for wheelbarrow racing, sheep racing and other shenanigans.

To the east of Garstang, the old hunting ground of the Forest of Bowland is now an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty landscaped by moorland, fells and valleys, with endless opps for walking, cycling, fell running and wildlife watching (not all at once, and look out for the hen harriers). The Bowland Visitor Centre, with info on the area's activities and events, is in Beacon Fell Country Park.

Twenty minutes' drive will land you at either Blackpool (south-east) or Lancashire's county town of Lancaster (north), with a fair good time to be had at the former and a load of historical sightseeing available at the latter. Preston is about 25 minutes to the south.

To investigate a bit further afield, the watery wonders of the Lake District are about an hour's drive away.

Must see
