  • Family-owned park on the banks of the River Wyre
  • Carefully landscaped wildlife haven with over 5000 trees
  • Four well-stocked and well-maintained fishing ponds
If you're a sucker for a place with a bit of family heritage, have a look at Claylands Caravan Park. The Robinsons have owned Claylands for more than 50 years, when it was a simple 14-acre farm; since then, it’s been transformed into a landscaped holiday park, while keeping an edge of wilderness. This lush place is on the banks of the River Wyre, surrounded by more than 5000 indigenous trees and in a haven for wildlife and birdwatching: look out for squirrels, foxes, deer, rabbits and around 85 different species of bird. On site are carefully pruned hedges, shrubs and trees, loads of green space, and excellent amenities including a modern shower and toilet block, a laundry room, and drinking water taps and waste water disposal points all around. Anglers will be well chuffed with the four well-stocked and well-maintained fishing ponds, abundant with roach, carp and tench: to be in with your fishing chance, arrive with your kit and the appropriate licence, and pick up a day ticket from the family team. Other facilities on site include a handy shop for the essentials, as well as a kids' adventure playground swish enough to make grownups green with envy. Light snacks and homemade meals can be had at Stepping Stones Riverside Bar and Restaurant, just adjacent to the park (open Tuesday-Sunday all year round), which has a takeaway service, pretty views from inside the restaurant and a spacious garden for dining outside.

What customers say

Visitors praise Claylands for its immaculate grounds, clean and warm facilities, and friendly, helpful staff. The on-site restaurant and bar are frequently highlighted. Some guests note the distance to toilet blocks from certain pitches and occasional noise from nearby roads and trains. Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Excellent site, very close to M6 so convenient stop off on long drives. Very pleasant and helpful staff, well maintained site. Bus stop at the end of the lane means that you can leave your vehicle behind.
As it is so close to M6 the sound evident but only background noise and not intrusive.
WiFi was a bit variable but not a major issue.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The park for the children was fantastic. The fishing lakes were a success with my children (although their bags did come back full of dog poo). Spacious area for camping, lots of lovely wildlife around.

Disliked The toilet block being so far from tent area. I feel they could be closer to those camping instead of near the caravans!
The noise at night, the noise from the electric pylons. The noise from the train line. I know it can’t be helped but did cause us to leave early, along with the dog poo mess!

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The site was really clean and well kept. The facilities were immaculate every time we went. The park is right next tent pitches which was perfect for us with the kids. The location is great for nipping out with the kids, wallings, billy bobs, Morecambe, Blackpool. Also strongly recommend the stepping stones on site. The staff were extremely accommodating and the food was great.

From the manager: Thank you for leaving your review. We are sorry there were some aspects not to your liking. With reference to the train line which is two fields away, it is the mainline between London and Scotland and was here long before we were. At different times of the year we have various steam trains including the Flying Scotsman go past which most people love to see.
You are correct when the tenting field is full , all 12 pitches can interrupt the view at certain spots but are well spaced. Your own pitch has hard standing gravel for your unit and then the same size of grassed space at the side for your use totalling 8x8 meters.
The shower block is away from your pitch but takes between a minute and 2 to walk there and at night the park has street lights. The bins are in the same spot and encourage customers to dispose of their rubbish as the leave.
We are surprised you felt the showers were small as they have the wet space and a dry space and we have not had that comment before.
As with all businesses the costs are reflecting increases across the board that we need to pay. We are a small family owned site that we are very proud of and all comments are welcome and reflected on.

Local attractions

You’ll find postcard-worthy surroundings all about Claylands. Water fans can meander along the winding banks of the River Wyre (so winding in fact, this is how the river got its name) and take a stroll on the river’s footpaths; Lancaster Canal is also nearby for lazy waterside ambles. The good news is that the river really is right on the doorstep at Claylands, so all you have to decide is which way you want to go. (If you’re really stuck, the staff on site will be more than happy to point you in the right direction, and reception is full of information leaflets and people ready to share their local knowledge.) Or you could just amble about snapping shots of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty... The market town of Garstang, five minutes' drive from Claylands, is an excellent option for this latter, as its whitewashed cottages, uneven streets and country drinkeries may make the imaginative feel like they're in a Jane Austen novel. Further afield, Blackpool is half an hour away, and both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are reachable in under 40 minutes.
