  • Lake District working farm two miles from Thirlmere
  • A 10-minute drive to Derwentwater, Keswick and Grasmere
  • Adult-only dog-friendly site; 20 minutes' walk to the local pub
Want to wake up, lace up your boots and head off on a hearty hike straight from your pitch? Stay at Stybeck Farm near Keswick in the Lake District – pitches here are on a busy working farm where the fields give way to fells, crags and lakes. About 10 minutes’ drive from Keswick and Grasmere, the farm is less than two miles from Thirlmere, with Helvellyn rising above and Blencathra and Skiddaw about seven miles away. Base yourself here and large parts of the Lake District National Park can become your playground. A 10-minute jaunt in the car brings you to Derwentwater, an excellent launching place for boat trips. In 20 minutes you can drive to Ullswater, and Windemere is half an hour’s drive. If you fancy leaving your car behind, there’s a handy bus stop at the bottom of the lane. The family run a small farm shop on site selling their own vegetables and eggs. If you need to pick up more in the way of supplies, or go out to eat, head into Keswick and Grasmere. A closer option for filling up on food is the local pub, 20 minutes’ walk away. If you fancy kicking back and just enjoying your surroundings, there’s nearly always some animal antics to see – from feeding the inquisitive chickens to watching the sheep shearing or saying hi to the goats, donkeys and cows out in the fields.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Great location between Keswick and Grasmere. Very easy to get to travelling from either north or south on M6.

Disliked Toilets and shower could be a bit cleaner. Those looking for quiet mornings may want to look elsewhere as this is a working farm with sheep, chickens, donkeys, and very vocal sheepdogs.

Peace and quiet!

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Quiet, unfussy site - good basics, clean facilities and hot showers (take pound coins!). Ideal location for anything on the 555 bus route. Louise was super friendly but not intrusive. It's a working farm, so don't expect glamour - but do expect a peaceful break (without much signal!). Cafe 5 minutes away is a bonus.

Lovely quaint site, on a working farm with tractors, dogs, chickens.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Instant access to the walking trails. Pub nearby and very welcoming hosts.
A proper 'rustic' feel to the place, so don't go expecting super modern facilities.

Disliked Slightly steep access to some of the pitches, but OK for 90% of vans and confident drivers.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Views. Location was very good and staying on a working farm so that you get to see the animals. Buses run from outside the farm so if you don't feel like driving this is an option to use public transport.

Disliked Not all pitches are level. There is no WIFI and mobile reception not good in the valley

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked The friendly owners / farmer are nice. The bus into Keswick at the farm entrance is handy. It's a cheap site.

Disliked This place was not for me! It is more a base to park your van and walk. It's tight on space, not particularly pretty, the toilets are 2 small outside loos accessed through the main farm yard - there are 5 or 6 dogs in outbuildings and they bark madly every time you cross the yard. Even at night. And you cannot walk your own dog across the yard, you have to go around the long way. The shower is a small dark outside room, I didnt want to go in there. No where to brush teeth etc, just the hand sink in the loo. The dish washing sink is a cold tap and a wonky old sink outside, the bins were overflowing. The road noise is annoying.

BRILLIANT

Liked We loved it all ....it's as described ...Working farm , so animal nosies and farm noises which we enjoyed listening too , the Happy Donkey was ace to hear in the morning, great location for walkers it's close to the local bus so didn't have to move the van , we walled everyday , could stayed a month and still find plenty walks left to do, bus stop is at the drive entrance £3 where ever your going, the views are amazing , On arrival we just went in a space hooked up and looked for the owner later to pay , we found the owner easy going and chatty , Toilets and shower basic but very clean £1 in the shower lasted ages Place to empty your loo easy to use , small pot wash area , Plenty room between vans , We really enjoyed our stay and will book direct next time with the owner - Coffee shop and pub close by And no signal which we again appreciated

Disliked Nothing to dislike it's as described working busy farm

Local attractions

Travel 10 minutes in the car, and about 5000 years back in time, to see Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the earliest constructions of its kind in Britain. It’s also 10 minutes’ drive to start your journey to discover another important part of the Lake District’s history – albeit a bit more recent – on the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Trail, which repurposes the Victorian railway line as an accessible path through tunnels and over bridges. If the weather isn’t playing nice, there are a couple of popular places to while away a rainy few hours in Keswick (10 minutes' drive): the Derwent Pencil Museum and The Puzzling Place, where nothing is quite as it seems. Keswick's also the place for boat trips and watersports on Derwentwater. Alternatively, if you fancy a pint or a dram to put a spring in your step, and want to learn all about how they’re made, you could pay a visit to the Keswick Brewing Company (10 minutes) or the Lakes Distillery in Cockermouth (20 minutes).
