  • Lake District working farm two miles from Thirlmere
  • A 10-minute drive to Derwentwater, Keswick and Grasmere
  • Adult-only dog-friendly site; 20 minutes' walk to the local pub
Want to wake up, lace up your boots and head off on a hearty hike straight from your pitch? Stay at Stybeck Farm near Keswick in the Lake District – pitches here are on a busy working farm where the fields give way to fells, crags and lakes. About 10 minutes’ drive from Keswick and Grasmere, the farm is less than two miles from Thirlmere, with Helvellyn rising above and Blencathra and Skiddaw about seven miles away. Base yourself here and large parts of the Lake District National Park can become your playground. A 10-minute jaunt in the car brings you to Derwentwater, an excellent launching place for boat trips. In 20 minutes you can drive to Ullswater, and Windemere is half an hour’s drive. If you fancy leaving your car behind, there’s a handy bus stop at the bottom of the lane. The family run a small farm shop on site selling their own vegetables and eggs. If you need to pick up more in the way of supplies, or go out to eat, head into Keswick and Grasmere. A closer option for filling up on food is the local pub, 20 minutes’ walk away. If you fancy kicking back and just enjoying your surroundings, there’s nearly always some animal antics to see – from feeding the inquisitive chickens to watching the sheep shearing or saying hi to the goats, donkeys and cows out in the fields.

What customers say

Grand little farm site, lovely views, great for walkers. Owners are sound, handy for walks & buses. Basic but clean facilities, hot showers for a bit extra. Farm sounds are part of it, dodgy phone signal too. Showers could do with a bit of a spruce up for some.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Absolutely lovely working farm with all the views you could want from a lakes location. Loved how near we were to Keswick, Derwent and Thirlmere. Site is small and adult only which is perfect for us. Shower, toilet and washing up area are basic but perfectly clean and functional. Host family were welcoming and farm dogs were brilliantly behaved. We’ll be back next year!

Disliked There’s nothing not to like here… it’s a working farm, if that’s not your thing then don’t book it!

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Good location, small campsite, electric hook up reliable - worth noting it is a working farm so to expect smells and sounds as such, also can hear main road - didn’t bother me as a heavy sleeper, but can imagine being a pain for lighter sleepers!

Disliked No working hot tap for washing up area, which is also not covered so not ideal if caught in rain. Shower was poor, paid a £1 for about 2 minutes worth of (albeit warm) water. Mould in showers and bathrooms - could do to see a refresh!

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked We stayed here for 2 nights on our way back from doing the NC500. Beautiful surroundings with cows, sheep, chickens and you could hear the donkey. The owner was lovely, very friendly and accommodating. Site was clean 👌 pub down the road, served really nice food.
Would recommend and definitely will stay again.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked The site is close to Keswick which was ideal for us. We didn't use any facilities as we only stayed one night

Disliked Pitch that our friends and I was told to park was definitely not a pitch and for £27 night we thought it was expensive for what we got. We were parked on a side lane. This lane was a used road by residents and farm traffic. Couldn't sit outside and enjoy the views as there wasnt anywhere.

Everything you'd expect from farm camping. Good facilities but rustic.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Good value, quiet, close to many great walks including Thirlmere. Cafe next door, gastro pub 1/2 mile along road. All camping facilities Inc hookup, albeit rustic (it is a farm). Beautiful hillside location if you overlook the farm buildings.

Disliked Showers cost £1 for 5 minutes and arent the cleanest. No phone signal or WiFi ( but available at cafe next door). Expect early morning farmyard sounds and smells.

Electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Last minute booking and accommodated us without any issue, welcoming and pleasant site, this is a working farm so expect a little noise. Beautiful surroundings, only a short drive to the lovely derwent water and Keswick.

signal is poor.

Local attractions

Travel 10 minutes in the car, and about 5000 years back in time, to see Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of the earliest constructions of its kind in Britain. It’s also 10 minutes’ drive to start your journey to discover another important part of the Lake District’s history – albeit a bit more recent – on the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Trail, which repurposes the Victorian railway line as an accessible path through tunnels and over bridges. If the weather isn’t playing nice, there are a couple of popular places to while away a rainy few hours in Keswick (10 minutes' drive): the Derwent Pencil Museum and The Puzzling Place, where nothing is quite as it seems. Keswick's also the place for boat trips and watersports on Derwentwater. Alternatively, if you fancy a pint or a dram to put a spring in your step, and want to learn all about how they’re made, you could pay a visit to the Keswick Brewing Company (10 minutes) or the Lakes Distillery in Cockermouth (20 minutes).
