  • Small and peaceful family farm site with views of the Yorkshire Dales
  • A 20-minute drive to the Lake District and Arnside & Silverdale
  • Walks from the doorstep; shared cooking area with gas cooker
Surrounded by craggy views and hikes from the doorstep, Shepherd’s Crag Glamping is a peaceful sort of place – and it's kept that way by only having a handful of guests at any one time to stay at this lovely site surrounded by the gorgeous Cumbrian countryside. Feel free to be as active or as lazy as you like here – if you choose the latter there are views of the Yorkshire Dales and Ingleborough to accompany any mid-afternoon chats or naps, plus evenings by the barbecue or firepit. What might a day go like here? Once you’ve rolled out of the hay and rustled up something to eat using the shared gas cooking (with washing-up facilities and ice pack freezing also available), you might want to head to the rear of the site. From there, it’s a short walk to the Hutton Roof Crags, Newbiggin Crags and Farleton Knott, which together have far-reaching views of the Lake District and the sea (this area is a hot walking, hiking, climbing and mountain biking spot, by the way). Shepherd’s Crag Glamping is on a family farm, and guests have access to simple facilities like charging points, two composting loos and hot showers (as it’s such a small site, there should never be too long to queue). Plus, all the pitches are carefully positioned to give you your own space and privacy while still taking advantage of the great views. When you’re ready to get into the role of intrepid explorer, the Lake District National Park is 20 minutes’ drive away, as is the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Yorkshire Dales are 25 minutes’ drive away too.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Excellent customer service, Joe kept us updated on the condition of the field as the weather was poor leading up to our stay. We had no problem with the access (camping in VW) and was so impressed with the facilities and how clean everything was. Beautiful location, just stunning views! We were so lucky to have the place to ourselves with just the sheep, horses and cows for neighbours! Despite the miserable weather, we had such a lovely weekend in this peaceful spot. Loved that there was a quick access up to the craggs which is a fab walk. We also walked to the pub in Lupton, which was a fairly easy walk but didn’t really rate the pub itself - expensive for lunch and the staff were more attentive to locals so would give that a miss next time we come.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The view, the quiet, the level well-groomed pitches, the simple clean facilities, the smallness and (mostly) the weather! Also liked the advice to approach from the south west. Lanes from the other directions are VERY narrow with very few passing places.

Disliked: No grumbles at all.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked: My second stay this year. Brilliant site, although quite close to the motorway and an A road very rural and quiet. If you like waking up to cows checking out your tent or van over the fence, and sheep in the paddock next door you will love it. I stayed because I wanted to walk one of the three peaks in North Yorkshire, but it's very easy to get up to the lakes too, from this site. Joe the owner is a nice friendly guy and I'm already looking forward to getting back next year.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike at all.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We had a lovely week staying at this campsite. Amazing weather, amazing location. You staying in the meddle of nowhere and at the same time close to everything you need. Very peaceful place just an hour drive from Lake District. Public footpath that leads you on the top of the hill where you can see sea side and all the Cumbria 😊 At the campsite, well maintained eco loo. Showers with a hot water. Also shared gas cooker and fridge available at the washing corner. We had a pitch number 3 that was perfectly leveled. Cars not allowed next to the tent but parking spot is just a few meters away. And we think it’s a perfect decision as you won’t be hearing how someone slamming car doors :) also we are very happy that this campsite have their rules about the quiet hours 10pm-7am, and no music, so you can just listen cows, birds and sheep's 😊 make sure that you look up when it’s get darker and if it’s not cloudy you can see sky’s full of star ❤️ Joe was very friendly and helpful. We where provided with very clear instructions how to get to the campsite. From now it’s our top place where to stay when we are out to Lake District ❤️

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: My son and I stayed on this great site with excellent views towards Ingleborough in the distance and the immediate valley. We had pitch 3 which benefited from a nice level surface and uninterrupted views. It's a small site which was quiet and had easy access to the fells for walking. There was a viewing area in the cow sheds so we could watch the milking and they sold cheese and raw milk. The toilets and showers were clean and tidy, there is a communal fridge to make use of and hot water. The owner was really helpful and friendly. There is mobile phone signal but no charging points so make sure you bring a power bank.

Disliked: Need to take it steady getting to the site as the roads are extremely narrow. You'll need to set up your sat nav too, but it was with the wait.

Local attractions

Ramblers’ biggest dilemma might be deciding upon which place to head to first. Straight to hikes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (25 minutes’ drive), where some goals might be to hike the Three Peaks or track down waterfalls like Ingleton Falls, Janet’s Foss and Aysgarth Falls? While you’re holidaying here, it might seem like there’s no end to the characterful villages and historic towns. Take Kirkby Lonsdale (15 minutes), for instance, with its independent shops and eateries, 14th-century bridge and Ruskins View over the Lune Valley. There are pretty views all over the place in the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) too. The two coastal villages are packed with hiking trailheads, ice cream shops and fish and chips shops. Over in the Lake District National Park (20 minutes) there are hikes such as The Langdale Pikes (55 minutes) and pretty towns like Bowness-on-Windermere (half an hour) and Grasmere (50 minutes). Those with a sweet tooth might appreciate Grasmere’s tasty gingerbread, while Wordsworth readers can visit a museum on his life.
