General

  • Wildlife haven on a family-run farm site in the Cumbria countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; pub 10 minutes' walk away

Join the ranks of the farm animals at Puddlemire… and make your way to your chosen plot by gator or quad bike. Here, you'll join a friendly, family-run site in the Cumbria countryside, resting between lakes and dales and bordered by a trickling beck. A 20-minute drive from Yorkshire Dales National Park and Lake District, this is a wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Kirkby Lonsdale and well-situated for walking or cycling your way around literary villages and hilly crags, or past ribbon lakes and hay meadows… whichever takes your fancy.

This is a simple site with showers and composting toilets. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site, as long as they’re kept off the grass, and wood packs, tea boxes, and barbecue packs can be delivered daily to ensure you don't go hungry.

That’s if you haven’t already stocked up on supplies from a couple of shops within a 10-minute drive or organic goods from the farm shop within 15 minutes’ drive. Handily, there are also several pubs within 15 minutes' drive, where you can either nurse a pint or fuel up for the next day's activities.

Please note

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Quiet and idyllic camp by a small river.
Facilities are good. The family who run the site are friendly and very helpful. During our visit we spoke to a family who were staying for ten days but were already feeling their stay was too short.
We will definitely return and stay longer in this beautiful part of the country, so much to see and do.

Lovely site, new toilets and showers were fab and really clean. We stayed for 3 nights and this was our first time camping as a family. Our little boy absolutely loved it, didn’t ask for his tablet once, loved the stream and animals nearby. The pitches are well spread out and it was actually really nice not to have the cars nearby as there was no noise and it felt so safe for the kids to be running around. Thank you to Noah’s family for leaving us your logs on your last day 😁

Absolutely stunning place. So much fun for the kids, they has the best first camping experience. Will definately be back next year!
So many perks to this place...no cars meant the kids could run free. The little lake running through provided hours on entertainment as did the gator that took us back & forth from the car. The toilets & shower were always clean . The owner was very friendly & helpful. Can't wait to bring our friends next time.

Absolutely the best and most spectacular place to set up a tent.29/08/2021

We stayed here for 5 days, with our twin daughters, at the end of August. Absolutely the best and most spectacular place to set up a tent. This probably ruined our future camping experiences, as we'll have high expectations now, due to the elevated standards of Puddlemire.

Can you imagine waking up every morning to the sound of a very shallow river/stream running just 3 metres from your tent, at the bottom of the hill, surrounded by trees and nature?

All of that, with a private hot-water shower at your disposal only, and a private composting toilet with the option to use a "normal" shared toilet too, if you dislike the composting one.

Very few tents on the campsite, so lots of space for yourself, and no busy, noisy neighbours next to your tent.

Cars are parked at the top of the hill, and the owners will scramble their ATVs at your command to carry down your boot-full load of camping items.

The fact that there are no cars on the site is what makes it special: no engines starting early in the morning next to your tent, just pure silence, the sound of the river, and the birds singing - this is a place where the Earth can hear itself think.

The kids can run freely on the soft grass all day, they can play in the stream as the water is really shallow, and the ducks on the stream will enchant you with their chit-chat and occasional fighting.

For day trips, you can drive 30 minutes to Ingleton Waterfalls (an absolutely stunning walk on nature trails like you've never seen before), visit the White Scar Caves nearby, and drive up to Bowness-on-Windermere for a boat hire experience, a swim in the lake, and a nice meal at a busy restaurant on the lake.

The owners are also some of the kindest and most helpful people I've met, that certainly treat every guest as someone who is part of their family. Anything we've asked them, they were immediately on the case and helpful, and went the extra mile with everything they've done.

Puddlemire is certainly a place that will stick to my memory as one of the best holidays ever.

    Disliked:

The price difference between by the beck pitches and otherwise. The other pitches have use of Flushable toilets and shower bit it's not personal.

The 'by the beck pitches' which are situated right next to the others have use of their own personal compostable toilet and shower.

Apart from it being personal, paying more to do your business into a bag was the only thing I disliked about this site.

I do hope the owners keep the site small as this is the main attraction for many. Seclusion.

From the manager...

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your review, we are glad you loved the seclusion of the location, it is a truly special place.
We will most definitely look at the pricing structure next year, the flushing toilets were added late in the season, so initially there was no choice, just the composting toilets and private showers.
The site only opened this year and we were very aware of the issues with covid & how people wanted their own space, we geared the pricing towards the amount of work that was involved, to empty the loos twice a day, clean the shower pod & also the transfer time, helping moving your gear when you set up, and helping load your gear when you go home. We feel the pricing is fair.

The flush-able toilets are available for everyone, these are much less time consuming for us to service, so we are able to offer these at a reduced rate.

The small size of the campsite made it very peaceful and the spacious camping pitches by the stream. The facilities, whilst basic, were kept spotlessly clean. Our hosts who were friendly and helpful but also unobtrusive. The weather was wonderful throughout our stay which made everything easier.

    Disliked:

Nothing, although if the weather had been wet our experience may have been less enjoyable as you cannot access the campsite with your car.

Where to go first? If you want to test your aim, clay pigeon shooting could become your next hobby at Crabtree Clay Shoot (five minutes' drive; check ahead for opening days) or climb the local limestone-paved paths at Hutton Roof Crags (10 minutes’ drive).

For countryside enthusiasts, the Lake District (20 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes) national parks each have their own draws. In the Lake District, the fells and lakes offer ample opportunities for sailing, rock climbing, or cycling. While, in the Yorkshire Dales, you can track down waterfalls and old barns.

Northwards, more walking and cycling trails await at Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (25 minutes), this time through ancient woodlands and limestone. While you’re there, visit Sizergh Castle (15 minutes) and stroll the stately grounds and estate.

If you’re longing for a sandy beach, there are long stretches of sand at Silverdale (30 minutes) and Sandside (20 minutes). Head further south and you’ll find Morecambe (30 minutes), where another bay competes with a 12th-century castle, prison and a stroll-worthy promenade for your attention.
