General

  • Wildlife haven on a family-run farm site in the Cumbria countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; pub 20 minutes' walk away

Join the ranks of the farm animals at Puddlemire… and make your way to your chosen plot by gator or quad bike. Here, you'll join a friendly, family-run site in the Cumbria countryside, resting between lakes and dales and bordered by a trickling beck. A 20-minute drive from Yorkshire Dales National Park and Lake District, this is a wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Kirkby Lonsdale and well-situated for walking or cycling your way around literary villages and hilly crags, or past ribbon lakes and hay meadows… whichever takes your fancy.

This is a simple site with warm showers and flushing toilets. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site, as long as they’re kept off the grass.

That’s if you haven’t already stocked up on supplies from a couple of shops within a 10-minute drive or organic goods from the farm shop within 15 minutes’ drive. Handily, there are also several pubs within 15 minutes' drive, where you can either nurse a pint or fuel up for the next day's activities.

Really lovely, basic, tranquil site. Owners were very friendly and really helpful. There were no significant issues when we stayed other than a blocked toilet that was sorted almost immediately even though it was after dark.

The stream running along the site edge adds to the tranquility. The kids loved paddling in it. Cows in the neighbouring field were docile and used to visitors so the kids (2 and 5) were able to feed them handfuls of grass, which was a big hit.

The site is a the bottom of a bit of a hill so owners advise against driving down to pitching area, although some did, and we did to pack up in departure, as they were moving cattle. Otherwise they have a land rover or quad with trailer and are happy to help move gear to and from cars, and were ever present around check out time (11) to help any groups who were leaving that morning.

We were booked in the part of the field without private toilet/showers, which suited us better as no-one was wandering past our tent and we were far enough from the access to the stream that we could let the kids run free without worrying they would go near it unsupervised. This part of the field has 3 flushing toilets and two gas powered showers, which was ample during our stay. Two washing up sinks round the back with washing up liquid and bowls for anyone without their own. All kept really clean throughout our stay, with owners coming by to clean and change bins etc at least a couple of times a day. Don't think there is WiFi but we had strong 4G signal at all times so had no issue.

Even over an August Bank Holiday weekend the site was still quiet. Maybe 15 tents max? All groups were respectful and quiet after dark. There were families with younger and older kids, some couples, and one group of about a dozen scouts for a couple of nights.

The site is close enough to the M6 to be easily accessible but far enough away that there isn't any road noise. Really well located for Arnside and Silverdale AONB and about 45 minutes drive to the South Lakes or Windermere.

Final word for the night sky, which was on a par with the best I have ever seen.

Overall it was a really smooth, pleasant stay and we would definitely book again if we were in this neck of the woods.

    Disliked:

One section of the stream fence is damaged and some older kids were climbing through the gap. This could do with fixing before the next season. One separate sink with mirror for shaving etc would be nice in addition to washing up sinks. Although the site is basic that's how we generally like it. The only mod con that would be really useful is a freezer for ice packs. Other than that we really can't fault it.

Lovely quiet site. Great facilities, views and stream to enjoy. Space to ourselves. Helpful, friendly son with jeep to help carry our things to a pitch. We enjoyed a few campfires and paddled in the stream.

    Disliked:

Not enough instructions to speed up arrival. Seems very flexible but no one around when we arrived a little later than planned, we had no clue where to go.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, we are so glad you enjoyed the site, the stream is good fun for the children & camps fires are a great way to extend you evenings. We are sorry we were not there on your arrival, we usually send out a letter asking guests to give us a call 15-20 mins before they arrive, which allows us plenty of time to get to where we need to be. As we operate a dairy farm, at the time you arrived we had a particularly difficult calving to cope with, the good news is we have a lovely healthy new heifer who hopefully will enter our dairy herd in a couple of years, but this did mean you had to wait longer than we would have liked for us to help you with your gear. I hope it didn't spoil your visit too much.

Beautiful scenery with a babbling brook running alongside to lull us to sleep.
Clean facilities, basic but did the job.
No fuss easy going site, Shirley gave us a warm welcome and didn’t rush us on our departure day. Loved 4x4 to take us and our belongings to the pitch, real novelty.
We also hired a fire pit with a bag of wood for the stay that was emptied for our 2nd day.
The children loved paddling in the brook and greeting the cows in the neighbouring field.
Location was great to pop out in the car to nearby Ingleton and Kirby Lonsdale.
    Would definitely go again

Thank you for your 10 out of 10 review, we really appreciate it. Looking at your photo of our toilet block, I think my winter job must be to add a bit of paint to smarten it up, Robin was so proud of his recycled creation, and adding flushing toilets to the site with hot showers, maybe we didn't just quite pay enough attention to it's appearance!! So glad you had a great time, I think our cows will miss you.

Fantastic campsite- very peaceful, great location. The owners are extremely helpful and thoughtful whilst leaving you to enjoy your holiday. Very chilled/laid back vibe and you're not cramped in- lots of space between pitches.

Facilities immaculate and the shower was great. Lots of thought been put into setting this campsite up.

Voted best campsite ever by 9, 7 and 3 year old because there is lots of room to run around (including the best hill to roll down!), lots of nature (we saw a kingfisher and owls) and the beck to play in. And of course the gator rides which were a lovely touch! We can't wait to come again.

Where to go first? If you want to test your aim, clay pigeon shooting could become your next hobby at Crabtree Clay Shoot (five minutes' drive; check ahead for opening days) or climb the local limestone-paved paths at Hutton Roof Crags (10 minutes’ drive).

For countryside enthusiasts, the Lake District (20 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes) national parks each have their own draws. In the Lake District, the fells and lakes offer ample opportunities for sailing, rock climbing, or cycling. While, in the Yorkshire Dales, you can track down waterfalls and old barns.

Northwards, more walking and cycling trails await at Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (25 minutes), this time through ancient woodlands and limestone. While you’re there, visit Sizergh Castle (15 minutes) and stroll the stately grounds and estate.

If you’re longing for a sandy beach, there are long stretches of sand at Silverdale (30 minutes) and Sandside (20 minutes). Head further south and you’ll find Morecambe (30 minutes), where another bay competes with a 12th-century castle, prison and a stroll-worthy promenade for your attention.
