Greenhowe Caravans: View from caravan site

General

  • On the edge of woodland with views of Lakeland hills from the grounds
  • A five-minute drive to Dungeon Ghyll Force and 10 to Skelwith Bridge
  • Walks on famed trails of Langdale Pikes accessible from the park

Looking to lay your head in the Lake District for a hol wandering around famed fells and tarns? Venture out into some of the best scenery in Britain from your comfy Cumbria spot at Greenhowe Caravans, less than a mile from Great Langdale.

This site surrounded by legendary Lakeland hills is in a quiet and secluded area edged by woodland and with walks starting right outside its gates. Set off for the Langdale Pikes past craggy Whitegill Ravine – perhaps to tackle Pavey Ark, Pike Of Stickle and Harrison Stickle, around a 50-minute walk away – or take on longer treks to poetically named fells like Crinkle Crags and Pike O’Blisco around two and a half hours away on foot.

Seeking something less strenuous on the legs? Well-known waterfall Dungeon Ghyll Force and the flatter paths around it are accessible on an easy 25-minute stroll; if you’ve brought a four-legged friend along on your break, you could also just amble around the park's dog-walking area instead. Designated drivers might be pleased to note that you can also walk to the Sticklebarn bar, half a mile away on foot…

Got clothes muddy on meanders through the hills? A laundry with hot and cold water, washing machines, tumble dryers, iron and ironing board are at the park (just pick up tokens for the machines in reception or the shop).

The location was great for walking from the door - Wainwright bagging heaven and some lovely villages and river walks. We parked the car Monday and didn't use it till going home Friday. The views were beautiful sitting at the table outside the caravan. The vans are in woodland so don't become overheated. The shower was powerful with plenty of hot water. The owner was very nice friendly and cheerful.

    Disliked:

The double mattress needs renewing in van 9. I had to lay a quilt under the sheet for comfort.

Loved the langdale vally with its cracking walks and a few good pubs/ eating houses all within walking distance from the site. The site it’s self has a very steep access rd so don’t drink to much at the pub lol. Take your own bedding, towels, tea towels etc. The shop wasn’t open when we visited but there is one a couple of miles away. There is WiFi if you need it but no mobile signal at all, pay phone on site if you need to contact anyone. Don’t expect to much in the vans but for what you pay i think it’s a fair price. The owner is a very pleasant chap and will do anything he can to help you. All in all I enjoyed my stay here.

    Disliked:

Double mattress needs renewing told owner about this and he thank me for letting him know.
Caravan could have been cleaner but by all means not dirty, just had a smell of curry in it when we arrived.

Other than that it was good value for money and I’d stay again.

Lovely setting among the trees. Caravan has good facilities and was clean. Short walk to two pubs/restaurants and onto the fells. Also able to walk to Ambleside 6 miles away. Caravans set in among the trees so saw woodpecker and treecreeper.
    Very peaceful site.

    Disliked:

Very steep driveway into caravan park. After walking all day up the fells, this was a killer at the end. No shop on site as stated but can take bus to Ambleside. No phone signal, patchy internet and TV reception poor (but that doesn't bother me).

Facilities were very good for the price and the views within a 5-10 minute walk were breathtaking. We stayed 2 nights to do a climb up Scafell Pike which was around a 70 minute drive away. Strongly recommend Greenhowe as a place to stay for that climb.

The van was pretty modern and clean

    Disliked:

Right outside our caravan door was a very dangerous building site full of wires, cables and piping and lots of sharp fencing! It was so dangerous for my young children to be around and really ugly to look at! Also paid a lot for them to provide bedding that was horrible!

The scenery, peace and beauty of Greenhowe. Even though we were aware of other people at the site, we hardly saw them.
We liked the flexibility of the owner - we got to the site earlier than 4pm and were able to go to our caravan which was welcome after a long drive.
The caravan was extremely clean and spacious enough for 2 adults, 4 teenagers and a dog!
The only reason I put 2 stars on for wifi is that it is a bit hit and miss but we were made aware of that on the website so it wasn't a surprise!

    Disliked:

The only thing we could find fault with is the lack of a table and chairs outside the caravan but it wasn't really a problem - we had our own chairs.

Local attractions

Of course, it's all about the walks on a Lake District trip… but that's not to say there aren't alternative activities and attractions to seek out as well.

Bounce over to the Beatrix Potter Gallery, 25 minutes’ drive away, for a look at the author and artist’s illustrations displayed in a 17th-century cottage, or wander to Wray Castle, a National Trust property, to admire the neo-gothic structure and have a mosey around the grounds.

Itching to get out on the water? Paddleboarding courses are to be had at Keswick (a 55-minute drive) and the Ullswater steamers are within an hour's drive. And if you'd rather get your kicks rock climbing, the Langdale Boulders are a mere 20-minute walk from Greenhowe.

Must see

  • Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum (2.5 miles)
  • Rydal Mount and Gardens (3.8 miles)
  • Beatrix Potter Gallery (6.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Grasmere and Great Langdale (2.4 miles)
  • Coniston and Tarn Hows (5.3 miles)
