General

  • On the edge of woodland with views of Lakeland hills from the grounds
  • A five-minute drive to Dungeon Ghyll Force and 10 to Skelwith Bridge
  • Walks on famed trails of Langdale Pikes accessible from the park

Looking to lay your head in the Lake District for a hol wandering around famed fells and tarns? Venture out into some of the best scenery in Britain from your comfy Cumbria spot at Greenhowe Caravans, less than a mile from Great Langdale.

This site surrounded by legendary Lakeland hills is in a quiet and secluded area edged by woodland and with walks starting right outside its gates. Set off for the Langdale Pikes past craggy Whitegill Ravine – perhaps to tackle Pavey Ark, Pike Of Stickle and Harrison Stickle, around a 50-minute walk away – or take on longer treks to poetically named fells like Crinkle Crags and Pike O’Blisco around two and a half hours away on foot.

Seeking something less strenuous on the legs? Well-known waterfall Dungeon Ghyll Force and the flatter paths around it are accessible on an easy 25-minute stroll; if you’ve brought a four-legged friend along on your break, you could also just amble around the park's dog-walking area instead.

Also on site is a shop for stocking up on hiking snacks as well as milk and meat; an off-licence is on hand too for grabbing a can and cracking it open while you take in lush views of the surrounds. Designated drivers might be pleased to note that drinks are also to be had at the Sticklebarn bar, half a mile away on foot…

Got clothes muddy on meanders through the hills? A laundry with hot and cold water, washing machines, tumble dryers, iron and ironing board are at the park (just pick up tokens for the machines in reception or the shop).

The location of the site was amazing...set at the bottom of the valley with plenty of great walks to do from out the caravan door (including up Scarfell - although it is a full day of walking). Site was quiet, clean and well managed with plenty of car parking space available right next to our caravan. The caravan was lovely - clean, spacious and the kitchen was well equipped with all pots/pans/utensils provided (accept a toaster - we just had to use the grill for toast). Would come again!!

    Disliked:

Only downside was the WiFi connection from our caravan. The connection keep dropping out and made it impossible to use the internet (although you could get a better WiFi connection if you walked to outside the site reception building). The lack of phone signal at the site too means you are pretty contactable - which can be a good thing!!

Great area, caravans need a deep clean with new beds/bedding08/23/2020

The area was beautiful, stunning scenery and a couple of nice pubs within short walking distance.

    Disliked:

The beds and the bedrooms were revolting, the cleanliness of the caravan was not great, superficial at best and the smell of mould was heavy throughout. Probably caused by the black mould in the bedding and the dust in the curtains and upholstery. No WiFi signal anywhere really.

Local attractions

Of course, it's all about the walks on a Lake District trip… but that's not to say there aren't alternative activities and attractions to seek out as well.

Bounce over to the Beatrix Potter Gallery, 25 minutes’ drive away, for a look at the author and artist’s illustrations displayed in a 17th-century cottage, or wander to Wray Castle, a National Trust property, to admire the neo-gothic structure and have a mosey around the grounds.

Itching to get out on the water? Paddleboarding courses are to be had at Keswick (a 55-minute drive) and the Ullswater steamers are within an hour's drive. And if you'd rather get your kicks rock climbing, the Langdale Boulders are a mere 20-minute walk from Greenhowe.

Must see

  • Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum (3.9 kilometres)
  • Rydal Mount and Gardens (6.1 kilometres)
  • Beatrix Potter Gallery (9.8 kilometres)
