The Mortal Man Hotel is less than 5 minutes' walk from the site
Non-electric grass pitches with fell views
Non-electric grass tent pitches

  • Off-grid wild pop-up with stunning fell views in Troutbeck Valley
  • Fell walks from the site; Windermere 10 minutes' drive away
  • Pitches by a stream; five minutes’ stroll to the local pub
Off-grid, relaxed, and with plenty of space to pitch where you want, the wild pop-up Mortal Man camping field is set just below The Mortal Man Inn – 10 minutes’ drive from Windermere in Cumbria – and is a simple, family-friendly base from which to enjoy the landscapes of Troutbeck Valley and the surrounding fells. No matter if you’re stopping over for a night or staying a bit longer, this place is all about fresh air, great views and easy access to the alfresco adventures that make the Lake District National Park so special. A fell-fed stream runs alongside the bottom of the camping field, adding to the peaceful setting and forging a real connection to the landscape with the noise of burbling water. Begin the day with the site's special breakfast deal of a brew and a barm for an additional fee. There are stunning views in all directions – especially at sunrise and sunset on clear days, and the site is spot-on for walkers and outdoor lovers, with plenty of hiking and cycling routes starting right from the pitches. And after a day on the fell, you’re less than five minutes’ stroll from the pub, where good meals, local drinks and a well-earned rest by the fire await.

What customers say

This is a wild, pop-up campsite with a fantastic location and stunning views. The pub offers excellent food and a friendly atmosphere. While many appreciate the basic, budget-friendly nature of the site, some reviews mention cramped pitches and the lack of running water and showers, which are clearly stated in the booking information. Noise from other campers was an issue for a few visitors on busy weekends. The manager is actively reviewing feedback to improve the guest experience.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Great location

Disliked No water source on the site, chemical toilets had no chemicals or water so couldn't flush or wash hands and the pitch wasn't as level as anywhere I had slept in the mountains the previous three nights. I like minimal campsites a lot, but £30 per night is crazy

Liked Lovely place with a great family vibe, we was lucky enough to go when the festival was on which was great.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review Gav!

We’re delighted you enjoyed the family-friendly atmosphere and had such a great time while the festival was on. It was a fab day indeed.

It’s wonderful to hear you had a memorable stay, and we hope to welcome you, and your family, back again soon for hopefully next year's pop-up!

Thanks,

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Lovely location, nice bar & beer garden very friendly helpful staff.
Di went above and beyond, opening up for us early Sunday morning and making us hot drinks!

Disliked Overheard a guy in tent next say the portaloo’s were grim, so we walked up to use the toilets in the hotel bar.
Only did continental breakfast on Sundays. Would have liked breakfast rolls and eggs on toast!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed our location, bar and beer garden, and that our team were friendly and helpful. It’s particularly lovely to hear your kind words about Di going above and beyond to help you on Sunday morning - we will pass that on (she is great!).

Our two portaloo toilets are serviced and maintained every day by our team, so we’re disappointed that their condition has contributed to the rating when you didn’t personally use them. We do appreciate that you heard another guest’s comments, although we feel it’s a little unfortunate for this to influence your experience without having used the facilities yourself.

Our pop-up is wild camping, but we’re pleased that you were able to make use of the hotel toilets once we opened, and we hope this helped make your stay a little more comfortable.

Thank you again for highlighting both what you enjoyed and where we could improve. We hope we may have the opportunity to provide you with a better experience in the future.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the lovely feedback Paula!

We’re delighted you enjoyed the scenery, food and beer garden. 😊

We’re sorry to hear the portaloo toilets weren’t to your liking — as we’re an outdoor pop-up venue, we do use portable toilets (as legally that is all we are allowed).

Thanks again for visiting!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Easy enough set up. Good that you are able to choose your own pitch. Great location, good that you are so close to Windermere but not in the thick of it. Great that you are super close to the pub. Parking was ok for us despite the reviews! Understand why you can’t park on site to preserve the pitch, really like this!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review! 😊

We’re really pleased you enjoyed the freedom of choosing your own pitch and appreciated our location, being close to Windermere while still having a peaceful setting.

We’re also glad the parking worked well for you and that you understood why we keep vehicles off the pitches to help preserve the grass.

It’s great to hear you enjoyed being so close to the pub too!

We’d love to welcome you back again!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked I traveled with my son who is 5 , both areused to camping and have been to a few different sites now and we loved it here .
The site was clean , the toilets were maintained and the instructions were clear .
The pub was amazing , staff faultless and food and real ale brilliant.
For us it was great for a short stay.

Disliked Parking wasn’t an issue for myself but due to the pub and hotel being so amazing you have to be lucky to get a car spot .

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review Emily! It really means a lot to us as a small independent business.

It’s fantastic to hear that you and your son had such a great stay and enjoyed the clean facilities, the pub, our team (we also think they are FAB), food and real ales.

We’re delighted that the site was a great fit for a short camping break. A true wild camper indeed!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked The location was great

Disliked Driving on/off the camping field. Lack of parking spaces
No water available

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a good review Jayne!

We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed our location at our wild pop-up campsite.

Regarding parking - you can park down lane of the hotel, in the nearby laybys or legal roads. This should have been explained to you upon signing in. You can also drive to the field gate and drop off belongings there for ease, if you re-visit.

The lack of running water down there is advertised & also explained at sign-in, but there is a free water re-fill station in the restaurant, a vending machine and a bar for drink top-ups during our opening hours for those that haven't brought any with them.

Thanks,
The MM Team

We’re delighted you enjoyed the great location, the nearby pub, and found the site so well maintained.

We appreciate your feedback regarding the pitch sizes. There is water in the portaloo sinks though, it is just a foot pump to get it out :)

We hope to welcome you back for another stay soon!
