What customers say
This wild, off-grid pop-up site is lauded for its breathtaking mountain vistas, lekker staff, and great value. It's a basic setup, no running water, but you can get it from the pub. Some found noisy campers and portaloos a bit dodgy, with the manager sorting it. Pitch spacing during busy times is being looked into.

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review!
We're delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay, found everything well set up, and that our team made you feel welcome.
We're sorry to hear the portable toilets weren't as fresh as they should have been during your visit. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. They do get cleaned daily, but we will review our servicing schedule to help ensure they remain clean and pleasant for all our guests.
We hope to welcome you back again soon.

I was booked to return but now would like to cancel.
Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch
Liked It was ok once I settled in
Disliked Unwelcoming proprietor, made me fill in forms for sleeping in a field with NO WATER!! Apparently says on pitch up that you bring your own. Wouldn't allow me to sleep in my car either, for insurance purposes. If it's a wild camp, you surely don't charge people, or have those portaloos. He did let me fill up from the bar but the attention to comfort of guests was minimal. I know it's cheap, you rough it for that price, but water is a basic need and you shouldn't feel like a pain in the arse guest for asking for it! Sad how this pub has gone downhill

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn't meet your expectations.
We do clearly state on our Pitchup listing that this is a wild, off-grid pop-up campsite with no running water available on the camping field, so guests know what to expect before booking.
While there isn't a mains water supply on the campsite itself, the pub is typically open 10:30am - 10pm each evening, and guests are welcome to use our free water station themselves, purchase bottled water from the bar or the vending machine located at reception during opening hours.
We're also sorry if our insurance policy regarding sleeping in vehicles was disappointing. Unfortunately, this is not something we're able to make exceptions to. Our staff member did however suggest nearby roads, lanes and laybys, which there is plenty of.
For a £10 per person pitch, we aim to provide a simple, affordable wild camping experience while still offering facilities such as two portable toilets, benches and access to staying in the beautiful nature of Troutbeck valley between the hub of walking routes up the fells, which many guests appreciate as an added convenience.
We're sorry to hear you felt unwelcome, as that is never our intention. We wish you all the best with your future camping trips.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review Nathan!
We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed the mountain views, the nearby walks, and found our wild pop-up campsite to be a comfortable and great-value place to stay.
It's especially nice to hear your kind words about our team—they'll really appreciate them.
We look forward to welcoming you back for another stay soon! :)

Disliked Wasn’t a campsite as advertised, more of a patch of grass where they allowed a few tents, directly outside a pub. We arrived and turned straight around and stayed elsewhere, despite already paying to stay, we would’ve rather lost our money than stay there. Didn’t feel safe. Tried to call to get our money back but no answer on the telephone number.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear you decided not to stay.
Our listing describes the site as a wild camping off-grid pop-up, and the photos accurately show the field, so guests know the style of camping they're booking. It isn't a traditional campsite, and we feel our prices also reflect this.
The campsite is not directly outside the pub (it is a 2-3 min walk). There is a field and a stream between the pub and our camping field, and we're situated in the beautiful Troutbeck Valley, surrounded by the fells in a peaceful rural setting.
We're sorry to read that you didn't feel safe, although we're not sure what gave you that impression as you chose not to stay. If there was something specific that caused you concern, we'd genuinely appreciate you letting us know so we can understand and address it if necessary.
As our listing accurately describes the site, the facilities provided, and the style of camping on offer, we're unable to offer a refund simply because you decided not to stay after arriving. We wish you all the best with your future camping trips.
Thanks,
The MM Team

Liked Very basic campsite. No water but 2 portaloo,s. Stream is pretty but lots of bugs so bring midge spray.
Disliked No water on site. People washing dishes in stream.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We appreciate your comments and feedback.
We do clearly state on our Pitchup listing that this is a wild, off-grid pop-up campsite with no running water available on site, so guests know what to expect before booking. That said, the pub tends to be open until around 10/ 10:30pm each evening, and our team is always happy to help if you need to refill a water bottle using our water station or purchase any bottled water/ drinks during opening hours.
The stream is a natural feature of the site, and as with any countryside location, there can be midges and other insects during warmer months, so bringing insect repellent is good advice.
We ask guests to camp responsibly, and while we can't control individual guests' actions, we encourage everyone to minimise their impact on the natural environment.
We're glad you enjoyed the stream though, and hope future visitors looking for a simple, back-to-basics wild pop up camping experience will enjoy what the site has to offer.
Thanks,

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed the setting, the stream, and the seating areas!
As this is a pop-up wild camping site, running water is not provided, which is typical for this style of camping. We do make this clear in the booking information so guests know what to expect before they arrive.

We left a night early. It's really not what I look for in a campsite
Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch
Liked Field was clean enough. The pub itself is in a good location for walks. No running water doesn't bother me as a wild camper, and at least they make it clear.
Disliked Had to lug all my gear because there was no space at all near the field to unload (even though there was no mention of not being able to park by the pitch until after booking). The field itself is very small, and there were far too many tents which made it extremely cramped, to the point where tents were almost touching. Unfortunately this made the experience not relaxing whatsoever. Portaloos not especially clean. Weirdly long check-in process... Why do I need to give all my details again, even though I've already booked online?? Decided to lose £20 and move on 1 night early.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback James. We're very sorry to hear that your stay didn't meet your expectations.
We're pleased you enjoyed the location and appreciated that we were clear about the lack of running water. As this is a pop-up wild camping site, running water isn't provided, which is typical for this style of camping. The pub is open until around 10/10:30pm each evening if guests need to refill a water bottle at our water station or purchase any bottled water/ drinks.
Regarding access, guests are welcome to drive down the country lane to unload their camping equipment at the gate of the the field before moving their vehicle. We're sorry if this wasn't clear or if you found unloading difficult.
We also apologise if there was a wait at sign-in. The process involves signing a 1 page waiver form, which is a requirement for things such as safety and also sets out the campsite rules. We appreciate that guests are keen to get settled as quickly as possible.
We also appreciate your comments about the spacing of the pitches. This was an exceptionally busy evening, and as this is our first season operating the pop-up wild camping site, we're reviewing guest feedback carefully to ensure we strike the right balance between capacity and the relaxed atmosphere we're aiming to provide.
Thank you again for your feedback—it will help us improve the experience for future guests.

From the manager: Thank you for your review Angela for our wild camping pop up.
We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed the location and found our hotel team friendly (they are the best)!
We're very sorry that your stay was affected by noise from other campers. We do have quiet hours from 10pm, and once we became aware of the disturbance, the group of young lads responsible were asked to leave the campsite.
We want all of our guests to enjoy a peaceful stay, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for a more relaxing visit in the future.

Have to go back again ASAP
Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch
Liked Amazing hotel and staff .camping facilities were above and beyond for a pop up wild camp . It was clear about no showering when booking so expected none . But there was portaloos and site had some nice features. Swing chair by the stream and picnic tables . Location in trout beck has got to be seen by your own eyes as it’s just stunning and peaceful.

It's great to know the information about the campsite matched your expectations for our wild camping pop up, and we're pleased you made the most of the picnic area and swing by the beck.
Troutbeck really is a special place, and we're so glad you were able to enjoy its beauty and tranquility.
We truly appreciate your kind words and look forward to welcoming you back—whether for another camping trip or for a stay in the hotel with your wife. The team passed on how lovely you were too.
