What a wonderful spot for an outdoor break in the Lake District National Park. As the name suggests, Allan Tarn Escapes is right next to the lake of the same name (which also appeared in ‘Swallows and Amazons’ as Octopus Lagoon). Being right by the water makes this a peaceful and scenic site, and also a very convenient one for those who’d like to do a bit of wild swimming, kayaking or paddleboarding during their stay. You can launch directly onto the water from here and make your way up the river to get out onto Coniston Water for a full day of exploring. That’s the closest attraction, but it’s far from the only one here – you’ll also be well located for places like Windermere, Fell Foot Park and Grizedale Forest. You can pick up walking trails from right by the site, or head out for days of mountain biking, horse riding and watersports nearby. If that all sounds a bit active, it’s good to know you’ll have options for gentler days, perhaps visiting historic sites like Brantwood, taking the kids to the Lakes Aquarium or riding the heritage trains of Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. Your base for all this will be a spacious pop-up site that welcomes families, couples, solo travellers and dog owners and has simple facilities in the form of portable toilets and a drinking water supply. Barbecues and campfires are permitted; pick up supplies at the shops in Ulverston, 15 minutes’ drive away. Alternatively, take yourselves off to the pub 10 minutes’ drive away for great meals and local ales.

Liked Absolutely beautiful camping space. Drinking water access, clean porter loo’s and a little shop! Easy access to the water, perfect for paddle boarding/kayaking and walks. We will absolutely come back.
Staff are friendly, regularly present on site cleaning etc.

Liked Nice site. Basic, but had porta loos and running water. Nice easy access to the lake too.

Disliked Some moron flying a drone around all day whilst people are dressing and undressing for watersports.

Liked Great little campsite. Owners came to check that we were ok and happy. We were aware before coming that there was no showers so that didn’t bother us at all. Had a great couple of nights.

Liked This camping is on caniston lake and it is very close to Ulverston. The site was super quiet and toilets were kept clean often. It was such a lovely place to be in

Disliked The owners daughter came intoxicated to the camp site and I thought it was very inappropriate for a camping with kids she was definitely on drugs of some sort and looked like a homeless person and it was really not a place for her to be there.

From the manager: Hi I’m very sorry but that was NOT my daughter it was a 38 year old woman who was staying with her partner in a campervan they had a domestic and she was extremely drunk and clearly had some mental health issues I intercepted her as she was being a pest to other guests we organised her friends to come and get her and my husband drove her off site to meet up with them as she was extremely aggressive I had never met this woman before and hope to never meet her again I’m sorry that this woman has upset you but believe me you won’t be anywhere near as upset as my 14 and 18 year old daughters are having read on a public forum that one of them is a drug addict. Absolutely fuming that someone would post something so horrible about a situation they knew nothing about what is it they say “be kind”

Walks and watersports in the immediate area may fill much of your time here, but it’s worth exploring further afield too if you can. Walkers can head out on more trails at National Trust - Fell Foot (20 minutes’ drive), take a challenging climb up The Old Man of Coniston (25 minutes) or opt for a more easygoing stroll at Grizedale Forest (35 minutes). Grizedale is also home to a Go Ape adventure park (25 minutes) for those who’d like to swoop through the treetops. Other ways to see some of the scenery include rides on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (15 minutes) and cruises on the National Trust’s steam yacht gondola (25 minutes). Animal-mad kids are likely to enjoy trips to the Lakes Aquarium and Predator Park – Wolf Experiences (both 20 minutes).
