What a wonderful spot for an outdoor break in the Lake District National Park. As the name suggests, Allan Tarn Escapes is right next to the lake of the same name (which also appeared in ‘Swallows and Amazons’ as Octopus Lagoon). Being right by the water makes this a peaceful and scenic site, and also a very convenient one for those who’d like to do a bit of wild swimming, kayaking or paddleboarding during their stay. You can launch directly onto the water from here and make your way up the river to get out onto Coniston Water for a full day of exploring. That’s the closest attraction, but it’s far from the only one here – you’ll also be well located for places like Windermere, Fell Foot Park and Grizedale Forest. You can pick up walking trails from right by the site, or head out for days of mountain biking, horse riding and watersports nearby. If that all sounds a bit active, it’s good to know you’ll have options for gentler days, perhaps visiting historic sites like Brantwood, taking the kids to the Lakes Aquarium or riding the heritage trains of Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. Your base for all this will be a spacious pop-up site that welcomes families, couples, solo travellers and dog owners and has simple facilities in the form of portable toilets and a drinking water supply. Barbecues and campfires are permitted; pick up supplies at the shops in Ulverston, 15 minutes’ drive away. Alternatively, take yourselves off to the pub 10 minutes’ drive away for great meals and local ales.

Magnifique camping paisible avec accès direct à un lac pour la baignade et le paddle, menant au lac Coniston. Les propriétaires sont accueillants, les installations propres et le paysage sublime. Le site est bien entretenu, avec espace pour feux et barbecues. Manque de douches et quelques campeurs irrespectueux notés. Route d'accès étroite et toilettes parfois insuffisantes.

A aimé The owner of the site Dan is absolutely lovely - very friendly, let us know about nice local walks, pub, shop and couldn’t do enough for us. Lovely views from all round site with clean portaloo’s, very quiet and peaceful and being able to get straight out onto the water with the paddleboards was brilliant. We’ll definitely be back, thanks Dan for making our stay so enjoyable in such a beautiful place

A aimé Lovely quiet site (although might just have been the weekend we stayed!) with direct access to the water. No showers but there are very clean portaloos and also access to drinking water. Owners are lovely and were very kind and accommodating when it came to us arriving later than expected. Would stay again!

A aimé Staff were more than welcoming and was there for every need we had! This was our second stay this month because we enjoyed the first so much. Very easy access to the lake and a nice long paddle to cat island and back

A aimé Friendly and welcoming host, access directly to the Tarn for swimming/kayaking/SUP etc and the cleanest portaloos I've ever seen! Brilliant traditional pub about a mile away and close to Coniston Water. Don't forget cash for the honesty horsebox!

A aimé Lovely large site with lake access. Good phone signal, little pop up shop across the road and pub 5 mins drive away. Ice cream van also comes onto site and the ice creams are amazing! Great value for money and amazing location right on Coniston. Peaceful site with loads of of space. Very friendly owner who welcomed us on site, we had a brilliant time and will defo visit again.

A aimé Location was fantastic, although basic it still had fresh water and clean toilets.

N'a pas aimé One and only dislike, dogs were aloud to roam free. Not everyone likes dogs and having a little girl that has been attacked by a so called friendly dog in the past it did put me and her on edge.

A aimé Lovely welcome from the lady that owns the land, toilet facilities kept clean and well stocked. Great place for anyone wanting to get out the water. Horse trailer over the road stocked with basic essentials, cash only honesty box.

Attractions à proximité

Walks and watersports in the immediate area may fill much of your time here, but it’s worth exploring further afield too if you can. Walkers can head out on more trails at National Trust - Fell Foot (20 minutes’ drive), take a challenging climb up The Old Man of Coniston (25 minutes) or opt for a more easygoing stroll at Grizedale Forest (35 minutes). Grizedale is also home to a Go Ape adventure park (25 minutes) for those who’d like to swoop through the treetops. Other ways to see some of the scenery include rides on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (15 minutes) and cruises on the National Trust’s steam yacht gondola (25 minutes). Animal-mad kids are likely to enjoy trips to the Lakes Aquarium and Predator Park – Wolf Experiences (both 20 minutes). If art’s more your thing, spend some time at John Ruskin’s former home, Brantwood (15 minutes) before visiting The Ruskin Museum (20 minutes).
