What a wonderful spot for an outdoor break in the Lake District National Park. As the name suggests, Allan Tarn Escapes is right next to the lake of the same name (which also appeared in ‘Swallows and Amazons’ as Octopus Lagoon). Being right by the water makes this a peaceful and scenic site, and also a very convenient one for those who’d like to do a bit of wild swimming, kayaking or paddleboarding during their stay. You can launch directly onto the water from here and make your way up the river to get out onto Coniston Water for a full day of exploring. That’s the closest attraction, but it’s far from the only one here – you’ll also be well located for places like Windermere, Fell Foot Park and Grizedale Forest. You can pick up walking trails from right by the site, or head out for days of mountain biking, horse riding and watersports nearby. If that all sounds a bit active, it’s good to know you’ll have options for gentler days, perhaps visiting historic sites like Brantwood, taking the kids to the Lakes Aquarium or riding the heritage trains of Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. Your base for all this will be a spacious pop-up site that welcomes families, couples, solo travellers and dog owners and has simple facilities in the form of portable toilets and a drinking water supply. Barbecues and campfires are permitted; pick up supplies at the shops in Ulverston, 15 minutes’ drive away. Alternatively, take yourselves off to the pub 10 minutes’ drive away for great meals and local ales.

Em va agradar Great little campsite. Owners came to check that we were ok and happy. We were aware before coming that there was no showers so that didn’t bother us at all. Had a great couple of nights.

Em va agradar Great for access into Allan tarn/coniston water with our canoe. Nice views. Away from any busy roads.

No em va agradar Uneven, but there are flat areas. Portoloos never great but they were clean. Pitch where you like- could be a positive or negative!

Em va agradar Absolutely loved every second. First time camping with my husband and 2 toddlers aged 2&3 and it was beautiful, quiet, loads of portaloo’s cleaned on the hour and included toilet roll and water dispenser next to them with fresh drinking water.

Lake was easily accessible, shallow at the section you get in and it was our first time paddle boarding and kayaking and was amazing place and so comfortable even with 2 toddlers.

Very family feel and owners are on site most of the time I could see them checking people in, clearing up, they were really lovely and helped us with our special requests.

Overall amazing experience and after hiring a tent box for this stay we enjoyed it that much we went home and bought a tent box and plan to come back to this camp site soon!

Em va agradar Excellent ! Came for two nights stayed four. Great access to lake coniston for paddle boards. Great dog walks nearby . Friendly owners. Can’t wait to come back again. Just wish it was open more year round .

Em va agradar We had the best weekend at this campsite. Owners at the gate on arrival are very welcoming and helpful. The portaloos were very clean and we noticed them being cleaned regularly and toilet roll always stocked up and air fresheners supplied. Such a lovely site with amazing views and the lake right on site where you can launch paddle board from. Can tell the grass is well maintained too. Will definitely return here!

No em va agradar It did get a bit busy on our second night and we returned from a walk to someone pitched quite close to us. Which felt a tad less private and a bit noisier at night.

Walks and watersports in the immediate area may fill much of your time here, but it’s worth exploring further afield too if you can. Walkers can head out on more trails at National Trust - Fell Foot (20 minutes’ drive), take a challenging climb up The Old Man of Coniston (25 minutes) or opt for a more easygoing stroll at Grizedale Forest (35 minutes). Grizedale is also home to a Go Ape adventure park (25 minutes) for those who’d like to swoop through the treetops. Other ways to see some of the scenery include rides on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (15 minutes) and cruises on the National Trust’s steam yacht gondola (25 minutes). Animal-mad kids are likely to enjoy trips to the Lakes Aquarium and Predator Park – Wolf Experiences (both 20 minutes). If art’s more your thing, spend some time at John Ruskin’s former home, Brantwood (15 minutes) before visiting The Ruskin Museum (20 minutes).
