  • Simple campsite near the River Lune in the Howgill Fells, Cumbria
  • A 10-minute drive to Sedbergh; 25 minutes to Kendal
  • Next to the Dales Way walking trail within the Yorkshire Dales
Beck Foot Campsite is a back-to-basics Cumbria campsite tucked away within the Howgill Fells and yet handily accessible from the M6 (at junction 37 or 38). This spot is just on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with the Lake District not far off either. That means plenty of walks, bike rides and other outdoor antics to be had nearby – and heaps of gorgeous scenery to admire as you explore. Not that you have to go all that far from the site to experience splendid views… this is a place that’s next to the Dales Way walking trail and close to the River Lune for some pretty watery scenery. Town time is close by too, when you want it – head south to Sedbergh with a drive of 10 minutes to explore England’s official Book Town, pick up snacks in its deli and ice cream parlour, source supplies at the independent shops or settle in for meals in pubs and restaurants. The famed farm shop at Tebay services is about a 15-minute drive north too, for further local nibbles. Pitches here are of a good size, with space for parking and setting up a barbecue. Portable toilets are provided and there’s a cold water supply (but please note it’s not suitable for drinking; you're welcome to ask the owners to fill up bottles or canisters with water from the house for you). Dogs are welcome as long as you keep them in sight or on a lead at all times. Please note that, as this is a simple site, there are no waste disposal facilities, so you’ll be asked to take rubbish away with you (ideally to the local recycling point in Sedbergh if possible).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The farmer was very accommodating with us as we were late on site due to road closures and delays and got slightly lost in the dark so he gave us directions. Beautiful views to wake up to in the morning. Exactly what we needed as our stop off before heading further on. Has toilets and water dispenser for washing there. Farmer came and checked in with us on the morning to make sure we were all ok which was very sweet. Basic camping site but perfect for people like us that enjoy wild camping!

Nice place, fair price.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Views were nice, low price and toilets on site.

Disliked Farmer was abit funny with us being young in my opinion. Told us off for having a fire, even tho the post states fires are allowed, he did kindly lend us a fire pit tho. On the last day of our trip he decided to come over and shout at us for being messy, we were just starting out packup and were just about to put our rubbish in bins, we told him this and he said we were arguing with him and told us to eff off and get off his site before 10am

Facilities weren't the greatest but can't really complain for the low price.

Other than our bad experience with the owner, the place was lovely, can't say I don't recommend it as long as you stay on his good side because he was lovely at first.

From the manager: Well if you behave and don’t make a mess and don’t take all my stones of the wall to make a fire I wouldn’t of said anything plus the fact you were arguing all night and keeping the other campers awake so that’s why I asked you to leave show some respect to other people and the country side we do not tolerate bad behaviour on our site and buy the way camp fire are aloud but we always ask you to keep them of the ground

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The campsite is secluded and quiet.

Disliked Having no drinking water available on site makes life harder for anyone trekking. (That said, I was offered some water on arrival, but the site did not advertise that this would be a possibility.)

Fantastic back to basics, dark skies campsite.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The simple facilities are well maintained by the friendly and helpful farmer.
The site is surrounded by stunning views and great hill walks.
Very big pitches with parking space combined.
Livestock in adjacent fields, it's a brilliant feeling of being off grid, similar to wild camping but with the benefit of a good signal for your mobile.
The town of Sedbergh is a short drive away with shops, pubs and a great tourist information office.
Perfect peace and quiet.
Camping at it's best!

Liked view is spectacular, loved the remoteness but also closeness of village

Disliked Only 2 portaloos which by the time more people arrived were pretty disgusting after the first day and no one cleaned them either so by day 2, we didn't even want to use them either. No shower as advertised as out of order apparently which was pretty disappointing after 2 days but we survived. We knew the water was not drinkable so were prepared but there wasn't even a sink in the portaloo working either.
We're all pretty hardy but there are limits and no, I didn't want to drive to Tebay services for a shower. Just let me know in advance that is what is to be expected!
We thought £25 per night for parking in a field was probably a bit much considering animal excrement everywhere and other campsites are not much more with lovely facilities.
Would likely not book again and this is sad as the view really is spectacular and on the clear night it was like dark skies with so many stars.
Please either sort out the facilities or let people know it's practically wild camping!

From the manager: Sorry it wasn’t up to you expectations I do try my best to please everyone regarding the shower it not on the website that we have one and the toilet were cleaned twice the following day and were clean so a really don’t know were your comeing from

Lovely quiet site, level field, basic facilities, outstanding views.

Liked Really lovely, quiet site! Outstanding views all around the field. You are completely immersed in the countryside 😊. Myself and my dog loved it. Farmer came round to check all was good, then left us to the peace and quiet.
Two portaloos and a big tank of water on site. I only wanted basic and this is perfect.
