Beck Foot Campsite is a back-to-basics Cumbria campsite tucked away within the Howgill Fells and yet handily accessible from the M6 (at junction 37 or 38). This spot is just on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with the Lake District not far off either. That means plenty of walks, bike rides and other outdoor antics to be had nearby – and heaps of gorgeous scenery to admire as you explore. Not that you have to go all that far from the site to experience splendid views… this is a place that’s next to the Dales Way walking trail and close to the River Lune for some pretty watery scenery. Town time is close by too, when you want it – head south to Sedbergh with a drive of 10 minutes to explore England’s official Book Town, pick up snacks in its deli and ice cream parlour, source supplies at the independent shops or settle in for meals in pubs and restaurants. The famed farm shop at Tebay services is about a 15-minute drive north too for further local nibbles. Pitches here are of a good size, with space for parking and setting up a barbecue. Portaloos are provided and there’s a cold water supply (but please note it’s not suitable for drinking). Dogs are welcome as long as you keep them in sight or on a lead at all times. Please note that as this is a simple site there are no waste disposal facilities, so you’ll be asked to take rubbish away with you (ideally to the local recycling point in Sedbergh if possible).

A aimé I recently spent two nights at this small countryside campsite, and it turned out to be a wonderfully relaxing break. The facilities were very basic — just two portaloos and a water point — but the simplicity actually added to the charm. The views were stunning from every angle, and being surrounded by a working farm made the stay feel authentic and peaceful.

The farmer was incredibly friendly and even offered my wife and me fresh drinking water, as there isn’t normally any available on-site. That small gesture made a big difference and really highlighted the welcoming atmosphere.

Despite the poor weather, we loved being out in nature, enjoying the animals and the quiet surroundings. It was a cheap, calming getaway, and we’d happily return for another stay.

Emplacement van sur herbe sans électricité

A aimé This is a prime example of an establishment that wants money for nothing and does not care about holiday makers or overnight campers at all.
I arrived at approximately 7.30 pm. Simple campsite on first impression …. Two very old porta loos. A huge white water vat with a sign saying “not drinking water” - hose pipe from it. No handwashing facilities. No Pot washing facilities. No drinking water. I initially thought I could cope with all that as that was wha was advertised however….
Inspection of port-a loos revealed disgusting dried stuck on poo. Flush didn’t work. No hand sanitiser. No toilet roll. Toilets had not been cleaned in weeks… I feel I could not stay and use filthy toilet with not hand washing facilities either. …
I rang the farmer who was in a farmhouse about 400 metre down a steep hill from campsite. I explained I knew no showers on site but toilets were so dirty I could not possibly use in that condition. I expected th farmer to say “ sorry I’ll be up to sort it ASAP” but the Farmer unleashed on me. Accusing me of being aggressive toward him. Said he was “sick of the campsite and was not coming to clean toilets” he said “I’ve been at work all day I’m not walking up the hill to look at toilets” I asked him he could provide me with cleaning material and gloves and I’d clean the toilets. He got even more angry and said “do you want your money back?” I said I would. on. At this point I was in tears. Had driven 4 hours and I was tired and shaken up with him attitude.
I walked down to the farm house for my refund. I knocked on the door. The farmer (a large man tall and well built) answered. He threw the money at me. Two £20 notes and ten pounds in small change. I had to get on my hands and knees to retrieve it all. He shouted “what do you expect for £20 a night”
At this point I just wanted to get off the site away from him.
He frightened me.
This campsite should be avoided at all cost. Not child friendly. Not friendly at all . Not worth £20 at all!
Not once have I stayed in a campsite that does not have fresh drinking water.
I wish I had taken photos but I just wanted to get out the vicinity as soon as I could. I actually feared for my safety.
I will be reporting this incident.
I would hate anyone to experience the same treatment.
The location is beautiful -
This site could be a gem. Clean th toilets. Provide hand wash near the water vat. Provide each customer with a large bottle of of drinking water from your farmhouse. Provide small pot washing bowl. Little things like that make all difference.

A aimé Amazing views!
BBQs and fires allowed.

N'a pas aimé Very narrow bridge which barely wide enough for a ford transit, when following Sat nav from motorway heading north.
£20 seems a lot for a basic portaloo.

A aimé Very basic, but close to the motorway which was perfect for what we wanted.

N'a pas aimé Toilets weren't very pleasant, we were only here one night so it wasn't too big of an issue.

Recommanderait à des amis Séjournerait à nouveau

Réponse du gestionnaire : Only a basic site can’t really do any more than what we are doing regarding the toilets we clean them all the time don’t really know what else we can do if someone just been and left it a mess and I haven’t just checked it can be we do try our best end of the day they are portable loos there not like festival toilets

Would recommend for a short stay (1-3 days) but anything longer.

Emplacement pour tente sur herbe sans électricité

A aimé The views were amazing and the overall vibe were spectacular in the day. They provide mini camp fires which was really nice when it gets a bug chillier when the sun is setting (not enough for each camp though). They also seemed to provide toilet paper in the porta-loos but not sure if that is always there so we brought our own. We called the owners quite late at night due to us missing the entrance times as stated but they were very helpful and understanding.

N'a pas aimé The way to get there was a little tricky as there are two routes and one of them no big cars would be able to get through (very small and weak bridge) and the other was very tight roads where meeting cars coming the other way would be difficult. They only have porta-loos on sight so isn’t the nicest (especially as a girl at night) and there are no sinks or showers - they have a big tank of water but it is freezing and doesn’t come out very well. There are also no bins so any rubbish you collect along the way has to get back in your car to find a bin on the way out. Signal is also not amazing out there if anyone was to need it.

Recommanderait à des amis Séjournerait à nouveau

Réponse du gestionnaire : Regarding the bins we took them away people were abusing it with putting chairs and tents in it and I know the roads are narrow but we get lorries up no problem and mobile phones signal it should be good the mast is only next door you can see it

did exactly what it said cheep and cheerful toilets were clean

A aimé Great views

N'a pas aimé Roads leading to the site are very, very narrow. The site itself only has two, old portaloos that weren’t very clean and didn’t flush very well. There was also a big plastic crate with water, which you couldn’t drink. If you wanted drinking water you had to go to the main house, a drive not a walk, to get some. I was there with my eldest son, youngest daughter and his daughter. Neither of us would allow the girls any where near the toilets.
The roads leading to any of the walks mentioned are very narrow!
The site is NOT child friendly.

Recommanderait à des amis Séjournerait à nouveau

Réponse du gestionnaire : Sorry it wasn’t up to your expectations the toilets were clean just been cleaned actually so I don’t know what you mean and we can supply freshwater from the house why don’t you instead of putting bad reviews talk to me directly in stead of saying every thing is ok then I ask and the toilets do flush ok
