  • Simple campsite near the River Lune in the Howgill Fells, Cumbria
  • A 10-minute drive to Sedbergh; 25 minutes to Kendal
  • Next to the Dales Way walking trail within the Yorkshire Dales
Beck Foot Campsite is a back-to-basics Cumbria campsite tucked away within the Howgill Fells and yet handily accessible from the M6 (at junction 37 or 38). This spot is just on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with the Lake District not far off either. That means plenty of walks, bike rides and other outdoor antics to be had nearby – and heaps of gorgeous scenery to admire as you explore. Not that you have to go all that far from the site to experience splendid views… this is a place that’s next to the Dales Way walking trail and close to the River Lune for some pretty watery scenery. Town time is close by too, when you want it – head south to Sedbergh with a drive of 10 minutes to explore England’s official Book Town, pick up snacks in its deli and ice cream parlour, source supplies at the independent shops or settle in for meals in pubs and restaurants. The famed farm shop at Tebay services is about a 15-minute drive north too for further local nibbles. Pitches here are of a good size, with space for parking and setting up a barbecue. Portaloos are provided and there’s a cold water supply (but please note it’s not suitable for drinking). Dogs are welcome as long as you keep them in sight or on a lead at all times. Please note that as this is a simple site there are no waste disposal facilities, so you’ll be asked to take rubbish away with you (ideally to the local recycling point in Sedbergh if possible).

What customers say

A peaceful, no-frills site with amazing views, perfect for a quiet getaway or wild camping. Narrow access roads, one with a tight bridge. Portaloos are basic; opinions on cleanliness vary. No constant drinking water, though the farmer may offer some. Fires/BBQs okay. Owners generally praised for scenery and helpfulness.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Amazing views!
BBQs and fires allowed.

Disliked Very narrow bridge which barely wide enough for a ford transit, when following Sat nav from motorway heading north.
£20 seems a lot for a basic portaloo.

Recommend to friends Visit again

Would recommend for a short stay (1-3 days) but anything longer.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The views were amazing and the overall vibe were spectacular in the day. They provide mini camp fires which was really nice when it gets a bug chillier when the sun is setting (not enough for each camp though). They also seemed to provide toilet paper in the porta-loos but not sure if that is always there so we brought our own. We called the owners quite late at night due to us missing the entrance times as stated but they were very helpful and understanding.

Disliked The way to get there was a little tricky as there are two routes and one of them no big cars would be able to get through (very small and weak bridge) and the other was very tight roads where meeting cars coming the other way would be difficult. They only have porta-loos on sight so isn’t the nicest (especially as a girl at night) and there are no sinks or showers - they have a big tank of water but it is freezing and doesn’t come out very well. There are also no bins so any rubbish you collect along the way has to get back in your car to find a bin on the way out. Signal is also not amazing out there if anyone was to need it.

From the manager: Regarding the bins we took them away people were abusing it with putting chairs and tents in it and I know the roads are narrow but we get lorries up no problem and mobile phones signal it should be good the mast is only next door you can see it

did exactly what it said cheep and cheerful toilets were clean

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great views

Disliked Roads leading to the site are very, very narrow. The site itself only has two, old portaloos that weren’t very clean and didn’t flush very well. There was also a big plastic crate with water, which you couldn’t drink. If you wanted drinking water you had to go to the main house, a drive not a walk, to get some. I was there with my eldest son, youngest daughter and his daughter. Neither of us would allow the girls any where near the toilets.
The roads leading to any of the walks mentioned are very narrow!
The site is NOT child friendly.

From the manager: Sorry it wasn’t up to your expectations the toilets were clean just been cleaned actually so I don’t know what you mean and we can supply freshwater from the house why don’t you instead of putting bad reviews talk to me directly in stead of saying every thing is ok then I ask and the toilets do flush ok
