  • Luxury pods at a family farm in the western Lake District
  • A 15-minute drive to Seascale beach; half an hour to Scafell Pike
  • Ensuite shower room, mini kitchen and barbecue/firepit for each pod
It’s very much a family affair at Strudda Bank Pod Paddock – there are three generations of the same family now living and working at this traditional hill beef and sheep farm on the western edge of the Lake District. A quick look at the map and pictures will give you a clue as to why they’re all so content in this location, and why they’re keen to share it with guests. The farm is close to Ennerdale, which is one of the Lake District’s wilder and less visited areas, and it’s also only about 15 minutes’ drive from the beach at Seascale. Popular spots like Wast Water and Scafell Pike can be reached with a drive of half an hour or so, but you’ll also be able to seek out much quieter areas close to the farm. Staying here is a thoroughly rural experience – you’ll have gorgeous views over the Calder Valley and your neighbours will be the 100 cows and 1000 hill sheep that live on the farm. The accommodation is far from rustic though: these are luxuriously appointed wooden pods, each with comfy beds (a double, a bunk bed and a small double sofa bed), underfloor heating, an ensuite shower room and a mini kitchen (with hob, microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle). To make life nice and easy, lots of extras are provided here, including all bedding and towels, plus all crockery, utensils and other kitchen kit. You’ll have a dining table and chairs for indoor meals, along with a firepit/barbecue and picnic beach out on the deck for alfresco evenings.

Liked: We loved our stay at Strudda Bank Farm. The pods are beautiful, clean and plenty big enough for our family of 5. We loved our tour of the farm with Farmer Kev and feeding the baby lambs. We will definitely visiting again!!

Swaledale Shelter camping pod

Liked: The hosts are great and let us watch lambing and talked to us about farming life. So many great beaches which are dog friendly. The pod is really nice and has pretty much everything you'll need. Great little park and some goal posts for the kids to play around on.

Disliked: Pillows and bedding could do with an upgrade, but apart from that and the fact we were unlucky with the weather, there wasn't really anything we disliked.

Liked: The pod was great and we enjoyed the firepit for grilling, smores and relaxing by the fire. Our daughter was excited to get to hold a baby chick and help feed the lambs. It was much more than just a place to stay.

Swaledale Shelter camping pod

Liked: We loved everything about this place. The pod was lively and clean. It had everything you would possibly need. farmer Kev took the kids on a tour of the farm and let them hold baby lambs. They collected their own eggs from the chicken coop every morning. We roasted marshmallows on the fire and sat and watched the views. And the peacocks that came to the front door and looked in were beautiful. The kids really enjoyed the playground right in front of the pod aswell. We have already been looking to go again

Herdwick Hideaway camping pod

Liked: The most wonderful stay in such a beautiful location! The pod was perfect, everything you could need for a relaxing stay in the middle of the countryside. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners, they are such lovely people! Staying on the farm was such a wonderful experience, getting to collect our own eggs from the chicken coop and seeing the farmer go about his daily routine feeding the animals, with the best doggy entourage!

Disliked: Nothing!

Liked: Location, superb views with remote site that offers kids a play area whilst avoiding being a commercial feeling site.

Local attractions

You can start exploring the Lake District right from the farm gates – walking trails take you out for riverside strolls or walks through the Calder Valley’s ancient oak woods. Calder Abbey and Monks Bridge packhorse bridge are among the historic structures you might find as you wander. Elsewhere in the Lake District, explore its deepest lake, Wast Water and its highest peak, Scafell Pike (both half an hour’s drive). For other ways to explore, there’s a horse riding centre 15 minutes’ drive away or you could take a ride on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (known locally as La’al Ratty) 20 minutes away. For a change of scenery, head to the coast for a day at Seascale beach (15 minutes’ drive) or try St Bees (20 minutes) where you can walk to the top of St Bees Head before cooling off with an ice cream on the beach. Muncaster Castle (20 minutes) and Whitehaven’s harbour and Rum Story (25 minutes) are worth a trip too.
