It’s very much a family affair at Strudda Bank Pod Paddock – there are three generations of the same family now living and working at this traditional hill beef and sheep farm on the western edge of the Lake District. A quick look at the map and pictures will give you a clue as to why they’re all so content in this location, and why they’re keen to share it with guests. The farm is close to Ennerdale, which is one of the Lake District’s wilder and less visited areas, and it’s also only about 15 minutes’ drive from the beach at Seascale. Popular spots like Wast Water and Scafell Pike can be reached with a drive of half an hour or so, but you’ll also be able to seek out much quieter areas close to the farm. Staying here is a thoroughly rural experience – you’ll have gorgeous views over the Calder Valley and your neighbours will be the 100 cows and 1000 hill sheep that live on the farm. The accommodation is far from rustic though: these are luxuriously appointed wooden pods, each with comfy beds (a double, a bunk bed and a small double sofa bed), underfloor heating, an ensuite shower room and a mini kitchen (with hob, microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle). To make life nice and easy, lots of extras are provided here, including all bedding and towels, plus all crockery, utensils and other kitchen kit. You’ll have a dining table and chairs for indoor meals, along with a firepit/barbecue and picnic beach out on the deck for alfresco evenings.

Enjoyed the animals and the owners were happy to share information about them which was very interesting.
They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and even gave us some lovely fresh eggs to bring home.

Gostou This is exactly the kind of campsite you hope to find but rarely do. Small, peaceful, and genuinely welcoming, it’s perfect if you want to escape the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed stay. The hardstanding pitches with electric hookups were spot on for our roof tent, well maintained and thoughtfully set up. The honesty shop was a brilliant touch!

Although a working farm It’s also dog-friendly and the owners couldn’t have been more approachable. The whole place has a calm, tucked-away feel that makes it a real hidden gem in West Cumbria. We’ll definitely be back.

Gostou We loved how gorgeous everything was, the space was well set out and comfortable for us all, the outside area was great for our daughter and we loved getting to see all the animals, it was a perfect weekend.
The pod was really clean and we had everything we needed.

Gostou Quiet site, sea view, pitch right next to the goat pen which was great, and a couple of Emu's to add to the rest of the animals. Owners are very friendly, chatty people. Will definitely be back.

Gostou Absolutely loved it here, so quiet and peaceful, lovely play area for the kids, honesty shop and beautiful views. Farmer came and brought us down to see the sheep and the cows on his quad bike, amazing experience.

Gostou Loved the site! Had everything we needed, the Campervan pitches were level and had electric hook up, fantastic views as far as Scotland and over to the isle of Mann. The toilets were clean in a warm cabin and there were tables to sit at should you wish and a little honesty shop (great as we had misplaced our toothpaste), there was a playground which was great if you had kids and then there were the surrounding animals! Emus, Pygmy goats, chickens, sheep, lambs, cows all waiting to welcome you.
The family were amazing and couldn’t do enough for us! Super welcoming and friendly and really interesting and fun to talk to about their farm. Farmer Kev even took us on a tour on the back of his quad bike to feed the cows and to show us the view on top of the fells. We cannot wait to buy your super children’s book when it is available Farmer Kev!
Thank you so much, we hope to visit again soon!

You can start exploring the Lake District right from the farm gates – walking trails take you out for riverside strolls or walks through the Calder Valley’s ancient oak woods. Calder Abbey and Monks Bridge packhorse bridge are among the historic structures you might find as you wander. ​ Elsewhere in the Lake District, explore its deepest lake, Wast Water and its highest peak, Scafell Pike (both half an hour’s drive). For other ways to explore, there’s a horse riding centre 15 minutes’ drive away or you could take a ride on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (known locally as La’al Ratty) 20 minutes away. ​For a change of scenery, head to the coast for a day at Seascale beach (15 minutes’ drive) or try St Bees (20 minutes) where you can walk to the top of St Bees Head before cooling off with an ice cream on the beach. Muncaster Castle (20 minutes) and Whitehaven’s harbour and Rum Story (25 minutes) are worth a trip too.
