General

  • Peaceful site for pod, tent and van dwellers
  • On-site pub converted from a 17th-century barn
  • Outdoor playground and indoor games room available for kids

Guests here will be lulled by the lovely views of Ullswater at The Quiet Site, which huddles in scenic seclusion in the fells above a lake.

You’ll find a tiptop selection of facilities here, including family-sized bathrooms, an on-site shop and a large playground, but the thing that really sets The Quiet Site apart is its pub: dictionary dude Samuel Johnson was surely thinking of the Quiet Bar when he stated, 'There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or inn.'

Not only is it a splendid 17th-century barn with an absurdly well-provisioned cellar, but it has its own games room (with table football, pool, air hockey, and table tennis), and – for the ultimate in parental pleasure – an upstairs playhouse and softplay centre for the kids.

We stayed here with our three older children and our dog during May bank holiday. The site was lovely. It seemed to be fully booked but never felt crowded and no queues for showers or toilets. The facilities are excellent and the staff are friendly and welcoming. They seem to have though of everything here! Our pitch was level and well maintained with a great view over Ullswater. The wifi worked perfectly which was popular with the children, and the campsite rules about noise were adhered to so it was quiet at night. We all had breakfast from the on site food van which was great. We will definitely be back soon.

    Disliked:

An additional toilet block at the top of the site would be very welcome! I would also welcome a bit more food for sale in the shop.

The site offers views, views and epic views.
Oh and the pitches, ensure you have plenty of hard ground pegs you will need them.
we were on the highest point so had a good up hill walk to return from the shower block and toilets, so if you are not as mobile, let them know.
The showers are clean and loads of hot water.
Plenty of options for family's or disabled needing larger shower facilities.

If you like to stay up past 10pm, this is not the site for you. 23/04/2019

The site is in a beautiful location, the views are breathtaking.

The pub on site has some lovely ales and is quite relaxed.

    Disliked:

Firstly, the site was over crowded, I appreciate that it was school holidays and the Easter bank holidays however, the pitches are way too close together. I am guessing to accommodate as many people as possible.

The pods are only suitable for 2 adults we struggled to comfortably sleep 2 adults and a 3-year-old in them, they are the smallest pods we have ever stayed in.

Secondly the toilet and shower blocks are based at the bottom of the site, (which is situated on a hill), this meant every time you needed to use the bathrooms it was a lengthy trip up and down a hill. In my opinion the site needs a second bathroom facility at the top of the site.

Thirdly this is not a site if you have young children, other older campers on the site are intolerant of children running around and encroaching on 'their pitch' to retrieve a ball.

And Finally!! On our first night we were told at 10pm that we could be heard across the site(?). However, there was only a few of us sat around chatting having a drink and enjoying the beautiful evening.

On our final night at 10.20pm, there were 3 adults and one small child attending to a 6-year-old who had contacted conjunctivitis (not a funny situation and quite distressing for the little one in question). We were rudely told by the camp owner that we were making too much noise and that he could hear us laughing across the site. I was quick to inform him that we were attending to a poorly child and there was NOTHING FUNNY about the situation and therefore this could not have been us. Again, the individual was unsympathetic toward the situation and told us to disperse quickly.

It was a beautiful night and my husband and I decided to sit on the terrace of our pod and enjoy the stars and moon, we had our 3 year old asleep with us, and once again we were told that it was time to finish up and retire for the night. Two friends decided to join us for a drink at approximately 11.20pm after leaving the onsite pub, again we were told that it was late, and we had to retire for the night(!). As my husband when to use the toilet he was again confronted being told that we were making to much noise. My husband asked the manager to just be quite so he could listen to the noise to which he pointed out there was NONE.

If you want to stay up after 10pm and have a drink outside your tent / pod / caravan you will constantly be told that you need to retire to your bed!!

From the manager...

Running The Quiet Site is usually a joy. World class location, lovely customers, sustainable facilities and the best team to work with. Very occasionally we are sent a customers, or in this case a group of customers (who booked on independently to circumnavigate the NO GROUPS rule) to test us. Needless to say, this group did not like being asked politely to ‘Keep it Quiet’. The details are fairly standard for a group being asked Lower it’s noise. Needless to stay it usually ends in a negative review.
We wish the members of this party well and hope they find a campsite more suited to its needs.
Daniel

Directions

Travelling from the M6, Junction 40 (at Penrith)
Take the A66, signposted Keswick, for 1 mile and then take the A592 signposted Ullswater for 4 miles. Turn right when you see the lake in front of you, still on the A592, signposted Windermere. After approximately 1 mile, you will see the Brackenrigg Inn on your right-hand side; there is a road to the right directly after the Inn. Drive up here for 1.5 miles. You will see The Quiet Site on the right-hand side. Turn right and book in at the shop.

If your caravan or motorhome is very large, please ignore the Brackenrigg Inn turn. Instead, continue on to the next right turn, which is by the telephone box. Turn right here and follow the lane up the hill past the church and take the first turn on the right. The site is on the left.

Local attractions

This being the Lake District, there are oodles of things to do nearby: walks and bike rides; pony trekking; steam trains to steam boats, paddling and rowing, and pretty much everything water-based in between. Landlubbers of a historical bent will find no shortage of castles, Roman forts and stately homes to tempt them.

The locals laugh in the face of drizzly days (well, they see quite a few) and have set up a vast array of coping mechanisms: visit one of the multifarious museums in the area, which feature everything from James Bond to pencils, or perhaps take a trip to an aquarium, Ice Age caverns filled with stalactites, or even a slate mine.
