General

  • Peaceful campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a playground area and park

It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields and with the Pennine Fells as a beaut backdrop – and is part of the Lazonby Swimming Pool site for lazy dips. The river's there if you want to fish (get a permit at Lazonby post office or at the pool kiosk) and the northern lakes are 15 miles away.

Lazonby is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has two pubs, a well-stocked and open daily supermarket with post office and ATM, two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald.

Toilets and solar-powered showers are in the swimming pool buildings about two hundred metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool.

The pool is open daily when the campsite is and heated to 26ºC; lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/café selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 30/04 and 18/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Excellent weekend was had by all on this truly international Camp Site.

There was a Dutch Party staying for a local wedding.
An Austrailian couple cycling from Lands End to John O Groats.
As well as some other families form the North East who were there for the pool Closing Party.

We all had a brilliant time and will be back for the Big Splash (Pool Opening) next Year.

Site was a little soft under foot on Friday but all the vehicles got off on Sunday. It is cumbria so can rain a little.

With the local play park next to the canp site this is a excellent place for families with young children.

We were able to pitch where we wanted, overlooking the river, very peaceful site, but not during school holidays , nice walks straight from site, shop and pub easy walking distance, also mainline station, which is great if you don't have a car, 2 great pubs ,a mile away in next village. Very pleasant lady ,who gave us all the info.

    Disliked:

The walk to showers and toilets,in the swimming pool building, down the dark muddy track.

Loved the peace away from all traffic and noise. A community run site tucked away next to the beautiful river eden in the aptly named eden valley and away from houses. A fantastic spot for a relaxing trip away with the family. Toilets and showers perfect (included a mop to clear away yr footprint for the next happy camper). A fantastic heated outdoor pool on the doorstep with attentive and knowledgable volunteers from the local community.

Facilities. Having a swimming pool and great playground made this a great place to stay with a young child. All the staff were very friendly and the site itself had clean showers and toilets as well as hot running water. Very secluded but very handy CO-OP nearby.

    The location, lakes are beautiful.

    Disliked:

Toilet block needs refurbishment and the walk up to the toilet block is dark and goes right up to the main road. I didn't feel save allowing the kids to go up there after dark. Thank goodness for our portaloo!!!!
Showers were scalding hot for first two days then when we brought this up instead of turning down the temperature through a thermostat regulater the quantity of hot water was turned down so it ran out !
We are used to much smarter sites I suppose and have been spoilt.

Directions

Lazonby campsite is situated off the B6413, 4 miles from the A6 at Plumpton and 7 miles from the M6- junction 41.

Travelling North from Penrith on the A6, turn right onto the B6413 signposted Lazonby. Follow the signs to the swimming pool, located on the far side of Lazonby. Follow the road through the centre of the village heading towards Kirkoswald. Pass the local school and playing fields on your right and then as you come to a sharp left-hand bend you will find the swimming pool and entrance to the campsite on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct: have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic.

The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car.

Withnail and I's destination Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has many shops, supermarkets and services; go here too for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, perfect views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs.

And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.

Must see

  • Dalemain Historic House & Gardens (9.6 miles)

  • Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill (8.1 miles)
  • Allen Banks and Staward Gorge (20.8 miles)
