General

  • Peaceful campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a playground area and park

It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields and with the Pennine Fells as a beaut backdrop – and is part of the Lazonby Swimming Pool site for lazy dips. The river's there if you want to fish (get a permit at Lazonby post office or at the pool kiosk) and the northern lakes are 15 miles away.

Lazonby Campsite is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has two pubs, a well-stocked and open daily supermarket with post office and ATM, two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald.

Toilets and solar-powered showers (open throughout the site opening season) are in the swimming pool buildings about two hundred metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool.

And the pool itself? It's open throughout high season and heated to 26ºC, with lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/café selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 09/05 and 13/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Lovely little site next to the river , with lovely walks , the facilities are at the swimming pool and are clean but basic and a little bit far for night time needs but this is a gem of a place and is run by volunteers who are nice and friendly ! There is a coop supermarket back in the village and a couple of pubs or a brisk 20 min walk to the next village theres 2 more pubs with excellent food . Me and my wife loved our stay here would definitely stay again should we visit Cumbria again

Excellent rural location with little light pollution as there are not lights from the pool to the site which is brilliant for looking at the stars.
We stayed for the Pool End of Season Party which was brilliant and the breakfast the pool does on some Sundays during the Season was excellent.
Friendly staff asking how we were and if the site was okay.
We have stayed here a number of occasions and have had a great time and met some very nice people who we sometimes see again at the site.

Volunteers who run this site are heroes without capes! We loved the pool, the park & making great memories with family and friends that didnt break the bank.
Great location, so pretty and peaceful. Look forward to yet another year at this site. Yes its muddy, yes you have to walk a few steps up to the Toilets & Showers - this is camping though!
A fantastic price, and no rules as long as your arm to adhere to.

Absolutley wonderful. Small site close to the river with a brilliant play park and outdoor pool on your doorstep. Its an ideal location for walks by the river & very dog friendly. Staff visted daiky to check water taps and site but werent intrusive. Its so peaceful you feel like you are really out in the countryside but with a short walk to the toilets & showers. The water in the showers & sinks is lovely and hot. We visted twice this summer once in perfect weather and once when it was very rainy. We loved each visit. The rainy time did make the field in parts boggy but there was enough room to avoid this..and expected for camping in Cumbria during a flood warning! There is a lovely community spirit to the place, friendly staff who are always so welcoming at the pool. Our little girl loved the park area and we met with other friendly campers & played rounders togther some evenings. Short walk to the pub, trainstation & coop (which stocks everything you could need). Fabulous stay. We will be back next summer!! Thank you

Booked to stay here as we wanted somewhere quiet and peaceful, and that’s exactly what we got.
Lovely little campsite, with everything close by. Scenery was lovely, especially along the river.
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great when we stayed, causing a lot of the area to become water logged, however that didn’t stop us having a lovely time away.
Staff at the pool were all very lovely and always said hello when we popped up to use the facilities.

    Disliked:

the path to the shower/ toilet blocks not very well lit up at night, which made me feel unsafe when going alone.

    Playground for children

    Disliked:

Pitches shut off which we weren’t aware of and ended up setting up in a camper and spot when they had gone out for the day as restricted due to really uneven ground and flooded areas. Electric point over 8 ft in the air with a step between the whole field which we didn’t know so picture a 3 hour drive with 2 kids then at 8.30pm having to lift each other up to get to the electric point. Not one person did we see all weekend to greet us or give any information, may as well of not even paid. Toilets up a long unlit path close to roadside locked with a padlock, very dated and floor muddy. Ended up washing hair in sink and wasn’t sure on the showers. Kids were looking forward to pool but was only open on 1 day the day we were leaving and the girl opening up didn’t say one word to us. Really disappointed after reading reviews we honestly thought we had come to the wrong place when we pulled up. Nothing more than a small boggy field with not one light on, you would camp in when you were 15.

From the manager...

o As a small charity manned by volunteers, we are sorry that the customer was unhappy with their visit. We appreciate that this is their personal view, which we have to weigh up with other reviews, many of which recently have been 10/10 and one of those stayed the same weekend as the customer.
o 3 pitches were shut off in a flooded area & taken off pitchup
o 7 pitches available for the 7 bookings that weekend in an area of the site that was fairly even and dry.
o Hook ups high to avoid flood risk; step ladders provided
o Staff monitor the site but campers are not always on site when they visit
o Camp site guide given to customers state that Toilet Block is 150 metres away from site and only partially lit- advised to take torch
o We do not wish to provide lighting on a small rural, riverside site. Most campers appreciate the rural nature and unpolluted night skies at the site.
o Floor gets muddy from campers’ muddy footwear; sign asking them to leave footwear at doorway. Cleaned morning & evening. Mop & bucket provided with sign asking campers to mop any excess mud/ water up.
o Showers were recently fitted with new panelling – so not “dated”.
o Appreciate that rest of block may seem dated but we ensure it is cleaned thoroughly twice a day.
o Pool was open every day to the public during the customer’s stay. From 3.30 to 5.30pm Thursday & Friday and from 1pm-5pm on the Saturday.
o We constantly strive to keep the Camp Site and its facilities in as good a condition as possible. The weather is something we cannot control but if any area is unfit for camping we occasionally have to seal those areas off and take those off the pitchup booking system.

Uneven pitches, very muddy/wet as to be expected at this time of year. No one to greet us on arrival which we did expect after reading some of the reviews but we didn’t see anyone all weekend - could’ve had a free stay. The pool was a disappointment only open the day we left so we didn’t have use of that. Dated/unclean toilet & showering facilities especially the floor full of mud & a bucket of filthy water, toilets/showers are up a driveway way which is unlit at night we felt unsafe & had to go in groups for toilet runs. Electric is high off the ground with only a step up to use not sure why this is but not very safe. Overall disappointed with our visit wouldn’t stay again or recommend.

Directions

Lazonby campsite is situated off the B6413, 4 miles from the A6 at Plumpton and 7 miles from the M6- junction 41.

Travelling North from Penrith on the A6, turn right onto the B6413 signposted Lazonby. Follow the signs to the swimming pool, located on the far side of Lazonby. Follow the road through the centre of the village heading towards Kirkoswald. Pass the local school and playing fields on your right and then as you come to a sharp left-hand bend you will find the swimming pool and entrance to the campsite on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct: have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic.

The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car.

Withnail and I's destination Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has many shops, supermarkets and services; go here too for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, perfect views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs.

And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.
