Lazonby Campsite: Large pitches

General

  • Peaceful campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a playground area and park

It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields and with the Pennine Fells as a beaut backdrop – and is part of the Lazonby Swimming Pool site for lazy dips. The river's there if you want to fish (get a permit at Lazonby post office or at the pool kiosk) and the northern lakes are 15 miles away.

Lazonby is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has two pubs, a well-stocked and open daily supermarket with post office and ATM, two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald.

Toilets and solar-powered showers are in the swimming pool buildings about two hundred metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool.

The pool is open daily when the campsite is and heated to 26ºC; lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/café selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

I really liked the location of this site , lovely views and nice walk down the side. it was a small site only 10 pitches. So everyone was friendly and spoke to each other. The pool looked nice but was not able to use this due to covid (although season pass holders were able to use this , which seemed slightly unfair as you didn't get it any cheaper because u wasn't able to use it)

    Disliked:

The noise till 11pm. Only 1 toilet in use (other was out of use) I appreciate the camp is run by volunteers but I felt the toilets and showers needed a really good clean.

Right next to a lovely park for younger children camping. Great walks along the river Eden. Watched the sand martins and barn owl just next to the campsite. Only a short walk away x

    Disliked:

The field was wet and muddy with parts of it cornered off due to people obviously getting stuck. We had a map and it said to keep to pitches but it was hard to know where to pitch in between the muddy bits where people had left muddy holes when trying to get off. It’s only a small field and was pretty full when we got there. The reception was unmanned , we received an email after booking to say the pool wasn’t going to be open so nobody on reception so if a problem you had to catch the cleaner who was there for two hrs on a morning, although I didn’t see her and a number to call but only between certain hrs. Obviously the wet weather caused the mud, nobody’s fault and it looks like the site is voluntary run! I was just nervous when I got there and saw people had struggled to get off the small field and we weren’t sure where we were supposed to go that was not going to be in a difficult spot when leaving. Electric hook up but Max two appliances. Short walk up to the toilets which were fine.

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct: have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic.

The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car.

Withnail and I's destination Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has many shops, supermarkets and services; go here too for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, perfect views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs.

And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.

Must see

  • The Rheged Centre (8.0 miles)
  • Dalemain Historic House & Gardens (9.6 miles)
  • Carlisle Castle (14.0 miles)

  • Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill (8.1 miles)
