Pitches in may 2016

  • Peaceful Cumbria campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a nearby playground area, park and bookable swimming pool
It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields, with the Pennine Fells as its wild backdrop – and Lazonby Campsite is next to the local Lazonby Swimming Pool for easy access to dips as long as you book them in advance online. The river's right there if you want to fish (get a permit at Kirkoswald community shop or at the pool kiosk) and the northern Lakes are 15 miles away. Lazonby is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has a pub, a well-stocked supermarket (open daily with post office and ATM), two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald. Toilets and solar-powered showers are in the swimming pool buildings about 200 metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool. The pool is open daily (and subject to an entry fee) from the early May bank holiday until mid-September and is heated to 24ºC; lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/café selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

What customers say

This small, community-run site is in a lovely riverside spot, lauded for its peaceful vibe, friendly volunteers, and great playground. Guests praise the nearby outdoor pool (reservations advised) and clean facilities. Some note the walk to restrooms, occasional camper noise, and the ground getting muddy in wet weather. Liked Kids playground, separate area from tents, so kids can play with a ball or badminton without warring to hit a car. Outdoor pool, spotless toilets, pub nearby and amazing view. Also kids loved to play in a river.
Also, no signal-big advantage with kids-they stayed outside all the time and enjoyed weather! :)

Liked Great location, close to river views and swimming pool. Luckily we got tickets as visit was planned at short notice. Toilet block was clean. Play park was close to pitch and kids loved it

Disliked Can't guarantee being able to book swimming when using campsite and toilet block was a bit of a walk away.

Liked The people who keep this place running are a joy to be around. Everyone goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome. Will return 5*

Disliked The guy who runs the rafting lets his dog roam about freely, every other dog on site and walking passed are on leads as instructed. Annoyed as he and his black dog are there most days, very hard to make food with an unwelcome dog greeding.

Liked Lovely campsite not much there at the campsite other than your tent and the local pool but we mainly went to test out camping and for walby farm. I liked the idea of the outdoor pool too. I was worried there would be no signal but I had no issues I was with ee and my kids managed to play Roblox / Minecraft at bedtime.
I can’t complain to much as I felt it was a bargain of a price I only paid £40 for a few days with electric but I do advice take your own toilet.

Disliked I disliked we were the only ones here literally. It felt a bit lonely as I was a mum with 3 young kids and dog walkers are always walking by so I felt a bit on edge. I didn’t expect us to be the only ones there literally so I kind of felt like I had just put a tent up in a random field. And I also disliked how far the toilets were from the campsite I’m unsure if this is normal or not but isn’t how I pictured it in my head so I’m glad we had took a camping toilet. But I’ve nothing to compare to as was our first time. It also said the pool was heated but I wouldn’t really of said it was heated my kids were very cold but was still enjoyable and staff were lovely. I would also like to add there is a little coop shop nearby it sold essentials you’d need but I felt it was pricey.

Liked Peaceful, tucked away site with access to a large children’s playground and for a small extra charge use of a heated outdoor swimming pool. All facilities spotlessly clean and good strong showers.

Disliked Need to be aware there is almost no mobile signal anywhere near the site. Wifi available at local pub ‘Midland’ if it is open.

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass over the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct; have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic. The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car. Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has lots of shops, supermarkets and services; travel there also for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, cracking views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs. And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.
