  • Peaceful Cumbria campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a nearby playground area, park and bookable swimming pool
It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields, with the Pennine Fells as its wild backdrop – and Lazonby Campsite is next to the local Lazonby Swimming Pool for easy access to dips as long as you book them in advance online. The river's right there if you want to fish (get a permit at Kirkoswald community shop or at the pool kiosk) and the northern Lakes are 15 miles away. Lazonby is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has a pub, a well-stocked supermarket (open daily with post office and ATM), two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald. Toilets and solar-powered showers are in the swimming pool buildings about 200 metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool. The pool is open daily (and subject to an entry fee) from the early May bank holiday until mid-September and is heated to 24ºC; lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/café selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

Liked: The staff were super friendly, the pool was a great feature. Lovely small site with hot showers and washing up points. Situated right next to the river, with spectacular views to admire and quacking ducks as a wake up call! Will be booking up with more friends for sure!

Liked: I loved the proximity to the river and the easy access to plenty of natural beauty spots close by. Although we didn't use it, we were impressed by the electric hook up that was accessible for every pitch. I also appreciated the daily check ins from the team and the fact that there was always someone available at the pool (in season) to ask any questions.

Disliked: Potentially not the fault of the campsite but we assumed that the pool would be accessible. It was but the available slots were limited which made it hard for our big group. The ability to make a private booking was great but we could've done with booking our slot way in advance so we could plan around it. We didn't end up getting to use the pool which was sad. The site is tucked in between a ring of trees, great for privacy but the height meant that half the site was in constant shade. We pitched in the shade on day one and had to move day two so the tent could dry out. The spot we got was great in the end but it'd have been a rough stay if we weren't able to move.

Liked: Park is great for kids with swimming pool

Disliked: Been coming to this camp site for years now and love it but unfortunately this stay will be our last, there was a few of us who had booked pitches with small children. We had music playing until 9pm then the man who was volunteering that night was very rude to the kids about been on park and to be honest terrified my 5 year old, then came over to our pitches and spoke to us awful in his words “making his life a misery” 😳 bit strong for playing a little music and talking. He then threatened to kick us off the site that might even though we had all had alcohol. Just very very rude and Nasty so for this we won’t be returning to this site.

Liked: Location Staff were friendly and helpful

Disliked: Only one ladies toilet Facilities got very muddy - not the fault of the staff as they did clean in the morning and again in the evening. The field was very boggy in places. A very loud group ruined 2 of our 3 night stay however the campsite staff did deal this very well once we’d made them away.

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass over the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct; have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic. The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car. Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has lots of shops, supermarkets and services; travel there also for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, cracking views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs. And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.
