Lazonby Campsite: Large pitches

General

  • Peaceful campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a playground area and park

It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields and with the Pennine Fells as a beaut backdrop – and is part of the Lazonby Swimming Pool site for lazy dips. The river's there if you want to fish (get a permit at Lazonby post office or at the pool kiosk) and the northern lakes are 15 miles away.

Lazonby is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has two pubs, a well-stocked and open daily supermarket with post office and ATM, two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald.

Toilets and solar-powered showers are in the swimming pool buildings about two hundred metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool.

The pool is open daily when the campsite is and heated to 26ºC; lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/café selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

Beautiful location within the Eden Valley, Great sized pitches with convenient play park for the kids.

    Disliked:

Toilets & showers are now in need a upgrade, as they are dated toilets also didn't have soap 2 of the the 4 days we were onsite (Gents) Outdoor pool restricted to locals only with a monthly pass. As a controlled chlorinated environments with good ventilation (Outdoor pool) which all reduces the risk of transmission of covid in the pool environment I feel this offering should have been available to those who used the camping accommodation as the kids really missed this feature however still used the pools toilets and shower facilities? As long as COVID protocol was followed, it seems slightly unfair this facility was only offered to the chosen few. A timetable for campers would also be useful for when the facilities(Showering & Toilets) are restricted due to school sessions to enable all to plan their day around. As one toilet/shower for all is extremely limiting.

Everything nice quiet site catering for children with the play area and for dog walks. Next to a river but fenced adequately and able to swim in the river. Kids and pets can have so much fun here. Pool was closed on our visit due to covid restrictions which was a shame but no fault of anyone and certainly didn't spoil the holiday. Site was clean and facilities basic but clean and in good repair, plenty of hot water etc. Our 1st time holiday in a self built camper used electric hook up. Will certainly be going back

Directions

Lazonby campsite is situated off the B6413, 4 miles from the A6 at Plumpton and 7 miles from the M6- junction 41.

Travelling North from Penrith on the A6, turn right onto the B6413 signposted Lazonby. Follow the signs to the swimming pool, located on the far side of Lazonby. Follow the road through the centre of the village heading towards Kirkoswald. Pass the local school and playing fields on your right and then as you come to a sharp left-hand bend you will find the swimming pool and entrance to the campsite on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct: have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic.

The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car.

Withnail and I's destination Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has many shops, supermarkets and services; go here too for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, perfect views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs.

And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.
