Crake Trees Manor: The Campsite at Crake Trees

General

  • Working farm in a hilltop setting, welcoming guests for over 30 years
  • In the Westmorland Dales surrounded by walking and cycling routes
  • Covered campers' kitchen; breakfast baps and coffee available to order

Crake Trees Manor is a peaceful hilltop site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, 15 minutes' drive from the M6 and A66 and half an hour from Penrith, Cumbria.

In the Westmorland Dales just to the east of the Lake District National Park, Crake Trees Manor sits at the centre of a family farm, 800 feet high up with spectacular views over the farm to the Eden valley and the Pennines. The farm is in a wildlife haven and has stargazing by night under the clear dark skies of Cumbria.

The accommodation areas are on mown pathways in conservation grassland, with long grass and wildflowers all around. A short walk from the pitches gets you to the shower and toilet block (where individual wetrooms have underflooor heating), and the covered kitchen area (which has sinks, hot water, microwave and kettle, but no fridge). If you'd like a proper alfresco experience, try out the outdoor shower, where you can douse yourself with hot water out in the open air.

Guests can order farmer Mike's breakfast baps (Cumberland sausage and egg bap, plus a flask of fresh coffee) to be delivered in the morning (order by text using the number in your booking confirmation email).

Designated vehicle parking is in the farm courtyard, with wheelbarrows to transport your kit.

The site does not allow fires and all barbecues must be raised securely off the ground (no disposable barbecues please).

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No gas barbecues allowed.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Coronavirus update: The site takes all guests' health and safety seriously; please respect other guests and abide by social distancing regulations.

Shower and toilet facilities will be cleaned more frequently during the day. Hand sanitiser points will be at all entrance and exit points.

Kitchen area will be cleaned frequently.

Each spacious shower and toilet cubicle will have antibacterial soap, paper towels and toilet paper. Products and disposable cloths are provided for cleaning after use.

Beautiful site, with really spaced out, scenic and private pitches. Loved that you can walk round the site and pick a pitch yourself. Facilities are new, well designed, clean and accessible all day. Hot water and some kitchen facilities were such a bonus, along with barrows to move all your things. We loved the animals as well, especially the pigs!

What a beautiful site! Stayed in the serene wildflower meadow for 2 nights. The facilities were great, the kitchen came in real handy to make a nice brew and shelter from the rain. Toilets and showers were clean. Farmer Mike was a delight, he brought us breakfast barms each morning and we had a good natter about the farm's rewilding plans. Found the app really handy before arrival too. Will definitely be coming back!

The views from everywhere on the Camping fields at Crake Trees are to die for.
Just pitch up, get out the camping chairs, sit back and relax.
Plus at night, open the tent door when its dark and watch the galaxy of stars in the sky right above you.

Thank you taking time to leave a review.
Our site has acres of space and as there is not allocated pitches , campers have the choice of where to pitch in the 5 acres field. The camping fields have pathways mown through the wildflower and native grass meadows.
The views are tremendous from the hills of the north, almost Scotland round the eastern Pennines to the Howgill and Crosby Fells of the Westmorland Dales.
Our Farmer Mikes Breakfast Baps are really popular. Campers appreciate the easy start to their day...breakfast delivery of fresh cooked Cumberland sausage and egg baps delivered to the campsite kitchen each morning.

We had a great time, it was quiet had plenty of privacy in field, the facilities were great, we used the communal kitchen, my girlfriend used the indoor showers I used the outdoor shower which was next to the tents field. We took our dog which was nice as there is a a field next to campsite where I could take her to in the mornings. The owner came round in the morning to check on us after a very windy night. We are definitely coming back. If you want a quiet camping site with no cars in field I would recommend this campsite, carpark is right next to field and the futhere pitching spot is only 2mins walk with wheelbarrow which they provide to carry stuff.

The cleanliness of the pods and toilets , accessibility and location! We felt very save with all the Covid restrictions. This was our first get away after my partner returned from the Army and this was just what we needed. Nice and relaxing. 5*.

    Disliked:

Nothing really. My only dislike would be that not everything was open but this was no fault of Crake Trees, this was due to the Covid restrictions.

From the manager...

We do try our hardest. It is hard to achieve the comfortable mix of extensive Rules and Regulations and a Relaxing experience.

Set on a working farm in idyllic natural surroundings, the campsite is in a wildflower meadow with mown pathways allowing you to choose where to pitch. Car parking is right next to the field and wheelbarrows are provided so you can choose how far to walk from your car; the more isolated spots are further but worth the extra legwork in our opinion, and camping without cars in the field creates a much more relaxing atmosphere. The location is good for accessing both the Lake District and the Pennines/Yorks Dales, and the local village of Shap has good shops and pub. Next to the field are portaloos, shower and water point - all kept spotlessly clean and with lots of antibac spray to keep Covid at bay. A short walk up the field takes you to the kitchen/shower block which also has proper loos if you're squeamish about using a portaloo, and a lovely horse called Millie. Farmer Mike is super friendly and helpful, and is on hand every morning to dish out sausage baps if you don't feel like making your own breakfast :)

    Disliked:

    Disliked:

The field was saturated with mud, the portaloos were horrible and the shower was in a wooden shed which I couldn't stand up in. I was very dissapointed.

From the manager...

Im afraid I did not have the pleasure of meeting this delightful group of three sour faced ladies.
It would have been good to hear your comments first hand.

Directions

Use the postcode CA10 3JG for your satnav. When you leave the public road, follow the farm track up the hill and past the bungalow. Go over the cattle grid and turn right, then follow the track to the farm buildings and car park. Pitches are in the fields beyond the car park area.

Local attractions

By foot or bike, the farm is close to several horse-riding trails: it’s adjacent to the Coast to Coast and Land's End to John O'Groats bike routes and near the Westmorland Way and Lady Annes Way hiking paths. And that’s not all… Cumbria and the Westmorland Dales have several circular cycle trails passing through the local village too.

If jaunts in the car appeal instead, type Alston into the satnav and travel 50 minutes on a scenic drive voted one of England’s best, ending up in a famed market town so historical it’s appeared in both Oliver Twist and Jane Eyre...

To potter through a pretty urban centre a touch closer to the site, Kendal is 40 minutes away from Crake Trees Manor and has 12th-century ruins to roam round as well as a natural history museum.

Feel like pootling about another stately building? Lowther Castle and its gorgeous gardens are a 25-minute drive, while ambles around the banks of stunning Haweswater Reservoir are within reach in 30 if getting back to Lake District nature takes your fancy...
