The Campsite at Crake Trees

General

  • Working farm in a hilltop setting, welcoming guests for over 30 years
  • In the Westmorland Dales surrounded by walking and cycling routes
  • Stable kitchen with fridge, sink, microwave and kettle

Crake Trees Manor is a peaceful hilltop site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, 15 minutes' drive from the M6 and A66 and half an hour from Penrith, Cumbria.

In the Westmorland Dales just to the east of the Lake District National Park, Crake Trees Manor sits at the centre of a family farm, 800 feet high up with spectacular views over the farm to the Eden valley and the Pennines. The farm is in a wildlife haven and has stargazing by night under the clear dark skies of Cumbria.

The accommodation areas are on mown pathways in conservation grassland, with long grass and wildflowers all around. A short walk from the pitches gets you to the warm shower, mobile toilets and sink (all regularly cleaned). The warm community stable kitchen is also here, with outside communal barbecue and firepit. Guests can order farmer Mike's breakfast baps (Cumberland sausage and egg bap and a flask of fresh coffee) to be delivered in the morning (order by text using the number in your booking confirmation email).

Designated vehicle parking is in the farm courtyard, with wheelbarrows to transport your kit.

The site does not allow fires and all barbecues must be raised securely off the ground (no disposable barbecues please).

We had a great time, it was quiet had plenty of privacy in field, the facilities were great, we used the communal kitchen, my girlfriend used the indoor showers I used the outdoor shower which was next to the tents field. We took our dog which was nice as there is a a field next to campsite where I could take her to in the mornings. The owner came round in the morning to check on us after a very windy night. We are definitely coming back. If you want a quiet camping site with no cars in field I would recommend this campsite, carpark is right next to field and the futhere pitching spot is only 2mins walk with wheelbarrow which they provide to carry stuff.

The cleanliness of the pods and toilets , accessibility and location! We felt very save with all the Covid restrictions. This was our first get away after my partner returned from the Army and this was just what we needed. Nice and relaxing. 5*.

    Disliked:

Nothing really. My only dislike would be that not everything was open but this was no fault of Crake Trees, this was due to the Covid restrictions.

Set on a working farm in idyllic natural surroundings, the campsite is in a wildflower meadow with mown pathways allowing you to choose where to pitch. Car parking is right next to the field and wheelbarrows are provided so you can choose how far to walk from your car; the more isolated spots are further but worth the extra legwork in our opinion, and camping without cars in the field creates a much more relaxing atmosphere. The location is good for accessing both the Lake District and the Pennines/Yorks Dales, and the local village of Shap has good shops and pub. Next to the field are portaloos, shower and water point - all kept spotlessly clean and with lots of antibac spray to keep Covid at bay. A short walk up the field takes you to the kitchen/shower block which also has proper loos if you're squeamish about using a portaloo, and a lovely horse called Millie. Farmer Mike is super friendly and helpful, and is on hand every morning to dish out sausage baps if you don't feel like making your own breakfast :)

    Disliked:

The field was saturated with mud, the portaloos were horrible and the shower was in a wooden shed which I couldn't stand up in. I was very dissapointed.

From the manager...

Im afraid I did not have the pleasure of meeting this delightful group of three sour faced ladies.
It would have been good to hear your comments first hand.

Pod was nice. Clean and the facilities were good and clean.

Just a little out the way of the lakes, but still a very nice area.

From the manager...

Probably a big plus at Crake Trees is that we are not actually in the Lakes
We are part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Superbly accesable from M6 and A66 . Its just a 15 minute drive without queuing to exit at these motorway roundabouts.
Also 3 hrs from London if you travel by train to Penrith and hire an electric community car.
But regarding hills to climb why not tackle High Cup Nick, Scar Fell on the Pennines, the sleeping elephants of The Howgills or find Robin Hoods grave right up on the remote and empty Crosby Fell.
Maybe just climb up 1000 ft to the top of Windy Hill (5 minutes from your tent) lay down in the sweet native grasses and wildflowers. Say hello to a grazing heifer and take in the view that goes south, east and north for almost 100 miles.

Kitchen facilities were simple but functional.
Shower and toilet block was clean and warm.
The site was quiet and had plenty of space for us to pitch up.

Using the app was an excellent way to keep informed during these socially distant times.

    Disliked:

Portaloos were a bit grim but we just used the regular toilet block instead.

Would be good to have a covered space for congregation under in the rain.

From the manager...

So pleased you found our Crake Trees App useful.
It's been quite a challenge developing an idea I had at the end of Lockdown.
We have worked really hard on its development, indeed it's still a project that brings new challenges and ideas each week.
Over the winter I hope to develop it further to make more personalised walking, biking and driving trails.
I think it may be a "first" so I'm quite proud of the achievement.

The space and serenity - there was plenty of room at the site and of the tents were spaced out and had their own privacy. The site itself had gorgeous views. I also liked the fact that cars were kept off the site, as it added an extra feeling of being away of the world and being able to truly disconnect.
The facilities were kept meticulously clean and there was disinfectant and hand sanitizer available. We felt that Ruth and Mike were doing all that they could to ensure safety and cleanliness for all campers.
It was a great treat to have baps delivered for breakfast as well!
Thank you Ruth and Mike for a wonderful stay!

From the manager...

Oh dear that second half of August was a horror.
Rain, wind, rain, wind and bursts of sunshine.
But we survived.
I am ever astounded by the resilience and cheerfulness of our campers when the weather is somewhat inclement.

Fantastic site. We had the ability to choose where we wanted to camp on the field and was given the use of a wheelbarrow to take our gear down to our tent (no cars parked next to tents, which I prefer) The owners were friendly and I enjoyed our conversations. There was access to showers and toilets. The campsite was peaceful and I think there is a river somewhere on the right hand side of the field which was relaxing to listen to when going to sleep. A note for any tent campers heading here; BRING WELLIES! as this is a working farm and proper campsite and there are no roads going directly past your pitch (you do walk down a field). Overall we really enjoyed this site and we will be back again in the future. Hopefully for a longer stay next time!

Local attractions

By foot or bike, the farm is close to several horse-riding trails: it’s adjacent to the Coast to Coast and Land's End to John O'Groats bike routes and near the Westmorland Way and Lady Annes Way hiking paths. And that’s not all… Cumbria and the Westmorland Dales have several circular cycle trails passing through the local village too.

If jaunts in the car appeal instead, type Alston into the satnav and travel 50 minutes on a scenic drive voted one of England’s best, ending up in a famed market town so historical it’s appeared in both Oliver Twist and Jane Eyre...

To potter through a pretty urban centre a touch closer to the site, Kendal is 40 minutes away from Crake Trees Manor and has 12th-century ruins to roam round as well as a natural history museum.

Feel like pootling about another stately building? Lowther Castle and its gorgeous gardens are a 25-minute drive, while ambles around the banks of stunning Haweswater Reservoir are within reach in 30 if getting back to Lake District nature takes your fancy...
