General

  • Working farm in a hilltop setting, welcoming guests for over 30 years
  • In the Westmorland Dales surrounded by walking and cycling routes
  • Stable kitchen with fridge, sink, microwave and kettle

Crake Trees Manor is a peaceful hilltop site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, 15 minutes' drive from the M6 and A66 and half an hour from Penrith, Cumbria.

In the Westmorland Dales just to the east of the Lake District National Park, Crake Trees Manor sits at the centre of a family farm, 800 feet high up with spectacular views over the farm to the Eden valley and the Pennines. The farm is in a wildlife haven and has stargazing by night under the clear dark skies of Cumbria.

The accommodation areas are on mown pathways in conservation grassland, with long grass and wildflowers all around. A short walk from the pitches gets you to the warm shower, mobile toilets and sink (all regularly cleaned). The warm community stable kitchen is also here, with outside communal barbecue and firepit. Guests can order farmer Mike's breakfast baps (Cumberland sausage and egg bap and a flask of fresh coffee) to be delivered in the morning (order by text using the number in your booking confirmation email).

Designated vehicle parking is in the farm courtyard, with wheelbarrows to transport your kit.

The campsite was well maintained with clean facilities. All tents were comfortably spaced out so it felt like we had more space around us. it was a very comfortable stay (Minus the wind on the second night). The male owner was very attentive when high winds struck the campsite and was nice enough to make sure we were okay one morning after a night of praying our tent wasn’t going to fall down. Overall, a great stay and would return again.

    Disliked:

Checkin info could have been sent earlier than on the day of arrival, as bad signal in the area meant we didn’t receive any info upon arrival and With no one around, we were left to ask a pod camper About the arrangements. In the future, Pitch up camping facilities could Be upgraded from portaloos and an outside sink to something like the facilities closer to pod campers. It’s only a short walk to the nicer facilities, however, and they were always free despite only being few in number.

From the manager...

Thanks foe the review Amy.
During 2020 the situation for everyone demands patience and adaptability.
We have excellent facilities that are shared between Campers and Glampers. The extra Mobile toilets and outdoor hot water shower are new additions to help social distancing and lox risk.
The brand new App has just gone live. Its been a major undertaking. When through our teething troubles the App will give visitors a great new and easy way to access Directions, Settling in procedure, Site Rules, Where to eat, Where to shop, where to walk , Where to Bike Etc.
Is as I said before, bear with us and enjoy the very special and unique experience of camping in Wild Flower meadows at Crake Trees

Obviously Crake Trees Camping is not for you.
There are no child activities, non advertised
There are nit activities, campers make their own entertainment.
Maybe going for a walk to the village,
Paddling in the river, Exploring the footpaths in the dark, laying outside their tent looking at the sky, Listening for the call off a Curlew, or a Tawny Owl at dusk, See how many different wild flowers you can find in the meadow. The list goes on.....

Local attractions

By foot or bike, the farm is close to several horse-riding trails: it’s adjacent to the Coast to Coast and Land's End to John O'Groats bike routes and near the Westmorland Way and Lady Annes Way hiking paths. And that’s not all… Cumbria and the Westmorland Dales have several circular cycle trails passing through the local village too.

If jaunts in the car appeal instead, type Alston into the satnav and travel 50 minutes on a scenic drive voted one of England’s best, ending up in a famed market town so historical it’s appeared in both Oliver Twist and Jane Eyre...

To potter through a pretty urban centre a touch closer to the site, Kendal is 40 minutes away from Crake Trees Manor and has 12th-century ruins to roam round as well as a natural history museum.

Feel like pootling about another stately building? Lowther Castle and its gorgeous gardens are a 25-minute drive, while ambles around the banks of stunning Haweswater Reservoir are within reach in 30 if getting back to Lake District nature takes your fancy...
