  • Stay at a handmade shepherd's hut in the Lake District National Park
  • Set in Haverthwaite, a five-minute drive from Lake Windermere
  • Units each have an ensuite, equipped kitchen and underfloor heating
Huddled in a private woodland garden on the edge of Haverthwaite, Woodmans Shepherd's Huts make a stellar choice for a stay in the southern Lake District National Park. Stays at this Cumbrian site are in hand-built accommodation, insulated with sheep’s wool and furnished to a high standard; each unit has a comfy bed (with non-allergenic bedding, and non-feather pillows available on request), an ensuite bathroom with a power shower (plus toiletries and fluffy towels) and a well-equipped kitchen area with a combo microwave/oven, fridge and hob. The underfloor heating is a happy extra if the weather decides to turn British on you… And when temperatures are high enough? Settle in outdoors to gaze at the views of Holker valley and across to the 16th-century Bigland Hall through the gaps in the trees, or ask the folk on site to point you towards places to swim, fish or pootle about in boats. Once you’re feeling rested and ready to explore, walk the 15 minutes to Haverthwaite’s railway station and chug your way to Lakeside (via Newby Bridge) on a steam train, then continue the journey by water on one of Lake Windermere’s classic steamers. If you’d prefer to drive, the southern part of this famed body of water is five minutes from the site by car. Rather roam? Right outside the huts is a series of top-notch trails known as Haverthwaite Heights. Come back to the park after strolling around the stunning South Lakes scenery, perhaps once you’ve had a meal in the pub 15 minutes’ walk away. Alternatively, bring along food and fizz to use the barbecue cabin for flame-grilled meals (fuel, champagne flutes and toasting marshmallows provided free of charge… how handy…) .

Local attractions

You won’t be short of things to do during hols in the lovely Lake District. Amble to the ancient settlement of Cartmel (20 minutes’ drive), known for its 12th-century priory as well as a square clustered with shops and pubs, and make sure to try the village's famed sticky toffee pudding if you have a sweet tooth. After indulging, walk off the dessert on Grizedale Forest’s leafy cycling and hiking trails (20 minutes) or get active with a bit of stand-up paddleboarding and windsurfing at a watersports centre on Lake Windermere (25 minutes). An ace attraction to stop off at enroute is The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere (20 minutes), an interactive exhibition that details the tale of the author’s writing and her dedication to conserving the Lake District’s nature.
